Just Too Ordinary To Wear With A Straight Face
Yesterday was Friday, and I usually finish work early on Friday. So, I thought about going for a walk in a big shopping mall, to shake off a week of work. And it was precisely then that I came across a clothing store called Stradivarius, not so much for the clothes as for the perfumes displayed in plain view at the counter. To catch my attention were the very minimal, square bottles with amber colored glass and a wooden stopper, or something very similar to wood. Amid many perfumes classified as female, there were two for men, precisely n° 124 Steel and n° 125 Wood, 75ml / 2.6 fl.oz, at a small price of 9.90 euros. For scruple, I sprayed them on the paper strips, I smelled them, adored them, and immediately bought them. Once I got home, I quickly looked for them on the online site, and I discovered that there is also a third fragrance called n ° 126 Water. All three were launched in 2018 and are part of a limited edition.
I want to share my thoughts and experiences with n° 125 Wood, which belongs to the Amber-Oriental-Fougère family. It is intense but not overwhelming. The woodsy base makes it warm and sensual. Flowery, powdery, spicy, sweet, and durable, this cologne is more audacious than most men’s fragrances. N° 125 Wood is a classic fragrance with delightful modern components that give the scent a powerful but sophisticated presence in every place.
Beyond the vanilla note, the spiced mint and cinnamon kick in pretty strong from the beginning, along with the lavender. It can be an intense sort of opening, but it settles down fairly quickly to get to the best parts of the fragrance. What’s interesting is the slight bergamot note in the top, which adds a citrus touch to a freshly spiced start. When I got my first whiff of it on my own body, it reminded me of my childhood barbershop. N° 125 Wood aromas of herbal, mint, and citrus blossom recall the scents of old-fashioned talcum powders, pomades, and aftershaves.
As it dries down, the cinnamon starts to drop off for me, and I get more warmth and woods in the undertones. Amber and tonka bean with woods, mostly dry cedar, which are sitting at the base are expertly blended and are sweet, but not cloying. I expressly like the dry vanilla-tonka bean finish. It is creamier with a bit of a powdered element. It all comes together as very sweet with a minty green spice, sort of synthetic smelling, but that is mostly at the opening stages.
I do get a lot of similarities between n° 125 Wood and JPG Le Male. At least, in the main notes. Vanilla, lavender, and sandalwood are dominant notes. Despite its classic pyramidal structure of the notes, this perfume is quite linear, and its smell will stay the same the entire time. The blend of fresh aromatic herbs, lavender, and mint on one hand and warm, seductive vanilla and amber on the other is so skillfully done.
It is a reasonably safe scent, wearable just about anywhere, and it isn’t overpowering either. N° 125 Wood is good at what it does, which is provide a subtle scent, versatility, excellent projection, and longevity, and still manages to be quite sexy and alluring to the opposite sex. Durability wise, I usually get a few hours of use out of it, which, while not spectacular, is often enough for most daily purposes. The projection would rate as moderate, but it is certainly not weak, in my opinion, either.
I would say n° 125 Wood is an excellent choice for a wintertime fragrance or even during the colder days of Fall. That’s when this cologne performs at its best. It is an essential and relatively inexpensive scent for guys to try out and maybe develop into daily wear. It’s very inoffensive and works for most occasions, from everyday life to more flirty situations. It’s not something that will make you stand out as unique, and maybe that’s a good thing for some guys.
