Completely hookah'd

Fierce, sweet & savoury oriental enrobed in veils of smoke. If you are looking for the pervasive perfume of a Nargile lounge you have found it.

An almalgum of old-fashioned, rose-scented powder compacts, club smoke machines, pot pourri, old church pews & dust assaults my senses on first blast. My initial view of this scent is far from favourable - but wait, the magic is yet to begin!

Within minutes a curl of smoke snakes from my skin - I can almost feel the dry heat from the burning coals. It is intense, realistic & I love it.

Can you powder puff charcoal smoke? I believe Christopher Sheldrake has succeeded! FT settles into a more tame, smokey, balsamic scent of sweet tobacco, hay, candlewax with a touch of refined (not animalic) leather & warm skin. The sillage is inoffensive but the lasting power is good.

If you don't do somersaults for intense smokey scents - steer clear. I adore the scent of bonfire on my skin, love the smell of smouldering charcoal before the BBQ begins & the sweet, fragrant smoke from a Hookah pipe. This fragrance has my nose a-twitch.

In summation: truly a "'fume", an ode to the Nargile. A dense, dry, smokey scent with a touch of brown sugar sweetness & spice. Magic, daggers, smoke & mirrors - hooked.

sweet smoke

Fumerie Turque opens with smoke, smoke, and more smoke. The smoke is very dry and thick, almost tangible. I hate cigarettes and cigarette smoke, but this is a lovely smelling smoke. I compare it with the smoke from incense sticks: thick, dry, tangible, almost stifling and choking, but deliciously sweet and fragrant, and I can't get enough of it. Sometimes after I burn incense and I come back into the room, the air still feels dry and smokey: that's what I get in the top of FT. I can also detect a bit of hay.
The dry smokey smell lingers, and gradually the sweet notes come forward. There is also something earthy, which is probably the patchouli . This is the good kind of patchouli, maybe a bit similar to the patch in Coromandel, but less fresh and bitter, much softer. Still the smoke remains the most prominent note to me.
As I get to the drydown, the scent is still dry and a little smokey, but it is no longer stifling, it has settled to something rather dusty or powdery and with a sweet fragrance, which reminds me a bit of sugar almonds (maybe the tonka bean?), and chamomile tea with honey. In many perfumes honey is animalic and sometimes reminds people of a urine note, but in FT the honey is soft, gentle, sweet, a mere teaspoonful in chamomile tea, nothing dirty or sour. I can also detect a bit of a dusty rose, just enough for me (I'm not a big fan of big roses in perfume). I can't smell the leather note though.
The general "feel" of the drydown is the same I get in Keiko Mecheri's Loukhoum: the powdery dry smokey sweetness that is so addictive. I'm not saying FT is similar to Loukhoum, Loukhoum is 100 times sweeter than FT, it's just that feeling I get.
Fumerie Turque is a big LOVE for me.

Sweet Tobacco And Leather...

Fumerie Turque opens with an almost black currant-like semi-sweet tobacco accord mixed with accents of dirty patchouli and spice. It actually is quite nice, and shows promise for what is to come. The scent adds what I can only describe as a black licorice note just after the opening that may be anise (even though it is not listed in the official notes). Fumerie Turque then turns quite smokey while retaining the tobacco, and then adds a hint of leather into the mix for good measure. Finally the tobacco and leather scent sweetens just a bit further with hints of tonka bean to finish things off. Sillage and longevity are both above average.

My final impressions are that I like Fumerie Tuque but don't love it. This is more a preferences issue rather than a fault in the scent's fine composition by Sheldrake. Fans of the category should certainly have Fumerie Turque on their short list when seeking a tobacco and leather combo scent. 3.5 stars out of 5.

Not what I expected..

It was not at all the tobacco scent that I had imagined it to be. Some people had compared it to Odori Tabacco, but this is much more dry. And less sweet. It does last an incredibly long time. I believe it lasted over 20 hours on my skin. I have tried the current formulation bell jar on one hand and the rectangular bottle on the other hand, I found that the perfume from the rectangular bottle projected longer and a little better than the perfume from the bell jar. They were also slightly different, although I'd attribute that to a batch difference, rather than reformulation.

Smokey bar, leather and cigarettes

Fumerie Turque is the reference tobacco scent. While Chergui is the popular pick, FT is what niche snobs wear. Women and children, stay away! Smokey bar, leather sofas, cigarette ash and sweet animalic honey. Fortunately, it doesn’t come off as sweet as Chergui. Tobacco here is both sweet and sour. FT isn’t for everyone but if you take your tobacco frag game seriously, this is the one to try or even to have in the collection. It is totally unique and no other scent comes close. Whether you love it or not, you won’t stop sniffing your wrist.
