One, No One and One Hundred Thousand
Sometimes our instinct, or snobbism it would be better to say, causes us to make wrong choices. It has happened to me before, and I'm sure it will happen again, it's inevitable. This time I'm talking about my reluctance towards the Roccobarocco Uno perfume, which has always attracted me for its spectacular column-shaped bottle, with shades ranging from the intense orange of the base, to the transparent of the capitol and then ending with a black cap. However, something has always made me think of an old aunt-style perfume, without having ever smelled it, just a bias. A few months ago, I wanted to test the tester on a strip of paper, and it disgusted me. The smell it exhaled was stale, rotten, opulent, and horrifying. I convinced myself that this was the essence, and so I gave it up. The fact is, a few days ago, I bought Roccobarocco For Me, and next to it there was still an Uno bottle. I wanted to give it another chance, and this time I felt something that enchanted me. Let's see if with my description I can thrill you too.

Roccobarocco Uno greets the skin with a sun-kissed fresh blast of citrus fruits that's bright, light and juicy. The accord is fleeting, for a bite I can perceive the mandarin and lemon emerging from a sea of dark green, balsamic and tuberous notes. A light veil of peach makes the opening slightly fruity, and fortunately, the peach is not dominating, nor cloying. The initial stage is all too citrus, fruity, with a touch of green notes from dewy leaves.

I quickly get the most earthy and musky base notes that blend well with the assorted flower bouquet. Rooted, natural, juicy, waxy as spring flowers are. Rather quickly, the perfume warms to a delightful sunny white floral and a calming freshly cut leaves. In the heart, I strongly perceive the lily of the valley, the tuberose, and the jasmine. This white and erotic bouquet mixes nicely with yellow narcissus and ylang-ylang flowers, and the mystical orchid, whose sweet, honeyed and oriental scents mute. I detect old-fashioned tuberose in the middle of a massive flower's bouquet. Almost spicy, so green and sweet, with crisp hints of lemon: that's the lily of the valley. The hyacinth brings a watery note to the composition, while the carnation gives that spicy profile that evokes the clove. I guess there are even violet leaves in there that on my skin reveals itself with typical hints of oil, diesel, or gasoline, not at all unpleasant given their transience. The middle stage is mainly floral, just not all too sweet, with warm notes that evoke the most intense perfumes of Eastern countries.

After about an hour, it dries down into something nice, with excellent balance. It's light creamy sandalwood, with a hint of powder and sweetness. The indolic aroma of jasmine persists but becomes one of many notes working in harmony. The mossy and musky tones now scream, with a balmy veil of benzoin and vanilla, here used to balance the animal and earthy accord. What a treasure! A final stage full of woody and balsamic accords.

The perfume is so cold and hot, so bright and so happy that it's an immediate mood lifter. It doesn't morph all that much, but it does warm, and it radiates this incredible citrus green accord rounded off by a softened blossoms mix that bounces off of the skin. Roccobarocco Uno becomes a muted and slightly soapy version of the opening. It adapts to the atmosphere of a sunny day in spring, late summer and almost autumn. It has some tropical and summer aroma built-in. Light and inoffensive enough for daily wear, for the office, and an evening out. The fragrance pushes one's thoughts forward and with optimism. I sprayed Uno with a heavy hand on this damp day and went for a long walk. Intoxicating. Roccobarocco Uno is the testimony that not all good perfumes should make us empty our wallets. It is an Eau de parfum that leaves an intense trail.

This review bases on a 100ml (3.4 Fl. oz) I own since September 2020.

It's a Kind of Magic
The candidate stands perplexed and tense in front of the three smooth, narrow surfaces that extend away from her like small corridors towards lush red curtains. Curtains that still hide what is only revealed when the player chooses one of them to pull up.
Restlessly, she totters alternately at the ends of the surfaces at her feet, as if they could tell her the best grip fortunately. Behind every curtain there is supposedly a profit hidden, only the value distinguishes them from each other.
The candidate hears the signal. A sound impulse is played at a faster rate, signalling that the time for consideration has expired. At the end of it a gong blast. The moment of truth has come. The nervous lady bites her lips and chooses curtain number three.
It goes up as if by magic and leads the eye to a small box. The showmaster fetches and opens it and an envelope appears. Inside is a voucher for a visit to the nail studio.
The joy of the candidate is limited. But there is more to the box. A small lottery ticket that offers the prospect of one of the remaining goals if the player knocks out the first win. This comes to her as if she was on call and she accepts the ticket.
Again the guessing starts, this time about the best choice of the other two curtains. The tension wears down the nerves even more and beads of sweat increasingly form on the lady's forehead. Again the sound impulse starts and then the final gong. She chooses curtain two while jumping up and down like an excited teenager. The curtain rises and a huge bouquet of flowers bathes the already colourful scenery in even more radiant colours. But there is still no glow in the candidate's face. Where are the really good prizes hidden, with which the show constantly advertises? What a luck that there is a little card in the bouquet of flowers, which refers to the last curtain, if you also give up this second prize.
It can only get better, the candidate thinks. Her hands are shaking and she tries hard to keep her excitement at bay as much as possible. The Showmaster takes her by the hand and they go together to Curtain One. As if on command, everyone in the studio counts down from five and with a jerk the last curtain goes up.
A black and orange striped box lies bedded on black velvet. While the showmaster can't do anything with it yet, the contestant obviously knows very well what is hidden in it and is suddenly completely beside herself. Screaming she jumps up and down and throws her arms away. Who thinks she has won a car or at least a great trip is wrong In the luminous box rests a fragrance.

