The Lagavulin among memos
This prelude is a strong piece! With a very strong leather accord I had expected after the pre-read descriptions and classifications; I was surprised and overwhelmed by the fantastic, dark smokiness, with which the leather comes along, and which is probably due to the oud. This immediately conjures up associations of winter evenings by the fireplace, in a leather armchair, with a sip of smoky and peaty Lagavulin Single Malt. Thus, "Iberian Leather" has me immediately on its side. It is anything but pleasing, rather rugged and edgy, rough. But at the same time of a balanced sophistication, because the different notes combine to a very balanced whole, which after the brilliant start becomes softer over time, without losing its pithiness.
After a short time, a somewhat fresher spiciness (coriander) joins the still dominant leather-smoke accord; very briefly even a par citrus hints are noticeable. Then the woody base becomes more present, in which the Atlas cedar plays a supporting role. The fragrance now becomes softer; the floral notes may be more prominent here, iris lends a certain powderiness. However, I cannot speak of the rose being particularly prominent or even dominant in the foreground, as mentioned in some reviews. Rather, the various aspects of the fragrance appear in the course of different perceptible, but remain in the background and carry or support so in turn and in their respective way the dominant leather accord. This thus remains lively and varied, so that the fragrance does not seem too monolithic.
To the conclusion (that is, much, much later), the fragrance then becomes increasingly gentle: sandalwood, musk, a touch of vanilla. As a counterpoint, only a trace of scratchy oud. The smokiness is barely noticeable, the leather has become supple soft, still remains long as a hint.
The durability is, as you would expect, excellent, the charisma at the beginning overwhelming and then very strong for a long time. In general, the performance could be characterized with the same understatement with which Rolls-Royce indicates the strength of its engines, as "completely sufficient in any situation". For this, the heraldic lion of León on the bottle is not a badly chosen symbolic animal, even if I find that the presentation here is not one of the most successful in the generally very stylish series - but that is of course a matter of taste and may see everyone differently. In any case, the packaging is as high quality as the fragrance. Cheap he is therefore truly not, but since you should not overdose him anyway, you also come with a modest amount quite far.
According to the manufacturer unisex, "Iberian Leather" is for me a very masculine fragrance. But the ladies may of course like to see it differently. On Lagavulin I was also made aware of a woman who has even named her cat after her favorite whiskey.
