A Candle You Can Burn On Forever
I want to clarify that my review is based on the new edition released on the market in the fall of 2022, which is part of the Vibrant Leather Collection and is called Encens Vibrant Leather. As the previous version was only available online, I couldn’t smell it and can’t tell if it was the same fragrance. Encens is a revision of the original Vibrant Leather, taking it in a more resinous-incense direction and creating a whole new animal.

In Encens bubbling opening, there is a smoky note, incensed, woody, balmy, spicy, leathery undertone, and a fresh, balsamic, resinous bouquet that I associate more with pine. Behind that coniferous smell, the citrus acidity strives to exude with velvety bergamot and a spicier lemon. An output that is more resinous and less citrusy and, in some respects, reminds me of the Vidal Pino Silvestre shower gel. Inevitable is the pine resin, which is in the face, while the citrus is nothing but a murmur. The more the fragrance grows, the more it gains green and herbaceous shades. It gets the dewy facet of the bamboo leaves that blends with sticky elemi and something peppery and aromatic, perhaps the pepper’s wood. When the green and citrus notes subside, the spicy note of pepper is dominant, unmistakable. How strange. When I first tested it, the opening was almost identical to the original Vibrant Leather Eau de Parfum, but today it looks different to me.

Encens continues its journey and enters the heart phase with a spicy pepper still very present, while the citrus notes have disappeared. There is a change, of course, and the perfume gains soapy and smoky tones. You perceive the smokiness of the incense that slowly mixes with the pine resin. I can’t help but think about when I was a kid and enjoyed picking new pine shoots or opening pine cones, to smell that beautiful, slightly minty balsamic smell of the resin. I get the familiar spices and a trail of smoky incense, which appears like smoky vetiver.

In the dry-down, Encens features earthy notes of patchouli, herbal in the old school manner, which combines with animalic leather nuances. Burnt incense with patchouli and pine, for a smoky atmosphere that echoes the smell of a church with greener and more woody accents. The woods here are much darker and richer than in the original, and the patchouli adds a nice earthy undertone to the dry-down. The leather is subdued, bastardised by the smoky incense.

Bold but not cheeky or loud; complex but never treacherous. It’s not quite sweet, not quite dry. And it’s not a dull smell, but something soothing and sexy, and even if intended for a male audience, I might think that such a loving woman could do it. What do others say? There’s a live concert tonight. I’m getting ready, and I think Encens might be suitable for the occasion. I pick up a friend of mine, she gets in the car, and even before saying goodbye she says “What a wonderful smell you have!”. It should be enough. Because of its resinous and smoky nature, I think it is ideal for the misty days and nights of fall. Unique. It did not disappoint me at all, even though I was a little hesitant. Smoky incense dominates in the beginning and sounds very true. At first glance, the fragrance may seem rather dark and heavy, but the base looks like a light, clean and smoky aura. Longevity is below average, but sufficient for an evening.

I base the review on a 100ml bottle I have owned since October 2022.

Scent overall is good like the original Vibrant Leather but with a twist of smokiness, sharp fresh pleasent. Performance is quite bad 1-2hours.

Opens uncannily akin to VL original, then olibanum kicks in with all its smokiness followed by earthy and leathery nuances. Enticing!
