Not Genmaicha
I generally love tea scents and I am particularly fond of the scent of real genmaicha tea, so I had high hopes for this. It's a nice perfume, but it doesn't tick the boxes for me. The rice note is not the nutty slightly savory rice found in the actual tea, but is more powdery. It's more floral than citrus (despite the listed notes) and I probably wouldn't have pegged it as a "tea" scent if I was sniffing it blind. It's pleasant, very wearable, and inoffensive. It's just not very "genmaicha."

Sogni lite
I’m hunting for my dream matcha. I thought for years it was Sunday…and the matcha note there is pitch perfect, but the syrupy sweet cardamom-coconut is just too cloying these days and its virtually unwearable. I want something with that matcha umami; but not sweet or buried under ginger etc…

So, this one us virtually impossible to sample but I found a bottle for a reasonable price and blind buy it was. Well, there’s no matcha here on me. Which to be fair it IS called genmaicha—and it does have some genmaicha to it; although I don’t get any of that distinctive popcorn smell at all…it’s more a fresh-leaning nutmeg green tea.

What’s strange is how much it reminds me of Sogni. I really wanted to like Sogni…but there’s something funky in the base notes that although I find interesting I just honestly don’t really like. I can’t quite figure out what it is either, I think it might be whatever is supposed to be the tatami note plus the incense? It has a slightly nutty yet acrid element?

Well, there’s a little of this same acrid-ish base note accord in Genmaicha too, although thankfully not as strong as Sogni. I ultimately sold Sogni before I even opened the FB; although I did recently order another sample to test it side by side with this. I made the right call selling it.

The jury’s still out on this one. I think if I try to pitch it to myself as otaku-tatami-mat accord I might keep it…but it definitely isn’t the matcha I’m looking for.

Fantastic longevity, but the scent notes aren’t ones that align with my preferences. It’s clean and fresh though!
