The royal oud
I was long - very long - looking for an oud fragrance that meets my criteria -real oud (oud content), intense, extraordinary, strong oud presence, noble bottle and uniqueness.
Does Zafar meet all my criteria? More about this later!

First of all, I now have every Oud Star through as well as almost all Kemi fragrances to make me a nice picture of all the fragrances.
My three favorites from the Oud Star collection are Alexandria II, Zanzibar and of course Zafar. For me, the fragrances have that certain something.

Zafar is for me the fragrance where you perceive the oud most beautiful and strongest.

The oud in Zafar is present at all times, yet wonderfully enveloped by other notes such as incense, cedar and subtle florals that are perceptible to me.

The scent progression is not so spectacular as I find, but I always find new facets of the fragrance, which impresses me so much - but this is normal for natural oud fragrances.

The oud in Zafar is beautiful - deep, slightly animalic, dark, powerful, present and high-quality. You notice the naturalness of the fragrance, especially just the Laotian oud.

According to the manufacturer, the oud is matured 15. years, but this tells me honestly little. The factors: distillation, location of the tree, age of the tree, extraction of the oud or its processing, etc., all these factors are crucial.
The oud in Ceylon - Malaysia - for example, smells more animal and fecal than the oud in Zafar, this can be recognized relatively quickly.
The oud in ilm is also softer, brighter and broader set up, but designed a little softer.
The oil content is equally crucial, where in Zafar has not been saved in any case!

Zafar acts very protective, self-confident, clear, profound on me, like no other fragrance.

It is for me real quality in a beautiful bottle.

A pure oud perfume would be boring for me, because I can then buy me the same pure oud oil, as well as a fragrance that reflects only light nuances of oud would also be boring, because if I am looking for an "oud fragrance", also wants a perfume where just the oud in all its glory radiates.
Therefore, Zafar has for me the perfect balance - at any time the eagle wood is beautifully coated.
With the durability and projection I struggled at first, but can now say that it is very high, especially on warmer days. The fragrance actually reacts differently on the skin every day. Also, it is clear to me that the scent habituation plays a role in the assessment, as well as moisture and warmth of the skin and the humidity, temperature or weather outside.
Therefore, I have also often asked my environment.

Conclusion to H&S : The shelf life is except neatly good with mostly over 10 hours.
The projection is very strong in the first hours and mostly beyond that still strongly perceptible - top!

I can every oud lover Zafar warmly recommend and maybe it is soon your treasure.

Finally a fragrance where the oud in the name really fits! Since Creed with their Royal Oud can cut off a slice!
Royal Oud is included in the Zafar.
Fake Royal Oud is present in the Creed.
Well well....
If you are looking for a beautiful, loving as well as strong fragrance where the oud is more active in the background, choose Alexandria II.

If you are looking for a rather smoky, spicy, osmanthus fragrance with already rather superficial oud, then choose Zanzibar.

If you are looking for a royal oud perfume, where the oud also shows full presence, choose Zafar.
Addendum : Since I have now tested Oud Luban extensively - since private property - I can mention that Oud Luban for me nobler, higher quality, more beautiful, (oud-heavy) works, than Zafar. Too times one must mention - at least my perception - that both fragrances act very similarly, nevertheless Oud Luban is simply more beautifully arranged. No alcohol, more oud, stronger intensity, on the whole, the fragrance seems (higher quality).

Should you like Zafar, I think you feel more comfortable with Oud Luban :-)

Vetiver in the centre, iridescent scent
Zafar starts with a strong medicinal smell. Then more and more a woody, earthy note comes through, something leathery and flowery develops in the further course. Later I thought to smell a Violacea scent, which surprised me very much. Up to this point I was enthusiastic about Zafar, but unfortunately the shimmering scent impression was quickly gone. Because of the small sample I had only applied one drop, this may have falsified the test a bit. I smelled vetiver from start to finish, which goes very well with oud. However, I had the impression that the vetiver had clearly overlapped everything else. All in all I find Zafar a well done Oud perfume.

God I am addicted !!
Does anyone knows if it has been reformulated? I really loved this one...I was in the store spraying on my wirst some sospiro fragrances and the assistant forced me to spray zafar ( I dont like strong bad smelling ouds ) and I was like " bleeeeeaaahhh " So disgusted...then I went home and something happened in my mind. I kind of took this like a sign of weakness, like A lose challange so I told myself lets go back and spray it again and give this shit a full wearing ! ... I was walking outside and Already I was feeling amazing emotions !! It starts abit cheesy and opulent( the blue cheese smell comes from the presence of a fresh crisp green apple note in the accord ) then the rosy pepper comes and wow..so so so elegant and the bad smell stays in the back gorund making you addicted to it and I have to smell it everyday from the noq empty sample...like a drug. Sooo smooth....so soft cloud not loud but noticable and is not safe at all, people have such funny reactions when smelling this on me still didnt understand what they think but looking at their faces is like " wha ..what...what the fuck ks that ??? " they maybe dont even imagine that's a cologne. Really this is not safe but a fragrance you wear for yourself it has a calming effect and will get you addicted. The elegance btw is out of this world...please if you have a decant or want to share a bottle keep me in consideration.

Performance is abit strange with xerjoff...I know they have been reformulated, I can see it..I can like seeing that the power is limitated by a watering down.

High Priced Muckefuck?
When the availability of a good is limited as it seems to be the case with natural oud oil, high prices are not the only effect. Whatever is available is used sparingly, and there are attempts to replace it with something more or less resembling. This must have been the situation during and after WWII, when coffee, their favourite beverage, was hardly available to the Germans. Instead, there was “Muckefuck” - a coffee replacement made of barley malt. And the few leftover coffee beans were blended with succory. There is a German word for this way of coping with the situation, and it has also become a widely known expression for English speakers: “Ersatz”.

Metaphorically speaking, I admit, Zaraf is not pure ersatz, but it has been thoroughly blended with succory. Whoever only knows the Muckefuck by Montale and others might become confused by Zafar: the smell of the natural oil is far away from the respective oud ersatz by Givaudan and Firmenich.

For me, the smell of Zafar was not completely unfamiliar since it contains those typical animalic and fecal notes that can make natural oud oil so attractive. Yes, that's really in it, and it has at least average quality. Zafar is not a perfume in the literal sense of this word. In the first place, Zafar is woody, and this is basically also what oud is about. Any other ingredients serve only one purpose: to – well – extend the impression of natural oud oil. This is still very attractive: next to the warm, woody note there is something tart, and then there are hints of a transparent, ethereal camphorous note. In the base, I also got the impression of a little bit of smoky amber. Longevity is about 3 hours on my skin; after this, there are only leftover traces.

I resisted the temptation to buy since I know something better: Dahn Oud Al Shams by Ajmal. Zafar is roughly resembling this natural oud perfume, especially concerning the animal and fecal aspects. But this Arab perfume is in every way superior to Zafar, and most of all, it is not extended with ersatz.

With about 300 € per 50 ml (~390 USD / 1,7 fl) Zafar is the most expensive fragrance within Xerjoff's Oud Stars series. As a comparison: Dahn Oud Al Shams is available at ASL Dubaishop for 61 USD / 1 fl plus shipping plus duty taxes. Only the unfortunate circumstance that the Arab perfume shops do not sell samples of their Dehnal ouds allows Xerjoff to ask such a high price for a rather moderate quality.

Strongly peppered oud. Slightly animalic, as is typical for this series, later warms up and develops an incense note.

A slightly smoky, yet challenging spicy-animalic Winter fragrance, slowly settling to a dusty earthy-woody base. Keep sprays to a minimum!
