The Guardian of Flowers
He only wanted to do this job for two weeks, that's all it took. The old diplomatic widow was supposedly out of town. He had already taken care of many things, but never of a villa and especially of a garden. What was so special about a garden? His agency had explicitly told him not to touch any of the flowers that grew there. They should be rare and precious! The deceased man had been a cultural attaché and had brought along many and very rare flowers and their offshoots from his long travels. It's just flowers and a garden, he thought! And walked through the huge villa until he stood at the end of the spacious salon in front of the wing doors of the garden. It was a very warm night and a full moon at that. Probably he didn't even need the flashlight to walk the garden every hour. So bright shone the moon. He turned the old keys of the hinged doors over and pulled both doors open at the same time with some force. He didn't know what to expect!

He had seen many gardens, but never before in his life had he seen anything so beautiful. The white gravel paths seemed to lead to infinity. But they always met at the end of a big white pavilion, that he could already see. Slowly he walked down the marble stairs and went off. The air was humid-warm. The scent of bitter-tart orange blossoms, herbs and something citric like bergamot was in the air. Breathing was made easier by this he had the feeling. Slowly he moved on. White lilac grazed his nose. Climbing jasmine climbed up old statues. Tuberose grew along the way. Beds with white roses and sky-blue violets lined the paths. He circled the giant garden pond. Irises grew around him and exotic orchids. In the humid and warm night they released their nectar, which smelled of tempting honey. A bitter-sweet veil lay over everything. He was paralyzed by the smells and had to rest somewhere. He had almost arrived at the end of the garden!

The goal of all the gravel paths was the white pavilion, which stood in front of a huge oak tree. The woody aroma paired with the salty earthy moss with which the oak was covered. He went up the three small steps to the pavilion and sat down on the marble bench which stood there alone. He looked through the bright night over to the villa. There were the lights in the windows that he had lit himself. They glowed vanilla-warm. The huge villa looked from here almost small, so far away from the house he had himself. All the smells the garden emitted met up here and joined to form a huge, flowery-tart and sweetish whole of harmony and elegance. He was about to leave, when he saw what stood in front of his feet on the granite slab in the ground, carved in golden letters.

Every bud is a smile
Each sheet a reminder
Every flower deepest love
Each branch a way to you
Each end also a beginning
Every wither a blossom
Every kiss like nectar
In love
Viktor

He had created this garden for her out of love!
You have to protect something so wonderful! Thought he was and went back to the house deeply touched.
