06 + 06 = 12
As if 06 L'Eau Rare Matale was not intense enough, Pierre Guillaume decided it would be cool to inflate this tea-woods-bergamot concentration to huge proportions and see what happens. I was not too enthusiastic about 06, so I feared the worst. But aside from the sticky density, this actually wears more comfortably.

Hyperessence opens with a shot of minty bergamot. Its vibrance is boosted by a dose of vetiver. Where 06 keeps hanging in this vetiver-bergamot dualism, Hyperessence becomes more intense-woody after a cedar note joins in. It then remains in this citrus-woody state with a smoky black tea note and the bergamot slowly fading.

The density of the perfume is a thing, though. It sticks to skin like a leather sofa on a hot and humid day. I don't like that. On top of that, I realized that black tea has too much woody and smoky tendencies for my taste, contrary to the refreshing green species. Lesson learnt.

A challenging, yet noteworthy composition
When I first sprayed this in a sampling of 6 bergamot fragrances from Bloom Perfumery London's monthly subscription earlier this morning, I challenge myself to write a one word or short sentence first impression on each fragrance. On this one I wrote the word "delectable"... Well, on revision, it is not so delectable. It gives off a neroli like quality as it dries down on my skin, which I cannot stand. When I tried this morning my skin was unwashed. This second try is on clean ready-to-bed moisturised (unscented) skin. The opening remains lovely and inviting. This mid of what I smell to be neroli is upsetting, and I can't get over it. Tis a shame.

That is not to say that this isn't a well made fragrance, the ingredients are of good quality; it's freshness gives the fragrance a smell that would be a pale teal with a small shot of yellow hue. It smells of spring, a warm spring day. Of bees dancing in your way, of sunhat and sunscreened legs. Then the phantom neroli hits and your perfect spring day turns into hay fever and sun induced migraines.

I do like it.... I can't put my finger on why... or what about it I like. I can identify why I do not like it but i can't bring myself to reduce it's scent score because there is something special here. Will continue experimenting, and come back to this.

Breathe freely
Since the Circe had becirtst me from the same label, I also tried curiously Matale.

The floating character is similar, but the message of the fragrances is different.

While the Circe confronts me flirty, Matale promises me relief.
I have to think of my drop of Japanese healing oil, which I dribble on my pillow in the evening as a precaution so that I can breathe freely in my sleep.
The bergamot with the teen note reminds me of waking cold nights, when I prepare infusions with Soledum, and warm myself at the hot drink.
So my associations with the fragrance are not exactly positive, because who thinks of coughing, sniffles, hoarseness ?
?
If I put these feverish pictures aside, an interesting scent remains.
Even in healthy times, the mint note, interwoven with bergamot, is quite pleasant.
The tea aroma blows over it, and the leather sets an exclusive accent.
Cedar is smoky and slightly mystical.

Nevertheless, I cannot resist the impression of a medical tincture.
Maybe I have made too many Soledum infusions in my life?
Matale reminds me a lot of malade.

But after a spray, my nose is clear.

A fragrance for my perfume medicine chest.

scenario in a bottle
This perfume unleashes an entire scenario in my mind. Simultaneously it hits me with delicious smoky tea, a big bar of expensive soap, and cool, soothing metal. My mental image: 1) Working hard building something or moving heavy boxes all day in the 90+F (35+C) heat; 2)Met at the door by my beloved; 3) Meanwhile it starts to rain and cool off outside; 4) I take a shower with a big bar of unscented triple-milled French soap and get into a fluffy white terrycloth robe; and 5) he hands me a pewter freezer-chilled mug of lukewarm mate' tea. It's strong & luxurious but with some subtlety as well. Just beautiful. (113010)
