My first clay man
My very first fragrance from the house of Lehmann. And I didn't even actively look for it, it just came to me I only learned about the old-established fragrance house Harry Lehmann here on Parfumo. Sometimes one's own horizon is very limited I can't count how many times I have toured Charlottenburg during my numerous visits to Berlin. Ok, I'll punish myself for the neglect later on when I have time for it.

But we are here on Parfumo and since there are lots of great, wonderful and generous members, some things just come naturally. And horizons broaden.
So recently, in a beautiful, lovingly packaged and with many nice little extras, a still well-filled flacon of Eau de Berlin came into my hands and in front of my nose.
And I have to say that I like this fragrance very much.
While wearing it, I feel transported to a beautiful classic barber shop, oh sorry, men's salon, where the boss personally serves his regular customers, or rather, takes care of them. The interior is dark, not the most modern, but very neat and chic, it smells of fine shaving foam, hair lotion and hairdressing cream. All in all a cosy atmosphere, there is still time for the customers, you exchange news from the neighbourhood, the boss is happy to serve the very loyal regular customers another drink.

Eau de Berlin starts for me slightly citrusy, a fine lemon mixed with the slightly tart bergamot, I suspect a little lavender, green notes appear, floral notes can be recognized, a little rose geranium has certainly been used, spice and then comes a soft mossy ground, which is rounded off with light wood notes.
Overall the fragrance is very clean and clear, it has no sharp edges and is quiet and unobtrusive. The shelf life is ok for a light fragrance, about 4 hours, on clothes a little longer. All in all it stays quite close to the body. So exactly the attributes for an Eau de Cologne.
The fragrance has an all-round pleasant and amiable effect on me and I like to wear it when I don't feel like wearing loud and complex fragrances and I prefer it to be simple, unagitated and pleasant. There are always moments when it is allowed to be quiet.
Eau de Berlin gives me the feeling of cleaning, shaving, subsequent care and hair styling in one wash. Not every fragrance can claim this either.
For my perception, I see eau de Berlin more in men's eau de vie, because the barber, erm Herrensalon note seems quite masculine to me. But that is only my personal feeling and who knows me, knows that I don't care about strict classifications anyway
Whether the fragrance really embodies the attitude towards life in Berlin, I am not able to judge. Certainly it can be transferred to any other city. To be honest, I don't really remember what Berlin actually smells like, the last side trip was too long ago.
And that tells me again that in the foreseeable future there should be another trip to Berlin in it. Among other things, combined with a visit to Lehmann. And I can imagine that it will not necessarily be the last Lehmann I like
I thank Ilovecoffee very much for the great fragrance package and the really successful surprise!
And I'm going to punish myself for years of ignorance

Colonia instead of Corona, No. 11: Oh you Berlin!
After all, this herbaceous and idiosyncratic fragrance is one of the few to be awarded the fame that a member of this honorable community has named himself after it, even though the esteemed co-parfumo "Ohdeberlin" apparently doesn't have it (anymore) in its collection. For me, on the other hand, eau de Berlin always flew a bit under the radar: Year and day ago, I tested it in Lehmann's shop, wrote a statement, rated it 8.0 and then somehow wrote it off until I decided to write it down for this commentary series.

Maybe it's because I felt a certain similarity to my beloved Cologne New York and didn't want to have two similar fragrances from the same manufacturer. Or that, despite all my local patriotism, I never had a real affinity for fragrance Berlinia (beyond my well-known fondness for Harry Lehmann): I don't like Mrs. Toni's concept, I couldn't develop a real relationship with Birkholz and Schwarzlose, and even between the intrinsically fascinating scents of "Meccan Rose" and myself, there's not much of a spark. And fragrances with Berlin in their name, like Lutens' "Fille de Berlin", I found mostly horrible.

