Sharp, spicy, camphor-rich
Sampling Pineward Perfumes Katabatic, a late 2022 release, a sharp and spicy mix that neither falls into the “pine resin” nor gourmand subgenre, and as such is a bit of an outlier for the house. It has a prominent camphor note—sharp, woody, green, spicy, a bit minty—along with other sharp notes of birch, anise, bitter almond, and orris, along with an ensemble of woody notes. It’s definitely a mix unlikely anything I’ve smelled previously, pungent and provocative. And while I generally prefer that it falls into one of the abovementioned categories, it’s nice to have some variety. Still, it lands oddly on my skin to the point that I think I’m not a good fit for it, personally, but I’d still recommend that others try it if they’re sampling the house, as it does add variety the catalogue.
As with the rest of the line, the concentration is high (extrait) and the pricing is $205/135/80 for 57/37/17ml, fair, in my opinion, for rich, indie perfume.
6 out of 10
