To Rise From The Ashes
The phoenix is a mythical bird that is very popular among many civilizations. Like a bird that is said to burst into flames and then rise from its ashes periodically, the phoenix represents resurrection, life, death, birth, renewal, transformation, and immortality, to name a few. It exists in different versions of various mythologies. It's known as the phoenix in Greek mythology, but here are a few other versions. So we have Simurgh for Persian mythology, Bennu for Egyptian mythology, and Feng Huang for Chinese mythology. His immortality comes at the cost of killing himself and being reborn every time. This shows tremendous courage and faith in the ultimate goal. Whenever you feel connected to this mythical bird, it's time to change your life and strive to improve. The phoenix will accompany you on your journey and lend you its strength, healing abilities, and good luck.
Fire Phoenix seems to own the secret of what that mythical bird means. I have come across this cologne by chance since the perfume shop I visited recently was selling it for just €14 for the 75ml stunning bottle. When I tested it immediately, it reminded me of something I could not associate with, instantly capturing me. Woody, assertive pencil shavings, dewy, intense violet leaves, musky, earthy like the deep oakmoss. Honestly, I did not recognize all the top notes since the aromatic herbs are very strong and come up quickly in the opening. I was somewhat expecting a hot, sweet, and mellow aroma, given the reddish color of the package and bottle, but no. The initial stage is fresh, spicy, green, and woody. Subdued bergamot vanishes momentarily. Then the blood orange adds some bittersweet tinge. At the same time, the basil creates a greenish aura. Miserably, I do not get any floral nuance from the apple blossom, maybe cause I have no clue about how it smells like.
The more the initial blast subsides, the more it gets aromatic, resinous, leafy, milky, and mineral. The lavender & rosemary are dominant, with herbal facets, and my beloved fig leaves add a dry, milky, and mostly mineral touch to this greenish heart. Many of the middle notes are from aromatic herbs. The oozing aroma is like a "Bouquet Garni," meaning garnished bouquet, a bundle of herbs tied with string, including thyme, bay leaves, sage, and rosemary. Additionally, here we have even a bunch of juniper berries to enforce the scent. An underneath bitterness grows and grows, so dewy, dark, herbaceous, and akin to the fresh male sweat rich in muskiness.
Thereupon, the moss and cedar appear softly and stay there for the rest of its life. Thankfully, the tonka doesn't overdose, so I can capture the roasted sweetness of the beans without going overboard on the sentimental factor. The dry down is musky and woody, more from the cedar and less from sandal or cashmere. Earthy musk radiates and governs the bottom, with a hint of sweetness from the tonka and resinous dryness offered by the cedar wood chips. If I had to compare the final track, I would dare to say that Fire Phoenix is much more like the dark black smell of pitch boiling in hell than the fire-burning mythological bird. But that's okay because this final path is enchanting, fascinating, and intriguing.
I like to wear it during gloomy days when the air is foggy, damp, and stuffy; some notes are better perceived and amplified by humidity. This is London's scent, where the weather is unstable and almost rainy daily. I feel it lasts long enough on my skin, even after many hours of wearing it. The sillage is good and not annoying, so I can venture to wear it even in the office without offending my colleagues, but the ideal is during social events, an aperitif outdoors on a roof terrace. And the projection looks excellent, given the compliments I've already received. My favorite seasons to wear it are spring and autumn, and perhaps summer nights of holidays are fine too, being a fresh fougére.
I'm basing my feelings on a bottle I've owned since June 2023.
