A breath of the South Seas
The longer I spend on fragrances, the more often I wonder why various experimental fragrances - defined as bulky, difficult, challenging - are so popular?
The hype surrounding unusual fragrances is apparently greater today than ever before. On the one hand, I am fascinated by the artistic spirit and the independent power behind it. On the other hand, however, for me it is only with great difficulty imaginable to actually wear such fragrances. These scents just don't trigger me, they frighten or overtax me; I just don't feel well.
But the niche market is merciless. Every new fragrance release must be even more daring and experimental. An independent London perfumer recently said, "If you want to have success, you can't play it safe."
Often we see in which direction any art forms will develop, and we can guess reasonably well what will be hyped soon. Not like that in the scent world. It's old people fighting young people, designers fighting niches... it's getting more and more fancy. The clientele can of course be pleased about the large offer.
Right in the middle of this battle for every customer, Dr. Teone Reinthal positions himself stoically and confidently. Their fragrances are complete and guaranteed to be natural, with extraordinarily deep compositions, mostly derived from a chyprene structure. The list of her already published fragrances is very long.
However, Dr. Teone Reinthal stands for a world in which fragrances should lead to a standstill. It's a time-out that Teone wants to give us. This special woman is a role model. Life tried so many times to bring Teone to his knees. She kept getting up. In a moment almost homeless - today a doctor, writer, gifted painter and a successful perfumer. So goes life!
"I don't want to negatively stir up my customers, that's what life and its pace are all about. My scents are here to lead the wearer back to himself and to calm him inwardly...yes, indeed, to ground you again with beauty"... Teone told me in our last conversation.
A jewel stands out particularly as radiant and hypnotizing. It is the first signature scent of the Australian shaman: "Fred and Ginger Lilly".
The fragrance was launched in summer 2018 as part of the (Australian) winter collection. In this fragrance everything revolves around the ginger lily. Anyone who has ever visited the South Seas is promptly reminded by this fragrance of the first moment when you are greeted by a fresh and spicy sweetness in the air.
That's exactly how "Fred and Ginger Lilly" smells in the first few minutes. The strong presence of oak moss (vacuum distilled by Teone himself) also gives the fragrance a wonderful coolness. It's the perfect summer scent.
After many hours, the fragrance becomes a little more mature. The now clearly recognizable chypres structure is of an enchanting beauty. Now the scent is reminiscent of the beautiful moments at dinner outside, somewhere on Maui.
Now I see what Teone was trying to tell me. Their fragrances carry you away from this hectic world into a world of smiles, song and good food in the midst of the most beautiful places on earth.
This fragrance is definitely not European-commercial. The fragrance industry would say it lacks radiance and stamina. "Fred and Ginger Lilly" speaks with a soft voice.
It doesn't always have to be loud and complicated, sometimes a simple and quiet "I love you" is all we need.
