A third cousin
Almost everyone has it in their family: that one cousin that you don't really know exactly where it comes from - or at least you want to question its supposed origins.
Matthew is definitely a light fragrance. Clean, fresh and perhaps a little floral with a splash of citrus - that would probably be mandarin. Reminds me of classic fragrances that Dad used to put on after shaving in the early 2000s.
I'm not a big fan of Matthew, without saying that it's a bad fragrance per se. It just doesn't appeal to my taste - certainly also because I don't understand the fragrance notes and can't specifically match them to the descriptions in the fragrance pyramid. It just sits at the table with a large family, where it comes from tells you the relatives, but the story is not really convincing.

Simple, yet classy.
The Impudent Cousin Matthew has similar characteristics to Castile, another great fragrance from Penhaligon’s. To me, Cousin Matthew is a more refined version of Castile. If Castile were a signature scent worn day to day, Cousin Matthew would be its equivalent for formal situations. It’s less soapy and a little more citrusy than Castile, though not sharp or abrasive whatsoever. Both are linear, clean fragrances that are quite appealing and pleasant. For the price, one can do better in my opinion, especially if looking for a fragrance that’s unique and “stands out”. The current price for 75ml of Cousin Matthew is $310 USD, up $15 from several months ago, while the price for 100ml of Castile has jumped $5 USD to $170 USD. If you can find them for roughly 50% off, then they’re worth it. Otherwise, keep looking.

You can't choose your relatives
Cousin Matthew is quite a bird - but what a pleasant bird of paradise, if you please?! What a not-so-lame duck?!

Okay, basically this summery-creamy Penhaligons is also just an extended Neroli accord and for many, I'm sure, hardly worth the price, a bit too simple. But for me, this petitgrain parade beater came in extremely handy, showing that you can still conjure a lot out of the rather minimal and straightforward neroli/citrus direction. "Matthew" has hints of fluffy lemon cake, very mellow and pleasant. So the adjective assigned to him here is clearly to be taken with a fat wink. Because basically, he's kind of an everybodys darling. That, too, can be annoying. But it's zero fake or forced here, comes across as pervasively honest, authentic, high quality without limit. 4711 in noble tweed. Cool. Easily accessible. Always at the ready. Patch dispenses smooth hugs, mandarin tinges yellow-orange from the start. A little overpriced. Very much so. But that doesn't drag down the scent.

Flacon: beastly beautiful, elegant drake
Sillage: Neroli & cream in comfortable
Durability: 6-7 hours, rather less if you are strict

Conclusion: a neroli treat that is welcome at any family celebration - no matter how outrageous he should be!

The problem with Matthew, the time and the pressure pain
"I noticed right away it's a pressure pain when you press on it." (Lothar Matthew)
There are wisdoms in life that hardly lack a certain logic. With supposedly simple knitted scents, such as those from the Portraits series, this is often similar: you get what is written on it in such a way that you can clearly identify the individual components. "I always liked simple songs" I quoted John Lennon for "Radcliff" from the same series. At times this also applies to "Matthew", but as far as the logic and recognizability in the structure of the components is concerned and especially its endurance, he doesn't really want to convince me. He doesn't really touch me. "The problem with Matthew seems to be only a problem of time and place[...]" begins the official characterization at Penhaligon's. I would reduce the sentence to: "The problem with Matthew is the time."
The opening is furious. The two tones of mandarin and petitgrain have a wonderfully tingling effect, here the leaves, twigs and unripe fruits of the bitter orange seem more dominant, the mandarin gives the whole thing at best a little lemon pulp. This is British and noble and actually a bit youthful nonchalant. Within the first hour this initially strong citric impression turns into a vetiverhaft green. The leaves and twigs seem to take command. Far off off I think I'm hallucinating a light leathery touch, I blame it on a certain resemblance to "Agua Fresca Vetiver" in this phase. And then, after about one or two more hours, the boy runs out of breath with the duck head. Wasn't there something about Patch as a base? I'm afraid not at all. But even if it was only used as a fixative, it didn't do a good job in the long run.
That would be all well and good, but sorry, not for the price. This causes a pressure pain with regard to the spray head every time you press on it.

Lovely bright and soapy petitgrain that hints at neroli in the opening, but more metallic in the heart. Very simple, subtle and understated.
