Fresh citrus/pepper/woody mix, very agreeable
This release from Navitus Parfum x Chaos, Soleil Matin, is a fresh and aptly blue-bottled fresh mix of citruses, ginger, pepper, jasmine, ambroxan, woods, and musk. It fits with the mold of a modern freshie, usually in a men’s line, but is reasonably rich and dense, a clear easy winner. There’s also a musky sweetness to it, likely due to the opening citruses themselves, as it fades somewhat. And fittingly, it does not feel like any one citrus is dominant, but rather that it’s a bit of an ensemble, as the listed top includes mandarin, lime, orange, grapefruit, and lemon. Still, it’s not all that tart, even with the inclusion of lemon and grapefruit, leaning rather fresh and somewhat sweet, instead. With the pepper and ginger, there is certainly some spiciness, but this never overtakes the citrus, but rather exists in harmony with the citruses, slowly giving way to the woody, musky, smooth dry down.
Soleil Matin, like most of the Navitus Parfums releases that came before it, is priced at $195 for 100ml, under the $2/ml line that I usual regard as very reasonable for niche/independent perfumery.
While well-executed, Soleil Matin is a notch below Reve Nuit in terms of creativity and provocativeness, but it’s nonetheless an agreeable, reasonably strong-performing freshie, something that anyone could enjoy, even though it fits more stereotypically as a men’s warm weather scent. Absolutely worth trying as anyone could love this. It’s likely closest to Elation as far as prior Navitus releases.
