Around since 1792 for good reason.
4711 Original eau de Cologne is *perfect*. I use it nearly every day as a refreshing 'wake me up' scent for after the morning shower while having coffee and applying various products (cosmetics, etc) before dressing. It works like a charm! I wake up in the elegant, citrus cloud of 4711 and by the time I'm ready to dress and choose my SOTD (scent of the day), 4711 has done its job and fades to either a skin scent or disappears completely.
Perfect!
Cologne, I think, is supposed to be a quickly disappearing fragrance 'pick up'.
If you want more longevity from a cologne, try:
1) soak a cotton ball (or multiple cotton balls) and put them in your shirt and/or trouser pockets.
2) prime your skin with lotion/moisturizer immediately prior to application.
3) be sure to get this on your clothing, in and out, front and back.
Completely unisex, 4711 Original is exemplary of colognes. The fresh, crisp, green, citrus scent is deliciously timeless, concurrently transporting me back in time to its inception and forward into the hopeful future.
A definite 'must have' for this fragrance nerd.

Sun Moon Stars by Karl Lagerfeld: Adieu, mon amour
Karl Lagerfeld's Sun Moon Stars was my signature scent for years, from the year of it's release when I was gifted a generous 3+ ounce bottle that Christmas. I fell immediately in love.
This is a gorgeous fragrance, very complex, long-lasting, undeniably and unashamedly FEMININE (yes, all caps required).
Of course, it's been discontinued, which is a profound tragedy.
I have two full 1.7 ounce bottles and a rare parfum mini that I will use on rare ocassion given it's DC status.
In the meantime, for regular use as a replacement, I wear one of two Elizabeth Taylor fragrances: Diamonds and Sapphires (the fruitier body-double for SMS) or Diamonds and Rubies (the spicier of the two doppleganger scents), both of which are exceedingly attainable and affordable.
C'est la Vie, my beloved Sun Moon Stars, I will always love you.

Wrongly named: should have been "Vile Despair".
I loathe this fragrance with every molecule of my being. It is the putrid scent of concentrated sorrow and despair in a bottle. Smelling this is like being drowned to death by dollar-store liquid laundry soap with a firehose down the throat. It's so disgusting (to MY nose) that it makes me ANGRY.
Worst $5.95+free shipping I have ever spent.
I keep it as a reminder, though: BLIND BUYING IS VERY, VERY BAD.

Joy de Jean Patou: Class in a bottle.
Upon first smelling this fragrance, I knew immediately why Joy is the 2nd best selling parfum of all time (beaten out by one fragrance alone, Chanel No.5). Apparently, I'm not alone in my love of this opulent, blooming elixir.
I detect literally ZERO civet, nothing animalic or even close to it; Joy, at least the Eau de Parfum, is a vibrant, blooming, extremely-clean symphony of jasmine and roses, period.
Perhaps those for whom Joy smells of anything but the 10600 jasmine blooms + 28-dozens of roses have a biochemical issue with Joy; I have that issue myself with other perfumes and can sympathize. Due to it's price, I'd recommend buying a wee sample first if you don't know how your body responds.
For those of us who can wear it, though, Jean Patou's Joy is pure magic!

A Potent, Pretty Powerhouse Fragrance - NOT for the timid or faint of heart.
This powerhouse fragrance will kick your noses' A$$! It's one of those polarizing juices and I'm leaning toward "love". RG is massive. As a lover of beautiful smells and no expert, I'll cautiously speculate that the marigold in this one is the single most noticeable element but, though it stands out, this is still a nicely feminine blend.
I'm fortunate that it works well with my chemistry, though I think my algebra professor has become afraid of me since the day I wore this to class; he's nice enough to not say anything directly but I figured it out and won't wear it back to class for his sake.
I'd say this is the quintessential late 80's power-house woman's fragrance. If you like HUGE scents like Giorgio Beverly Hills (the original, golden one) then you'll probably enjoy RG.
NOT for the uncertain or faint of heart to be sure!
