a cotton candy plastic fruit bowl of a bad poem
I am testing BDK’s Ambre Safrano and thinking of a collection of contemporary poetry that I’ve been reading. I’m making this connection because it’s really bad poetry. And I am now 0/2 with the samples that I have tried from BDK Parfums. Now I realize both poetry and perfume and all forms of art are intensely subjective, and what’s considered “bad” in terms of any of it can have a lot to do with personal preference. Ambre Saffano is meant to take us on a faraway olfactory journey, but I think they’ve vastly overestimated the distance this scent has the capability of encompassing because the places that it shows us seem pretty limited.. It goes as far as your laptop screen or the phone, a few inches from your face, as it’s the olfactory equivalent of fanfiction without a single measure of spice, none of the characters have any chemistry, and the writing is weirdly overwrought for a story with absolutely no plot, and then you take that uninspired mess and run it through some sort of poetry generator, and you end up a word salad that somehow manages to be nonsensical and boring and not only are you not enjoying it, it’s actually giving you a bit of a headache. And if I haven’t told you anything about what it actually smells like, that’s because I truly do not know. But imagine a bowl of plastic fruit. A facsimile of fruit, of something sweet and seasonal and juicy that once existed somewhere, but the person who molded this fruit maybe has never even seen this fruit. Imagine you melted down to a slurry those waxy, musty plastic apples and grapes and bananas and dumped in a Costco-sized bag of Truvia, and attempted to make cotton candy with it. And then, for some ungodly reason, you wrote a poem about it. Ok, this review is all over the place, and you’re probably walking away from it dumber than when you started. If it’s any consolation, I am too.

long lasting saffrony
The opening is dry and absolutely saffrony with a creamy somewhat honeyish amber.

I like it a lot!

After some minutes the dryness goes halfway away and it settles still honeyish-saffrony. It’s warm, embosoming and quite elegant.

I can’t follow the amount of negative reviews and especially the silly text rated as “in depth” with a bunch of nonsensical gibberish…

I’d even say if you’re female and enjoy rather masculine scents with spices, Amber and saffron as base that’s a safe buy.

I enjoy it a lot and it’s not too sweet nor gourmand, on the contrary, it‘s a very elegant and rich truly unisex scent. It’s got that sweet honeyish note somewhere in the background but it doesn’t stitch. The saffron doesn’t allow it.

I didn’t like Velvet Tonka from BDK, for me, nauseatingly sweet as I also dislike Kirke (a mess of unfathomable dimensions), Initio’s aphrodisiac (blergh), MFK Gentle fluidity gold (I like the silver tho!) and other candy-bombs that for me smell cheap by the way…

If you would enjoy an uncommon and dry creamy ambery saffrony fragrance in your collection, just get it. Actually the single scent I like from the House BDK.

It itches
My brain tingles, it shakes me, my eyes roll backwards in my head.
This scent scratches and pricks me in places I didn't even know before.
I don't like saffron, I don't like incense.
Why
Did I test it then, you ask? Well, I also find tuberose absolutely horrible, but BDK has done it so well that I like it in Tubereuse Imperial.
Hence the attempt.
But this one is my final boss.
Smoky, ethereal and almost sacred incense paired with some dusty leather, a whole army of crocuses and a single, down-rolled rose.
It overwhelms me beyond measure and pushes me to my limits.
It's far too much for me, too smoky, too spicy, urgs.
It holds up very well (unfortunately for me, poor me) and shines wonderfully (enhahaha, please help me).
No, no, really not.

Spicy amber suede
Ambre Safrano opens with pretty much exactly it's namesakes: amber and saffron. Then, the other notes join in, and for a while the most prominent part of the sillage is a spicy pepperiness carried on top of a creamy suede that is lightly reminiscent of Drakkar Noir. I kept thinking I was wearing something that was vaguely shaving cream (grapefruit-bergamot) ish but not quite. The sillage is quite impressive for the first few hours and then it does recede in the drydown, a very nice amber that is dominated by vanilla, but paired with a touch of spice and some woody aspects. On my skin I didn't really encounter plum or rose, except perhaps in the places where the saffron and pepper met the base, if that makes sense. I also didn't really get any leather except for the saffron impression of suede.

It's one of the more unique takes on amber that I've come across, personally, and I have a collection chock full of ambers. I think you should wear whatever you want, and I would certainly wear it, but agree with the general consensus that it leans slightly masculine.

Sprayed from the tester bottle at ZGO Perfumery in SF on skin on a 75F day. Worn ~9hrs at time of writing.

Saffron's dark side
"Ambre Safrano" was an absolute chance (lucky) find. The best friend in the world pointed out the row of bottles in the perfumery, as I had never heard of (or smelled) bdk myself. I picked up the first bottle, sniffed the spray head and put it down again. A second later, I picked it up again. "Wait a minute! It's not even that bad!"

What immediately won me over to the fragrance was its spicy-woody, warm but not cloying component that remains at the end.

Of all the components, I perceive the saffron most succinctly. Immediately after spraying it on, alcoholic, fruity notes rise to the nose, like pickled fruit. But after just a few minutes, these give way to the all-dominant saffron. There is a hint of rosé and a pleasant freshness. Then smoky, resinous notes combine exquisitely with the characteristic saffron scent.

From now on, the development is very linear. In other words, I don't notice any major changes until the fragrance fades. Saffron plays first fiddle for about 5 hours, accompanied by incense. A subtle, well-balanced sweetness mingles in the background - probably the sandalwood and perhaps also the vanilla. Fortunately, I don't perceive the latter as a vanilla fragrance at all.

On the same day, I tested another saffron fragrance: Widian's "Sahara". One on the left, the other on the right. And the two are not so dissimilar. At least the saffron dominates in both. However, while "Sahara" is a rounded, pleasing fragrance that is entirely suitable for unisex wearers, "Ambre Safrano" certainly has its rough edges. It is harsher, darker, more masculine. This was probably also responsible for the differentiated reaction of the world's best friend: while she liked to sniff "Sahara" and nod appreciatively, she sucked the scent of "Ambre Safrano" almost voluptuously into her delightful nostrils and made very melodious noises between pleasure and excitement. No question - "Ambre Safrano" had to move in with me.

The somewhat clunky, chunky-looking bottle makes quite a valuable impression when it is in the hand; and so, in my opinion, there is only one big minus point: the fragrance fades incredibly quickly. Its longevity is really in the lower mid-range and the projection is therefore only significant within the first two hours or so.

All in all, however, an elegant, warm oriental that doesn't need to ride the oud wave, but delivers its very own, rather pithy interpretation of the saffron theme. My opinion: definitely try it!

Opening was very nice- deep, churchy incense- but was barely noticeable after 1.5 hours.

Opening warm-spicy with plum, but as a whole, this scent is Initio's Blessed Baraka without the muskiness/sweetness/sillage.

The opening is nice but it quickly becomes an odd smelling creation with the black leather overpowering the other notes. Disappointing.

Kinda cool saffron-ambery-vanilla scent. This smoky plum and harsh leathery facets make it balanced with sweeter notes.

Fruity plum and leathery saffron. Powdery vanilla in the dry down. Would have liked a more prominent incense note.
