Zagara, Enchanting Sicilian Scent
The wonderful Sicilian countryside offers extraordinary spectacles, including orange blossom flowers and lush citrus trees. The Zagara, white flowers, with their scent and their delicacy, have become an unmistakable symbol of Sicily. Their name derives from the Arabic terms Zahara, meaning "to shine, sparkle with white", and Zahr, meaning "flower". In particular, by orange blossom, we mean orange and lemon blossom, as well as bergamot. The meaning of the orange blossom is very profound in the language of flowers. It represents fidelity in love and is, par excellence, the flower dedicated to weddings as a representation of virginity. This scent makes you feel like you are walking in a forest and connects you with nature. Zagara or orange blossom has a white floral bouquet bordering on the feminine. The soapiness of this one is definitely out of the chart.
Wild Coolness is a plank of solid wood and citrus fragrance with soap and fresh touch. It isn't a sweet scent to me and leans more on things' clean and soapy side. Of course, it has all the characteristics of citrus fruits, but it also has a woody side that makes it different from regular cologne. If you are familiar with citrus blossoms, you will recognize some similarities with niche and designer fragrances such as Neroli Portofino Eau de Parfum, Bright Neroli, and Bvlgari Man Wood Neroli, to name a few.
From the start, this is a stunning green and herbaceous summer version, so crisp, fresh and floral, with a considerable amount of neroli and bitter orange blossom. I receive a burst of citrus blossom blending with unripe citrus peels and powdery bergamot, crunchy, clean, modern, and unisex, with refreshing undertones of bitter green grapefruit. It is the typical smell we associate with washed clothes hanging out in the sun to dry. For many, this opening is reminiscent of Neroli Portofino Eau de Parfum, but according to my nose, Wild Coolness immediately takes another path, so I advise you not to stop at the first notes.
In the heart, when the explosion of citrus blossoms calms down, I feel stronger the orange blossom gliding lazily in a dry touch of fresh wood shavings, a light wood that provides a masculine and manly feel. The wood used here is closer to raw green wood than the typical pencil shavings variety. It harmonizes well with neroli through the green accord shared in both. At this intermediate stage, Wild Coolness is not metallic like Neroli Portofino Eau de Parfum. Neroli has a spicy scent that can also be metallic at times. Instead, it's saltier and woody like Bvlgari Man Wood Neroli. I also catch a dry, solid, earthy tinge as if the papyrus leaves are mingling with the mixture.
It ends with a swoosh of white musk with its soft and clean vibe. I get a hint of ambergris, with its saltiness and sophistication, and a bit of late-stage white musk appears more clearly, extending the clean cut of the cotton shirt I felt at the opening. The ZARA perfumer specifically wanted something very woody and was inspired by a sample of Issey Miyake's recent "Wood & Wood" offering. In the final phase, Wild Coolness goes from the original Bvlgari Man Wood Neroli to L'Eau d'Issey pour Homme Wood & Wood. The scent does not become sweet or cloying in the final stage but releases an almost leathery trail. Overall, I find WIld Coolness rare and remarkable.
This Wild Coolness will be the right choice for everyday use if you like light perfumes. Although it has a dominant citrus blossom accord, it doesn't have a distinctly feminine smell and instead has a thick woody scent mixed with citrus. It's a great scent, so clean and light it won't offend anyone. Very excellent sillage and longevity, not enormous, but just below average. The initial citrus blast soon turns into a leather scent. So, daytime perfume for the months from spring to summer, safe to wear in the office, for an evening date, for a summer evening or on a lazy weekend in complete relaxation.
I base the review on a 100ml bottle I have owned since June 2022.
