Janus-faced dark summer island
Le Couvent des Minimes is a relatively small French house that uses high-quality ingredients to produce high-quality perfumes in the tradition of French haute parfumerie. This one is named after the small Pontine island of Palmarola, which is surrounded by rugged cliffs and extremely clear water and is only inhabited in summer.
This naming fits well with this perfume, which interweaves light citrus elements with darker tones. The start is citrusy and sharp-sour, for sure, but this note fades quickly and fades more into the background as jasmine moves more to the front and is underpinned more and more by woody notes. After that, the fragrance remains relatively stable and, despite its light and fresh acidity, becomes increasingly woody and definitely darker and also soapy, but otherwise does not develop significantly. The longevity is not from bad parents - 7 hours later, it is still clearly perceptible close to the skin - and the sillage is such that the fragrance is definitely noticeable over an arm's length.
All in all, a rather dry, aromatic, floral-woody fragrance with a dash of lemon, which despite its rather sunny orientation not only represents the summery side of the island well, but also the darker rocky and thoughtful abysses. Probably best worn on not too hot summer days, but also works in winter on not too cold days (tried again today).
