Flower duet
Pierre Loti (actually Julien Viaud) was a French naval officer and writer. His novel Rarahu, later renamed Le Mariage de Loti (1880), founded a literary exoticism and impressionism of the South Seas, especially about Tahiti. The bestseller is still considered a classic of French exoticism and served as the basis for the libretti of the operas Lakmé by Léo Delibes and L'île du rêve by Reynaldo Hahn.

Opera "Lakmé" takes the audience to an Indian town during the colonial period. The plot is set in the 19th century, when India was a British colony. Lakmé lives as a Hindu priestess in a temple, hidden behind trees and dense foliage. It is in this sacred grove that the British officer Gérald and Lakmé meet and fall in love by chance. But the Hindu religion forbids such a love relationship. Lakme's father Nilakantha watches over this. Since Gérald has desecrated the sacred grove, Nilakantha wants to take revenge. He hurts Gerald with a knife Lakme finds him and heals him in a secret place They want to stay together forever, but Gérald hesitates to take the vow because he does not want to part with his army for good. Lakmé sees the impossibility of their relationship and takes his own life through the poisonous datura. From the beginning it was an unequal relationship that had to end tragically.

On 28.03.2019 the Muscat Opera House in Oman presented Léo Delibe's opera "Lakmé" in its first own production. Roger Dove was commissioned as the production's perfumer. His assignment: to create a perfume for the opera Lakmé, which would then be sprayed in the auditorium at certain points during the performance. However, he was not engaged by the opera director, but by a member of the sultan's family.

Just one thing in advance: I won't take part in the discussions whether Roger Dove is only the creative director or/and actually the perfumer of the company. Not for two reasons: the first reason is obvious, only Roger Dove himself knows who composed the masterpieces of ROJA Parfums. The second reason is rather mundane: what I can't prove or disprove, I don't deal with. I am grateful that this fragrance exists, and that's what counts for me!

The fragrance Lakmé stands for the opulence and fertility of nature, without any obtrusiveness. I was so infinitely happy that the aldehydes are almost imperceptible in the composition. The fragrance is as delicate and yet as shocking as the voices in the "Duo des fleurs / Sous le dôme épais" from the performance. For all those who reject ROJA perfumes in advance because of various prejudices, I recommend you to spray Lakmé on yourself, close your eyes and listen to what the voices of soprano and mezzo-soprano, together with the fragrance, are able to move in you. That is all that matters.

Life is not calculated and calculated, it is lived with all senses. Cheap, cheap, expensive, underground vs. luxury...all that doesn't matter anymore at this moment.

From the first moment on, the fragrance lays itself on the skin like a mist. I do not share the opinion that the perfume is body-hugging. Nor loud. If there is a perfect sillage, it is Lakmé. Every move you make is enriched with the siren voices of the perfume I see Catherine Deneuve seducing Susan Sarandon in The Hunger. Yes, I admit it, I am hopelessly addicted to Lakmé

I rarely share the short ratings regarding fragrances. Here too I must correct, as the fragrance is by no means only flowery-powdery. Lakmé is complex powdery-woody from the start. Sandalwood plays a big role in this wonderful creation. It is the flame that longs to be recognized. This fragrance carries within it the certainty of the beautiful Lakmé that Gérald will not return her love, that he will not stay with her.

It should not be forgotten that Roger Dove has a very special relationship with the lilies of the valley: ROJA and the lily of the valley. In Lakmé, the perfumer combines the fairy-like bell-like voices of lily of the valley with mildly earthy yet delicately floral iris root. Everything becomes cooler, infused with elegance and gentleness and infatuated with mysticism. Wonderful! I see Lakmé as one of the most beautiful creations from the British (now) traditional house. This fragrance will never leave my collection.

I have now finished listening to Lakmé and have connected every second with the development of the fragrance. So many fragrances from ROJA Pafums reside high on "The best of - Scala". Why not Lakmé?