So now, although the last six comments all say a lot about the fragrance in their own way and I don't claim to contribute anything fundamentally new, a few words (more) from me about Eau de Berlin:

The fragrance is - similar to New York - a full-bodied, rather complexly composed cologne, and in this respect it differs from the very simple cologne of Lehmanns such as "Reines Kölnisch Wasser", "Wasch Eau de Cologne" and in a certain way also "Laguna" (although this is already more refined).

He comes across as rather angular, creaky and - I also see it that way - a bit old-fashioned. I have no problems with that at all. But while I consider other supposedly "today's unbearable" fragrances such as Tabac Original or Tosca to be very much in tune with the world of FU students, Schering trainees and Tresor Clubbers, I can associate "Eau de Berlin" with a resident of any sector, an ally, to a West German or a Zoni, to a Laubenpieper, a Urania-goer, a KdW-Feinschmeckertage visitor, a HdK/UdK-artist and a visitor of the Neues Museum as well as one of the Neue Nationagalerie - but not to a person under 35 who does not know the word "framed".

Eau de Berlin is built on a citric base, where I suspect lemon/lime (not sour or hot, but strong) and orange (nice and tangy), maybe some bergamot, not neroli. Furthermore, and I don't mean in the sense of arbitrariness, because for me this is an absolutely harmonious fragrance, there is probably something of almost everything in it: something brown-spicy (that could be cloves), something green-herbal and maybe even a delicate floral touch. Last but not least, it has to be emphasized that I perceive a really rich, crunchy dose of a beautiful, herbaceous lavender here. Fruity notes, which I thought I could smell while writing this statement, I do not feel. The list of ingredients in the bottle I bought by mail order about three weeks ago still contains oakmoss, which matches the fragrance impression.

All in all for me a Cologne full of character and well composed. Rather masculine, a bit crisp and old-fashioned, 100% unsweet, rather dry, more suitable for splashing than spraying. Citrusy and freshly spicy, with scents that overlap with the (even more beautiful) New York and the (simpler, but very special) Laguna. The shelf life is clearly above average for a cologne.

Even if I wouldn't know what is so special about Eau de Berlin: If it is bought as a tourist gift because of its name, then the people who receive it (unlike cans of "Berlin air") are not "geneppten", but have a more than solid, a really good smell in the bathroom cabinet.

Third generation
My mother was friends with a West Berlin brat since she was 15 years old. This youth friendship lasted her whole life, through war, the wall and her fall. The two young girls became wives, mothers and grandmothers. I called mother's friend aunt. She was supposed to be my godmother, but this failed at the end of the 50's because of the travel regulations to West Germany.

In 1938 my mother visited her friend in Berlin for the first time. Father of the friend, a very fine gentleman, took the two teenagers on an extensive stroll through the city. They also went to Harry Lehmann in Potsdamerstr. Both girls were allowed to choose a fragrance and he gave my mother a bottle of Eau de Berlin so that she always had Berlin air with her. The bottle was carefully stored and cherished. Only rarely did she sniff it.

Around 1968 my aunt was allowed to visit us and what did she have as a present for my mother? That's right. Eau de Berlin.

Some years later, in the middle of the 70s, I got to know the divided Berlin on a school trip (ladies only). My aunt acted as a guide for us and when something typical from Berlin for home was on the agenda, my aunt advised us to smell the scents of Harry Lehmann. Would be better than such a kitsch. She took us to Kantstrasse and we probably made a good deal that day. With Berlin heart and snout my aunt managed everything to our satisfaction. The teachers also found it pedagogically very good. And we were all freshly baked adults.

To the horror of my schoolmates I blindly bought the Eau de Berlin twice. Once for my mother, of course. Yes, and now the fragrance. A unisex scent. Fresh, but not citric but elegant, lavender, but not granny plush, a little flowery after rose geranium and in addition green and also tart notes, but without being too masculine. So also wearable without further for ladies. Little by little the Berlin air thins out and yet you still smell fresh.

