Ocean Pine Minimalism
Parole d'Eau (Word of Water) takes me to the bristly, cool pitch pine covered dunes of Plum Island. When the sun hits the trees and the sand, the camphor and brine permeates the air, rendered just a shade sweeter by resins and beach grasses. I appreciate how direct the pine accord is here; with intermittent moments that remind me of the turpentine of the studio when I spent hours painting in college. The conifers are supported by citruses, of which their terpenes are adjacent and therefore capable of lending some resplendence.
There are droplets of condensation, mist in the air, sand dollars on the shore, piping plovers scuttling, and summer moves to autumn. There is nothing dramatic, it is a suspended chord, a soothing straight line, as if traversing the beach. A break in its linearity comes from softly woody, floral musks as the terpenes and the camphor eases. It sets a pellucid scene, a vista in fragrant form, stretched out and washing over. This is far from a typical Serge Lutens, but no less beautiful and compelling in its profound minimalism. Parole d'Eau would make a great palate cleanser for all that is complicated.
