A Rosy Dawn Over The City
In the spring of 2021, in collaboration with the master perfumer Alberto Morillas, Zara launched three fragrances inspired by a hypothetical trip to Spain, touching three of the major cities: Sevilla, Barcelona, and Madrid. This splendid collection gives us three different fragrances to wear in three distinct moments of the journey.
With Morning Sunray in Sevilla, the city that gave birth to the legendary master perfumer, the nose captured the atmosphere that reigns at dawn near the Seville cathedral. It is in Seville, that Alberto Morillas experienced his first olfactory emotions. In the heat of Andalusia, the scents of Fleur d'Oranger, jasmine, rosemary and incense bathed all of his youth. Here we find the harshness of the flowers and fruits of the citrus trees that line the city's streets, the freshness of the flowers that overflow in the courtyards and on the windowsills, and the darker and more mysterious notes fill the air inside the Cathedral. I have been in Seville for a weekend of pleasure. It was mid-January, but spring was already in the air in this sunny city, so that I could appreciate all the sensations captured in this fragrance.
It is herbaceous, citrusy, straw, and hay, moist with dew, slightly alcoholic like an infusion of aromatic herbs. That's that blast that welcomes me. From this pale yellowish water, I feel the pungent smell of the bitter citrus, oranges, and lemons that populate the streets of Seville. Many aromatic herbs envelop the citrus fruits. I get an aroma similar to the straw and hay, herbal, from the aromatic tarragon and rosemary. The opening is all about medicinal lemony, sweet citrus blossom in the background, and fresh spices. Imagine cutting some tarragon leaves and rosemary needles and then pouring fresh lemon juice over. That's the balmy lemon aroma I get.
Like the sky shades at dawn, the fragrance turns rapidly. There is a bouquet of jasmine growing in every patio, with green geranium leaves placed in the sun on the windowsills of the houses. Slowly, the jasmine brings softness to the sour opening. It looks more comfortable and easier to wear now. There is a soft floral note and a bit of citrus. The scent is bright and beautiful. A smoky and resinous aroma fills the air. The cypresses in the patio of the Catedral Metropolitana de Santa Maria de la Sede de Sevilla release resinous scents under the first rays of the sun.
In the dry-down, the citric accord calms down, and a dense cloud of incense oozes from the Cathedral, just diffused for the first function of the long day. I visit the Cathedral, and the smell of olibanum now grows and mixes with that of the warm, amber wood of the benches and the moss that covers the wetter walls facing north—what a dreamy redolence. Labdanum gives off dense, warm, balsamic, and amber notes with sweet, honeyed, and woody nuances.
Fresh, last almost all the morning. A daily scent for Spring and Summer mornings, with weak sillage and longevity, it performs as an EDC on my skin. Reapply if you want to smell good until the evening. That said, although it's not groundbreaking, for less than €20, it is a pleasing fragrance. The legendary Morillas is the author of a seemingly endless line of iconic fragrances, and this one should not go unnoticed.
I base the review on a 100ml bottle I have owned since June 2021.
