from jilted mistress to queen
How happy she was, young Bernardine Eugénie Désirée Clary, when the "citizen-general" Napoleone Bounaparte asked her to marry him.
She, the silk merchant's daughter from Marseilles and the aspiring, if somewhat poor, young man!
She well remembered when she tried to free her eldest brother Etienne from prison: it was then that she first met his brother Joseph Bonaparte, and thus, in fact, the whole family. For without mother Letizia and all the siblings, Napoleone was unimaginable.
So then Joseph Bounaparte also made the acquaintance of Désirée's sister Julie and married her in August 1794. Joseph was later to become King of Naples and eventually King of Spain.
That Julie's large dowry played a decisive role in this choice is obvious: the Bonaparte family was poor but had many children.
A silk merchant in Marseille, on the other hand, lived quite comfortably and the dowry for the daughters was quite respectable.
From 1795 to 1796, Désirée and the young, still insignificant General Napoleone Bounaparte were engaged. Nobody suspected that the latter would later become Emperor of the French.
Only when Napoleon, who had meanwhile changed his Italian name into a French one, met the influential widow Joséphine and also married her immediately in 1796, this connection broke up.
Many hot tears flowed, because Désirée was already staying at the court in Paris at that time and had to experience everything firsthand.
By chance, however, Désirée met the young Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who was a friend of Joseph and Lucien Bonaparte, on that very day.
In August 1798, they married us General Bernadotte, with the two brothers being Napoleon's witnesses at the wedding and later becoming godparents to their first child. - All remained fine in the family, in fact!
Son Oscar was born; Jean-Baptiste meanwhile had made it to Marshal of France and Prince of Monte Corvo, when one day the great twist called Providence met him and intervened in this life.
For in 1810 Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was adopted by the childless Swedish royal couple under the name of Charles Joseph.
After his accession in 1818, the Marseilles silk merchant's daughter and jilted Napoleon fiancée Désirée Clary thus became the Queen of Sweden and Norway named Desideria.
So she is the ancestor of the royal families of Sweden and Norway.
What a long life journey with far-reaching consequences that began in sunny Marseilles.

The house of "Rancé 1795" became a firm supplier of fragrances to the Parisian court as early as Napoleon's time, and so most of his creations were dedicated to the women of that family.
I was allowed to test "Joséphine" and the enchanting "Pauline".
Paolina Borghese was the French emperor's favorite sister, and Canova's famous marble sculpture depicting her as "Venus Vixtris" - also known as "Venus Victoress" or "Venus at Rest" - still reveals the scandal it caused at the time.
What a woman's body - what a goddess!

But now finally to the fragrance "Désirée"; a young family member of this long-established family.
"Désirée" is a cheerful floral-fresh fragrance creation to bring the Mediterranean way of life to the darker north: it succeeds excellently.
Because alone everything that is brought up for the prelude, carries the name "sunny freshness".
Of course, bergamot may not be missing, accompanied by the ripe juicy grapefruit and some lemon zest. Fine, fruity and classic.
In addition, some Zweiglein mint, a handful of spicy juniper berries and a slice of ginger:
Well, does not that sound nice?
Incidentally, ginger is responsible for the slight bizzle in the nose and thus brings right here momentum in this fragrance being.
Grasse or May rose forms together with a rich noble rose variety the transition to the fragrance heart.
Here waits not only the radiant white, large-flowered jasmine with the friendly golden faces, also the distinguished gardenia has arrived: after all, one honors a queen here!
For a spicy surprise provide thyme and angelica; rare in a heart note, but here very pleasant and invigorating the scent.
Myrtle, even if here not "tied in the maiden wreath", forms a tasteful bridge to the final chord.
Of course, with a nevertheless spicier floral creature cedar wood may not be missing; it is always such a fragrant silky-woody addition.
If we had Pauline Borghese as Venus earlier, may not be missing here at the end of the great fragrance gift of this goddess for "Désirée".
A cuddly soft generous coat of white musk, studded with golden amber facets and framed with the tendrils of delicate lemon blossom:
A fragrance robe, created especially for Queen Desideria of Sweden and Norway, which yet does not underplay the origin of Désirée Clary from the sunny Mediterranean coast; but rather highlights its luminous warmth and natural vitality.

"Désirée" by Rancé does not have exceptional longevity, even the sillage is that of a rather average eau de parfum
And yet it is an enchanting and very endearing fragrance composition, which here successfully intertwines the past with the present.
Not just a few fruits, flowers and a base: no! "Désirée" is alive, makes alive, brings and celebrates every sunny day, which we need so much in our so frequent everyday gray!
Finely and lovingly composed this fragrance lady, which does not have to flirt with her age:
"Désirée" is timeless, warm and lively and deserves a place among the many fresh young stars, whose light is known to go out again quite quickly!

Thus, "Désirée" is a queen who likes to mingle with "the people" in an unexcited way, and yet spends a few hours there cheerfully and especially endearing.
Perhaps a little cheer is in order here ...
