Duncan Hines Canned Vanilla Frosting
Queen Latifah is certainly not helping the nation's diabetes epidemic with the launch of QUEEN. After a briefly enticing opening featuring a variety of alleged notes, including tequila, none of which seems clearly identifiable to me--I mean, aside from vanilla and patchouli, of course--QUEEN draws the wearer into a vortex similar to the one which I imagine is produced by an industrial-sized mixer in which vanilla cream frosting is churning at the Duncan Hines factory. The promising opening is thus abruptly terminated as none of the potentially interesting notes unfurl or develop in any way, suffocated as they are in the thick vanilla-sugar-Crisco paste. The sole survivor from the opening, perhaps predictably, is patchouli.

It's probably not a coincidence that I recalled two movie scenes while wearing this perfume yesterday. First was the scene from Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958) where the Kim Novak character plummets to her death after climbing to the top of the stairs in the bell tower. Second was the scene from Luis Buñuel's Las Hurdes: Tierra Sin Pan (1933), where the goat hurtles down the craggy mountainside, also to its death.

The veritable wall of voluminous frosting lasts for quite some time, making QUEEN a dubious choice for public settings. On the other hand, it's also a dubious choice at home, devoid as it is of either complexity or depth. This fragrance might work as is for full-fledged vanilla fanatics, but it seems rather flat and blunt to me. Since the occasions on which I wish to smell literally like Duncan Hines vanilla cream frosting are few and far between, I might try to mix this perfume with a dry incense or perhaps a rose soliflore composition to cut the sweetness somewhat. When all is said and sniffed, I regard QUEEN more as a super-sweet oriental vanilla base than as a complete perfume.

High expectations that didn't deliver
I spent most of the day pondering over how I was going to approach this review. Oddly enough I find myself liking Queen and then feeling compelled to scrub it off. I think it's possibly the rather confusing composition that has me reacting this way.

Queen by Queen Latifah starts off wonderfully, with a rich, syrupy cognac and vanilla blend and the subtlest hint of citrus. The initial blast is very gourmand in nature and indeed very strong. It's got quite a bite to it, like an aggressive gourmand, borderline unisex.

However once this fragrance settles it begins to soften rapidly, fading very quickly into a rather nonchalant powdery vanilla, not unlike Britney Spears Fantasy's drydown.

I'm left feeling a little dismayed at having said goodbye prematurely to all that booziness and wild, uninhibited fun. Gone are the bold qualities, leaving behind a soft, vanilla oriental blend, seriously lacking in depth and complexity.

I know that Queen is rather popular, and I can see why, however I can't say that I find it particularly striking. Wearable yes, but nothing I would buy a full bottle of. I was actually quite shocked by how intimate the sillage becomes in the heart and drydown. I guess I expected something much richer and fuller than this.

The drydown was pleasant I must admit, with soft vanilla, tonka bean, inoffensive patchouli and exotic incense. It smelt glorious on my skin despite the poor longevity.

Queen hasn't been released in Australia as of yet, and I often wonder why. I bought a sample out of curiosity, but now, as much as I hate to say it, I wish I saved my money.

Warm and Boozy Gourmand--Good Quality for the Price Point
I blindly ordered both Queen and Queen of Hearts together. I tried Queen the first day and did not particularly like the top notes. The bergamot and mandarin orange really assaulted my nose and gave me a slight headache. I really thought I would not be able to wear this fragrance again. The second day I wore Queen of Hearts, and I was very taken with it's incense and white florals. The third day I gave Queen a second try, and I am so glad I did because the top notes did not bother me at all the second time. I discovered that Queen is a very nice fragrance...a sweet and sexy fragrance. Queen is bold, BOOZY, warm, and very inviting, and it is not super synthetic as are so many other "celebrity" fragrances such as Jessica Simpson Fancy or even high end fragrances such as La Vie Est Belle, both of which are very synthetic to my nose.

As other reviewers have said, Queen has a pretty strong cognac note, but it is very well complimented by the jasmine, vanilla, and sandalwood notes. The heart notes and base notes are quite nice. I could pick out the jasmine and the cognac in the heart notes. I cannot detect any patchouli, incense or rose alone in this fragrance, but I think this means that Queen is very well blended. The deep dry down is sweet, warm, and comforting, and, well, yummy smelling. Longevity is much better than expected given four good sprays.

Now, for all of Queen's wonderful aspects, I would not say it is an outstanding fragrance that is destined to become a great classic. However, it does what it promises to do, and it does it quite well for a very fair price, thank you. Is it worth adding it to your collection? Absolutely!!

Overall, I really like Queen, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who likes a sweet, gourmand, Oriental-ish type of scent. I think Queen is particularly nice for the Autumn and Winter seasons. It has a "festive" and "happy" quality to it that reminds me of the winter holiday season. Also, I think it would be a very romantic fragrance to wear whilst curled up with one's lover in front of the fireplace on a cold, crisp evening. Queen can still be worn quite easily during Spring and Summer, too, if one will be indoors most of the time. Heaven bless climate controlled environments!

Now, as regards longevity, Queen, like Queen of Hearts, becomes a skin scent on me after 3.5 to 4 hours and has to be reapplied, but I am not bothered by this fact given the price point. If I apply two sprays to each arm and two sprays between the girls, I get excellent longevity. Applied at night after I bathe, I can still smell it on myself in the morning whence I awaken.

I ordered back up bottles of both Queen Latifah fragrances, and that really surprised me as I never expected to like either one very much, much less to like them enough to order back up bottles! Steve Demercado has done a brilliant job with both of these parfums. If you find them at TJMaxx, Marshall's, or on-line at scentedmonkey.com, etc., grab them! You will not regret it, especially once the cold weather sets in.

The more I wear Queen the more I love it! It is so boozy, so gourmand, so warm, so sweet, and so delicious! I am so glad I bought both Queen and Queen of Hearts. : )

Queen
I received a decant of this from a very kind member here, thank-you! This fragrance really exceeded my expectations! From first spray, I loved it! It doesn't really seem like a celebrity fragrance to me. It is much better than the average celebrity fragrance. Something about this perfume seems familiar to me. When I applied it I felt like I was having a deja vu! Wearing it is just like wearing your favorite warm, cozy sweater. It just feels good! I love scents with a vanilla note in them and this is no exception. The vanilla here is delicious. Not too sweet, not suffocating or cloying and entirely pleasurable to have on. This fragrance certainly earns its place along side my other bottles. A mature scent that's suitable for all ages and all occasions.

Only the bottle is unique
Granted, I had high expectations for the Queen. I was expecting something classy, fairly unique, and good quality. High expectations often lead to a major disappointment. That's what we have with my test of Queen.

Queen goes on like any other sweet, sugary celeb scent: Halle, Beyonce, Britney, Mariah - Pick one. Then, the jasmine ramps up the volume and Queen becomes sickening sweet, disgustingly so. The drydown is typical of oriental vanillas in the mass market, just add some dark rum.

I so wanted the Queen's perfume to be different than all the rest. It's not. At least the bottle is prettier & classier.

One of the more refined celebuscents released in the last 20 years. Sweet patchouli that has had one drink too many.
