As Gay As A First Kiss
Poppies are bright red paper flowers that grow spontaneously and wildly among the wheat, meadows, and fields in the wildness. Between spring and summer, when the grain takes on a golden colour, hence the name golden fields, the poppy flowers peep out and sprout higher than the ears of wheat, fluttering with their vibrant red with every breath of wind. The countryside is literally ablaze with wild red poppies. The red ones are widespread in Italy, but there is also a rarer yellow or light orange variety. Do you know them? Have you had the opportunity to pick them up and smell them? I know there are regions where red poppies aren’t familiar or even known. Except that, once picked, the flower withers and doesn’t resist even if placed in a glass of water, but the absurd thing is that, to my nose, the flower doesn’t give off any smell. Still, several perfumes on the market state poppy among the notes. Most likely, the essence is obtained from a particular quality or the seeds, like ambrette. And that’s why the poppy isn’t a flower that immediately comes to mind when thinking of floral notes in a fragrance. Still, it has inspired perfumers over the years. Instead, this herbaceous plant is most famous for its one species, the source of the narcotic drug opium.

R U Serious Her is a fresh, spicy, sweet, and slightly powdery fragrance that puts together feminine floral and masculine woody. It explodes with a dense, flowery, sweetish, creamy accord that is anything but light. Something reminiscent of a bunch of freshly picked fleshy white flowers covered with morning dew. Among the opening notes, one immediately perceives what I believe is the smell of poppy flower oil; it has a misty, powdery, soft and clean floral note and is slightly sweet. In addition to poppy, the perfume contains notes of narcotic tuberose and honeyed orange blossom, or white flowers, as Rue Broca calls them. Both well set, their alliance immediately dominates the scene and accompanies me towards the intermediate phase.

The carnal undertones of tuberose take on a sweetish, slightly musky, slightly earthy edge. A semi-sweet patchouli emerges, not heavy and gothic but modern and sophisticated. Musk is a little animal, sensual and exciting as if to reproduce the smell accompanying the most intimate parts of the human body. Without sinning, it’s a delightful smell, nothing sweaty or dirty, far from it. This middle stage lasts longer before the scent enters the final step. Overall, the poppy and tuberose flowers and the patchouli leaves have an excellent earthy quality.

The dry-down still offers a tender muskiness while the patchouli and other blossoms take a back seat. It captures the sensation of resting in a field of reb wildflowers on a warm summer’s late afternoon. Deep woody undertones of vanilla and vetiver provoke the shock appeal of iridescent white. The sweet floral falls off the map, and the earthy side moves in. It’s still earthy and dark, but the sweetness is nice.

Sweet, robust, floral and unisex. As a male, I don’t find R U Serious for Her markedly feminine. It is as gay as a first kiss. This is quite good as an actual perfume on the skin, and it lasts longer than expected, courtesy of the tuberose and musky underground. The EDP will give you above-average performance, long duration, and moderate projection. Seasonally, I’d say it can be worn anytime, outside of the height of summer. Summer nights might be fine if it isn’t too humid, but it might be cloying during the day. Do I like this scent? Yes, absolutely.

I'm basing my feeling on a bottle I've owned since June 2023.
