Stories from the Augean stable
When I go to a perfumery for advice, and I now enjoy being advised, I am usually quite open-minded with one small restriction. I never leave anyone in any doubt that I prefer lighter fragrances and know next to nothing about oriental notes. And so it came to pass that in one week in two old Bavarian towns in three perfumeries, this fragrance was recommended to me in the warmest of words and with the utmost insistence. So what else can I do but lead my nose to the test strip. (Actually the other way around, but that reads funny.)

There it is, a small square with golden liquid and a solid gold plaque and an even more solid gold metal button. Not too big and yet self-confident for a first. I like that. Just like the black box with bold, golden print, which is barely bigger than the bottle and not, as is now often the case, the size of a shoe box.

The fragrance is just as the name promises. Oud envelops you from the very first sniff and gives you the certain promise that it won't let you go any time soon. Even if I'm not a great specialist in oud, I now know that there are domesticated, soft, light, light oud and a few less tame cousins that are a little darker, darker, drier, heavier, more animalic. And it is precisely this animalic oud that is used here in all its glory. I can't help but think of the Augean stables here and secretly hope that I don't have to channel two rivers through my nostrils to get this smell out again. But that's how it is in the end. This rather dark and animalic oud is soon joined by a sweet and very aromatic (Bulgarian?) rose in somewhat larger quantities - in other words, nothing that could have been described in a container size such as a dozen or a bouquet, but rather as a bed, garden or field. You might guess that I'm not a particularly big fan of expressive roses either. So my enjoyment of this fragrance is just increasing. It's possible that I can also smell some lavender from afar, but I don't want to swear to it. In any case, this impression was not strong. If you look at the fragrance pyramid, fresh and green notes are also said to be present alongside other ingredients. Unfortunately, I am unable to perceive these, my nose is too overloaded and overwhelmed with oud and rose. Nor can I speak of a fragrance progression: Oud and its best friend, the rose, came and stayed until the bitter end.

I carried the fragrance strip, which had two sprays on it, in the breast pocket of my shirt for some time, maybe two or three hours, then unfortunately it became too much for me. Three days later, the shirt still smelled distinctly of "Oud 31". My skin took on the scent through the shirt and I still smelled subtly but clearly recognizable "Oud 31" the next morning. So you get your money's worth here. You should try to apply this fragrance in homeopathic doses, otherwise vehement unfortunately quickly becomes penetrating.

I'm trying to imagine where men and women - I'll call the fragrance 50/50 unisex - can wear such an expressive, potent scent. In the theater, on the train or in the office, I imagine it tends to be difficult. That leaves the private environment, the shisha bar, a club or a large Turkish/Arabic wedding in a large hall, if not a hall. Yes, that's where I imagine this fragrance would be in good hands, even though I've only attended two large Turkish weddings myself.

... and so it came to pass that, once again, these latest perfume tastings did not result in a friendship for life between me and oud. Maybe, if it didn't have the thorny rose in tow again!

Oud lover tests Oud 31
I approached the matter completely neutrally, only the fragrance counts! When I found it here in Munich at Parfümerie Brückner, I was initially delighted to be able to test the fragrance for free, and I found it quite interesting, as it was supposed to contain real oud and this in high quality, according to Kai's formulation. I also wrote to Kai's service department or rather his employees, who replied very nicely and jovially. I was answered as follows:

"Hey Elias, I have consulted with Kai. The quality of the oud is similar to Ensar Oud or Nabeel. However, we can't say where the oud comes from as we don't receive any information from the perfumer. It is a trade secret. I'm sorry we can't give you any more information! :-("

And:

"100%. It was very important to Kai that only the best ingredients go into the perfume. Not just the oud, but also all the other substances that go into it. :-) As a little "proof": The perfumer behind it is already involved in many top sellers of well-known brands. Among others, bangers like Nefs, Erba Pura or Salam. If the quality were poor, the perfumes would not have made it to global success. Whether you can smell the oud strongly depends very much on how "sensitive" or good your nose is. Some people only notice it a little, others find it far too much. Kai and I would say it's just the perfect blend: not overpoweringly strong and not too faint that you barely notice it. If you wear pure oud oil, then you can't go wrong with Oud31. At least then you don't have to worry that you won't like it. You should be an oud lover if you buy Oud31. It's definitely not for beginners - they would clearly find it too strong. For real "oud freaks", the oud might even be a little stronger. As I said, Kai and I find it perfectly balanced. :-)".