When my daughter got to know Berlin without borders a few years ago, Harry Lehmann and Eau de Berlin were also on the programme for her. But for me, please bring lily of the valley and patchouli fragrance, because they were running out

The discovery of simplicity
I was just thinking about what scents I wore during the day during these miserable dog days, and see: There were some who I almost accused of a certain simplicity. I didn't even comment on the "Eau de Berlin" for example, only a statement (meaning: nice but nothing) was worth it to me.

And now I'm wearing this cologne for the second day and wondering if I did him wrong.

By and large: No, I didn't. I didn't. The "Eau de Berlin" smells pleasant and somewhat unfashionable, it has a very simple mind and it is hopelessly unoriginal.

However, I had not considered one thing, namely how this kind of simplicity can do at temperatures well beyond 30 degrees. How different did I now want to smell during the day, if not for clear, linear, freshly cool scents, scents with a certain triviality that don't push themselves forward, that can fly below the collegial attention radar.

And suddenly it works, the Lehmannsche Berlinduft, which I still find rather boring and which for me doesn't fit to Berlin at all. I smell a friendly shower freshness, supplemented by very discreet spice, something powdery is also present and a tender florality, I could imagine that I have just a finely built lavender in the nose. After about an hour, the scent on my skin becomes much warmer with a tiny tuft of sweetness (benzoin perhaps), a little more flowery (rose geranium?) and delicate wood, while my T-shirt still rises straight freshness.

Typically Lehmann keeps the fragrance quite good despite Cologne concentration, after about four hours there is nothing on my skin, but in my shirt still a clear residue of spicy freshness smellable.

That's why I'm raising my rating from 6 to 7.5 - that's still no breathless enthusiasm, but I think: "Eau de Berlin" does his job pretty well in this weather.

Lehmann - Passion: 6 - The BVG Sneaker
The BVG stands for so much.
It stands for the Berlin attitude to life. Whether techno during the week, whether meeting at 10:30, working the early shift or Blag to the daycare. She'll take you anywhere, anytime Nothing illustrates the Berlin attitude to life as much as the BVG (and Spätis).
This seemed to prompt BVG to launch a sneaker in colloboration with Adidas. It will be released in the distinctive colours of the seat covers of the Berlin public transport company, which are supposed to hide dirt and graffiti on the seats as best as possible. It should look new and fresh for as long as possible. The thing hit like nothing in early 2018, at least in the shoe scene. But what may the Berlin attitude to life smell like?
Lehmann tries to take this up. And with this he has to take up an undreamt-of broad spectrum of the population, spanning from the students wearing Dior Sauvage to the auqatic, middle-aged Feierbiester and the Fougères of the classical generation.
On the website it is described as "modern, intense, sparkling, fresh".
"Eau de Berlin" starts with a peppery portion of foam that smells like a warm men's collectible shower. Fresh. Vivacious, it smells of warm water, of relentlessness. The warm water pulls the Davidoff Cool Water Genration with it.
I'm imagining I smell a little amber too This is an Eau de Colgne, which refers to both durability and fragrance. The shelf life and silage are far beyond expectations in terms of a cologne, after a while sour citric emerges, which comes from a merciless classic lemon. Biting chlorine blends in, sharply stirred. To the torn dry. Unsweet. Bitter, dusty moss until the nasal septum bursts. (The bursting of the nasal septum should also be known to some Berlin citizens)
Dusty and scratchy it smells also for me, whereby the well-being must come from cinnamon. However, this dustiness never drowns out the rather long lasting freshness. Modern, as mentioned on the website, it doesn't smell modern to me though.
I'd classify this perfume most likely in the direction of Fougère, even if here the freshness clearly wins over moss and is in the foreground.

In Berlin you are allowed to smell like that, although I would never think "clear, Berlin" when I smell it. But when do you do that. As with any clay man, I recommend a blind purchase. In my opinion, such a price/performance ratio with such a unique tradition behind it is unique. 100 ml cost only 5€, the bottle in addition again 2, and/or 3€.
