Oud For Gourmand Lovers...
Oud for Love opens with a fine aged whiskey note before quickly adding saffron spice with just a taste of the rubbery real oud to come. As the fragrance enters its early heart the early whiskey evaporates, leaving the saffron to join clove spice as compliment to the now starring oud with hints of sweet caramel, relatively thick castoreum and shimmering vetiver all rising from the base in additional support. During the late dry-down the castoreum becomes more prominent as the oud slowly fades adding just a tad of slightly sweet amber to soften the composition as the fragrance fades out. Projection is excellent, and longevity is stellar at about 12 hours on skin.

Oud for Love like its sister scent (Oud Shamash) displays what real oud is capable of in a composition when placed in the hands of a super-star perfumer like Bertrand Duchaufour. Here Duchaufour focuses on a more gourmand mix with its boozy open and sweet caramel-laced heart. The oud used here is far from obscured, playing a much more prominent role in the composition than its sister scent, but like that fragrance it never is obnoxious or wild, as the saffron balances it nicely allowing the oud to add depth and a roundness. It should be noted that the composition gets relatively sweet and at times especially in the early heart it can get dangerously close to being cloying, pulling back just short of crossing the line. At $210 for 50ml, Oud for Love is far from inexpensive in relative terms, but considering the real Laotian oud utilized along with its outstanding performance metrics the price is a better value than on first glance. The bottom line is that while I slightly prefer the less sweet and even more polished Oud Shamash of the two sister compositions, Oud for Love is an excellent 4 star out of 5 rated composition in its own right that gourmand lovers in particular should find extremely appealing. Highly recommended!