Roccobarocco "Uno" is, according to its birth year 1986, an intense, floral and at the same time classically inspired women's fragrance, whose flacon is inspired by the shape of a column. Like most perfumes of this era, opulence is (over)emphasized. A multitude of ingredients of strong character are used, which at first sight seem to overwhelm each other, creating a sensory cocktail that takes you straight to nirvana. Knock out instead of knocking down. Slamming instead of knocking over. Flattening instead of mowing down. But if you give "Uno" a chance, you will soon realize that this perfume creature from another time still fits into the here and now. It easily joins the ranks of classics like Ysatis, Vanderbilt, Volupté and other street hits from the eighties and nineties, which still have their fans today. It is classic and elegant at the same time, as well as of a cultivated flippancy. The quality of "Uno" is equal to the others, the appearance is just as loud and colourful and the dose makes the difference whether such a luxuriant fragrance remains a masterpiece of flowers, fruits and woods or mutates into a sillage monster that gives escape reflexes to everything in the immediate vicinity.
The clearest thing I notice at "Uno" is a beautiful rich peach, slightly dipped in tangerine and then bedded on white and yellow flowers. Strong and yet beautiful, dominating but not dominating. I think I can smell the hyacinth before Jasmine-Sambac wraps the opening notes all in a thick orange syrup, which softens the light effervescence into a honey-warm tone. Uno" remains powerful from beginning to end, for this it has too many independent and strong notes in the base, which add to it. The bottle's orange hue, which has been added as the fragrance progresses, is in my opinion aptly chosen, as the fragrance embodies these colours with the individual aromas. When his heart starts beating a bit slower and his head has calmed down a bit, "Uno" will still be powerful in the base, but the peach from the beginning catches up here and forms a slightly soapy finish, especially with patchouli and oakmoss, if you can call it that. Because "Uno" will never really fade out completely
The contestant from the show, in any case, drew her own personal first prize that evening and climbed overjoyed into her old, little Fiat in front of the studio.
She briefly shook her hair a little and drew the red lipstick and the black eyelid line, then she rummaged around in the glove compartment between the discarded things until she finally felt with her fingers what she was looking for. Radiantly she pushes the music cassette into the slot above the car radio and turns it up.
Right on time for "It's a Kind of Magic" by Queen she starts the engine.
The old, small Fiat becomes a time machine and sets off on a journey with "Uno" and its driver.
The journey home becomes a little time travel.
"It's a Kind of Magic" just...

Eighties never die
Are you nostalgic because you don't find anymore the rich, opulent and a little ladylike perfumes typical of the 80es? well, with this classic and historical medium-low cost scent you can find again those years and that athmosphere. First of all,a look at the bottle, similar to an ancient column and quite "spectacular"with its multifaceted glass and its warm amber nuances.
Now let's spray the scent : at the opening the first note you can smell are the citruses and the peach, bright and fizzy. But immediately you can feel the warm, feminin and quite bitter flowery heart involving in an intoxicating cloud . A very strong an ladylike accord, the same you could find in the vintage perfumes of those years.
The base is deep and musky with a patchouli touch , while I didn't smell at least on myself the vanilla note I find mentioned here in the pyramid. Anyway, a wonderful olfactife symphony and an extraordinary sillage. I bought it on sale at about 20 € for 100ml and nowadays this scent it's a must in my perfumes wardrobe.
It is perfect in the colder season maybe sprayed on the clothes and the scarfs too for a more longlasting effect, but it's pleasant also in the mid season or in a summer night, because it's strong but not excessively heavy. Ladies, with this scent Eighties never die!
