Per il Signore!
The fact that I want to discuss Aqua di Selva here in my very first review is perhaps a little cheeky... you could just as well ask a lawyer for a qualified opinion on Mozart's Jupiter Symphony. However, I have my reasons: This classic here really surprised me.

What do we have here? From the head to the heart to the base, nothing that has anything remotely to do with the usual shelf-ware from the usual chains. It starts with a citrus overture: Lime dominates only very briefly; within a few seconds, it takes its leave in the direction of a spicier, herbaceous note - thyme? I don't really notice pine, but there are other things that I can't really describe. More like a whole garden of spices. If you give the Acqua a few more minutes, the citrus notes - which have now clearly receded into the background - come through again. However, in a significantly different, more subtle form than at the beginning. An almost earthy, tart note remains, but not dirty - clean, clean, with a very slight powdery residual sweetness.

This fragrance is a show with several acts. This distinguishes it wonderfully from many later products, where after 10 seconds you already know what the water will smell like 2 hours later (still). The head, heart and base each have their own program, and it is amazing how far apart they are - and yet how harmoniously they merge into one another.

Lasting power: about 6-8 hours. Moderate sillage and projection. Not a party fragrance, not for rednecks, not for people under 40, but I can imagine it on many a bold lady. And of course on an urbane signore, where the fragrance only complements the stylish elegance that he already has without it.

A classic that i wished lasted longer
The 1st time I smelled Acqua di Selva was when will my cousin George sprayed it. The smell intoxicated me. This was back in 1987 when I was a teenager and I just had to find that fragrance. When I finally did it was a great buy at $20 a bottle the only problem was it didn't last very long on my skin. It is an eau de cologne concentration so i knew it wasn't gonna last very long but i don't even get 3 hours out of it. However I am in love with the smell just totally in love with it. I will never stop wearing it and the only time I do wear it is when the temperature outside is 90 degrees or above. If they ever come out with a parfum concentration I don't care if it costs $500 I'm buying that bottle! But I don't think that will happen as the cologne is very old since 1949.

The colour of the bottle is the programme
for this unique, timeless water of the forest.

In the beginning it starts citric fresh, only to slide relatively fast into the green and spicy. Dry spicy notes, such as basil, thyme, rosemary and rose geranium underlain by various woods take over the command.

All this is accompanied by a very successful lavender-tonka bean-oak moss Accord, which gives me the feeling of walking through a green summer forest.

The oakmoss and vetiver are very dominant in the base. The Vetiver has a completely blurred soil-like earthiness, which smells almost leathery to me.

H/S:

Acqua di Silva is certainly not a shelf life or Sillage monster, but I find 6-7 hours for an Eau de Cologne a very respectable value.

Conclusion:

Acqua di Silva is a classic Fougere perfume which, like no other, reproduces the scent of the forest, without smelling like a bath additive.

A must-have for fans of old school or green perfumes, but really only for those who love oakmoss and vetiver.

If You Like Evergreen Herbaceous Fragrances, Get This!
I love Acqua di Selva. It is now 64 years old, and does not smell dated to my nose. It opens with a tart lemon, fresh lavender, herbaceous pine. Smells clean and fresh in a non-laundry-musk or aquatic way.

After the fragrance settles a bit, touches of carnation, geranium make themselves known along with a wonderful musky cedar base. A bit of smoky vetiver makes it even more attractive. The final stages are a warm and gentle musk and the cedar. It is just an incredibly well-done fragrance.

Longevity from start to finish on my skin is about 4-5 hours, excellent for something that is an EDC. Sillage is light to moderate, so this fragrance is delightful and inoffensive to most people. You would have to douse yourself to overdo this one. A couple or three sprays in an office setting would give you a crisp, clean, and confident scent, that would last through most of the day.

Overall, I cannot speak highly enough of this excellent, yet inexpensive fragrance. Of course, it speaks for itself that it is 64 years old and is still highly regarded. I would rate this a solid 8 out of 10.

A Mediterranean Classic that smells wonderful if it only lasted longer.
