Innocent old fashioned rose
Penhaligons has created a rose perfume that smells exactly like a real rose, one of those white or pink ones growing wild on a thorny bush at the country house. It is heady and has great staying power, so a little goes a long way. When I was a teenager I had a diary with scented pages and it was this aroma. That may be why I think of this as a youthful perfume, but I see how it could be worn by romantics of any age.

Penhaligons launched this scent in 1984. I can totally see this working alongside the flowery lace Laura Ashley dresses that were so popular with romantics in the early eighties. I still really enjoy this scent, and although it will always feel nostalgic and innocent to me..it is extremely relaxing.

If I can ever afford pure silk sheets, they will also need to smell like this! It's a fat lazy pink rose growing in the full sunlight of a park. This stuff has great staying power. A little goes a long way and you could even pour some into your bath...heavenly. Ever the scent for a maiden, the geranium and chamomile notes follow the rose around like a chaperone and keep it from being naughty.

Elegant, thoroughly English rose. Class and naturalness
A really good Soliflor.
It's tough for a rose scent, but cultured. Reminiscent of the roses of David Austin.
To me, it pays homage to the dreams that adults like to indulge in, too. Elegant, sophisticated and undercooled. Mildness creates only the chamomile, which brings about the gentleness.

Of the base I do not perceive so much, but that does not hurt at all.
Both top and heart notes are very durable.
It has something very much its own, like Britain.
Minimally dusty.
But like nature, imperishable.
Not pleasing, yet elegant.

In the pavilion
After reading the news that Penhaligon's will give the official scent (Querqus) to the fashion week in London, I wanted to wear something from them. Since I am not big fan of Querqus, I rather chose ELISABETHAN ROSE.

There is a method of memorize things in the learning methodology, what is quite easy to me: connecting the learned thing to something else in your mind. Parfums were easily connected to places.

ELISABETHAN ROSE - if it would be a lesson to learn, I would say, it is a pavilion in a rose garden, where slow, warm winds blow.
Yes, rose means tea rose there. In the near past I had the pleasure to sample more tea roses, and this one was more refined than others. Nothing serious is happening in our rose garden. Mildly sweet, get lighter, get heavier, like the breeze, shows nothing forceful. Other rose fragrances are more sensual, ELISABETHAN ROSE is rather a comforting scent, and this is infrequent in circle of rose centered parfumes. It is a very friendly and nice fragrance.
Longevity is good on my skin.

Does what it says on the bottle
When I think of Penhaligon's I'm immediately reminded of gleefully reading the trashy novels of Jilly Cooper, following the antics of Perdita Macleod as she empties bottles of Quercus whilst swilling large amounts of Vodka and smoking endless cigarettes. The premise here was that her husband Jake bought her Quercus so that she would stop using his CK One ... I never quite got that because the former is WAY more pricy than the latter, even though they smell the same.

I have sampled Quercus and found it wanting ... not so with Elizabethan Rose. If an antiquated 'English' Rose is what you are after then look no further. This is gloriously old fashioned ... so much so that one could close one's eyes and immediately be transported to the set of 'Elizabeth', and quite imagine Cate Blanchett smelling like this in her portrayal of the Virgin Queen. It definitely does what it says on the bottle! While the sillage is not all that much to write home about, the longevity here is better than most Penhaligon offerings ... at least 3 hours on my perfume munching skin.

For my money, however, there is no need to shell out the ludicrous asking price for this. Get yourself a bottle of Perfumers Workshop Tea Rose ... it's just as good and way easier on the wallet.