As you can see, very nice employees, but I have to be honest and mention that these personalities unfortunately do not have that much knowledge about oud or the quality of the ingredients of Oud 31. Especially the statement that the perfumer has brought out many hits like Xerjoff etc. is absolutely no reference of quality, this is absolutely not the case
Well, I don't want to write another long text about oud, but let's get to the fragrance :

Adequately explained, the fragrance is not bad, no, but the price in relation to a Xerjoff Oud Star, Fragrance Du Bois or even Bortnikoff is a cheek and that as someone who basically sells online himself. Furthermore, I would like to make the assertion - you are welcome to provide me with proof that this is not the case - that the oud in Oud 31 contains a cheap plantation oud, just like in Xerjoff etc.. For me, this in no way justifies the price in relation to the quality of the fragrance. If you compare the fragrance to the somewhat cheaper Bortnikoffs, you can only laugh and Bortnikoff doesn't have the big buyers and you can smell quality there In itself, the fragrance is not bad, especially the drydown knows how to please, because it becomes cuddly, but initially this cheap oud is really bad for me, but of course, I'm used to other qualities it's primarily about the theme and the price and that's just (oud) and that's exactly what I criticize! If it were a subordinate component, my assessment would be different, but the price doesn't justify itself for me!!!

The durability and projection are very strong, I like that!

Overall not my cup of tea!

Read the staff comments, test the fragrance, get into oud and you'll know what I mean!

Kai may be a really cool guy, I don't know, but the fragrance is really not mine, sorry!

An end in sight? Oud to the wink
Oud Rose combinations gebents like sand by the sea, and meanwhile one feels them as simply tired. From this fragrance I have first only heard, and he was yes partly ripped and partly very praised. I have left with a whole 2 days and tested him very slowly and thoroughly. So, to be honest, and only therefore one is yes here I must say that I am very disappointed. Oud 31 starts off pungent and caustically fecal. Dirty and stinky as is often the case with fragrances that take real oud, but unfortunately not the expensive good one, but what is left. From trips to the Middle East I know good, unfortunately astronomically expensive oud, but this is much much better and nobler. I do not understand how one wants to smell like this fragrance, which reeks of excrement and which one can only find disgusting when freshly sprayed on. You need endless time for him, because after a good 2 hours on the skin, the salient disgusting is almost gone, and increasingly makes way for a beautiful, unfortunately very often smelled rose. He is then quite feminine and oscillates between sweet and oud- spicy back and forth. Durability is really present, the flacon is beautiful and lies very well in the hand. Unfortunately, he is absolutely nothing special, I would have put up with the long wait if he would go in a new, fresh or spicy or gourmand direction. But so? No I think that will not give a 2nd edition, the price is much too high.

Soccer match
Hello everyone,
i have heard many divided opinions about the fragrance of Kai Porten (Oud31). Especially very critical reviews read. Therefore, I naturally asked myself the question is the really so bad?!.... As usual, I had to try the fragrance and make my own opinion. I was very excited what will come to me, because I am also of the opinion that the Kai has a good taste that is relatively similar to mine. Arrived in my perfumery of confidence (Heudorf in Stuttgart) the dear colleagues introduced me to the fragrance. I was really very shocked. Very very shocked. The first impression was really so >> "amk what this for a garbage" which means as good as "very bad" . On the one hand balsamic with lavender which smelled totally unpleasant for me at the moment. I could now really list a lot of what the fragrance strip smelled for me (shit). Despite this, she gave me a tester with on the way. I then threw it into my toilet bag. A few days passed and I had like every weekend a soccer game and thought to myself "ey come wear the Oud 31 (tester) on.
It can not be that bad.
On the way to the sports field I already notice that my car smells very good, very pleasant, very interesting and I think to myself is that really the oud31??? Funny... until now I thought nothing of it. Arrived in the cabin where I greet my guys some colleagues came up to me and leaned with the nose on my neck... my neighbor said:,, brother, you smell sick." in today's youth language that means something like horny. At the latest on the court as the game went off and we had to defend a corner kick and one of the opponents said:,, ey what smells so good here!" was clear to me, okeyyyyyyy On Monday directly buy the fragrance. Changed 180 degrees my opinion on the fragrance. After the game, I wore the of course again on and found that the smells completely different on the skin and develops so great. So please test it really on the skin. I can really recommend the fragrance to all oud lovers.
Have fun testing!

Animalistic? Yep. Oriental? Definitely.
In my nose, the interplay of subtle animalic oud, soft rose and the oriental spices is a dream. Have longer been looking for a strong but portable oud fragrance, but has recently been disappointed by other fragrances rather by synthetic oud or by poor interaction of the fragrance notes.

For me, this fragrance does everything right, if one stands on elegant, yet powerful oud perfumes.

A dream for the winter, as autumn evenings.

Animalic rose-oud with a slight gourmand accord in the top. Plenty of stuff like this exists that smells smoother, e.g. Luxor from Xerjoff.
