T-Shirt Optimism
Today, I dug into the remotest corner of my perfume collection where I stored Rykiel Homme. It is a millennium leftover, and it fits perfectly into the optimistic mood of that time with all of that lightly coloured clothes and pastel kitchen furniture. Released in 1999, it was only allowed a few years on the market. When the internet start up companies became unemployed and the stock markets crashed in 2003, the hype was gone, and also the optimistic millennium perfumes were to go soon. For some of them, such as Rykiel Homme, it is a pity.
Actually, Rykiel Homme combines the complexness of a 20th century's perfume with a lighter and fresher style of the early years of the new century. It can be called an aquatic in its broadest sense, but the level of freshness that it provides is still moderate. There is no straightforward washing powder musk detectable, yet the message of the T-shirt shaped bottle is clear: a fragrance for the convenience of those who can afford wearing leisure clothes, or who don't care.
The scent notes of this perfume are remarkably integrated with each other. One could find some yuzu in the head note, something vaguely spicy and floral and a mellow but still fresh woody base. However, any imaginations that these notes might give you will not do any justice to the fragrance. The general idea seems to be the cleanliness of a freshly washed white T-shirt – just as the nice flacon indicates. There is almost no synthetic appeal, and thus, Rykiel Homme is much more preferable than, i.e., the later Reaction T-Shirt by Kenneth Cole. Rykiel Homme approaches the imagination of the clean T-shirt as much as possible within the means of classic perfumery.
I very much appreciate perfumes that deal with the wearer's clothing. You may give your environment pictures of lovely green meadows, fresh sea breeze or the musty and mysterious smells of oriental souks. In doing so, your perfume will lead anybody away from you. It is either the totally abstract fragrances, or the clothing fragrances that point at the wearer, and with this sort of perfumes, you show a quite straightforward presence.
Whereas the artistic quality of Rykiel Homme is beyond any doubt, the technical quality is not. Soon after I bought it in 2000, a white flocculation appeared in the bottle. However, it did not seem to affect the fragrance. I keep my Rykiel Homme in a dark place of course – it is still okay, but I now notice the very faint hint of bitterness that indicates its lifetime period is going to come to an end. I would love to recommend this remarkable perfume to you – however, in case you can find any leftover stock somewhere one can hardly tell about its state.
