Age wisdom
You almost all know it. Fragrances that are packed into a drawer, on which is emblazoned with large letters: ALTMODISCH! Gladly expanding described with words like "fallen out of time", "smells like my grandma" or "madamig".
Well, exactly in the drawer I have packed sometime Chanel No. 5 and never got out again. That must probably have been in my early 20s and all that reminded me and probably many others of my generation of the fragrance at the time were old handbags from the flea market, the great aunts at the coffee party and strict French teachers shortly before their retirement.
A lot has happened since then. Horizons have broadened, life experience has (hopefully?) been added, families have been started, people in life have come and gone. And just those who left for good, leaving big gaps, make you painfully feel that age is not a dirty word, but a gift. That old-fashioned handbags, dusty coats and the smells condemned decades ago and put in the so familiar drawer are a journey into the past and a glimpse into the future at the same time.
When parents die, for the first time you are no longer someone's child. One feels - even if already long of age and standing in the middle of life - for the first time completely alone in the world.
And so I began a while ago to open the drawer and carefully look at what I can discover in it today.
No, No.5 is neither Erba Pura nor BR540. He is most beautiful, noble soap in the prelude, which eventually gives way to rose, iris and lily of the valley. And all framed by some green woodiness, which gives the fragrance a grown-up elegance.
I know exactly why I found it old-fashioned at the time. And yet today he is for me anything but that: he smells rather like a home and security. After a world in which everything has its order and a bad exam was one of the biggest disasters you could imagine.
Today, when I sometimes read "This smells like my grandma," I often think to myself, "Someday you'll wish you could have bottled this scent, this feeling!".
But I also know how I was and how it is meant. So I smile - and since today I have a bottle of No.5. To get me back this feeling for a short moment.

Tacky? No! Woodsy-warm!
Maybe my sense of smell is crazy, but I smell something completely different here than "sticky sweetness" or "cuddly warmth".
Normally I give rose scents a wide berth - many I find simply too madamy for me. Vanilla is not my cup of tea either, I always associate it with food and not with body odor.
I would never have even considered this fragrance here, just the description "flowery-sweet" combined with the name Roses Vanilla actually unites all my No-Gos.
Well, if I hadn't walked through the Alsterhaus some time ago and suddenly got stuck in the middle of the corridor by a smell. Sure, an exact demarcation was not really definable, but I described to the saleswoman what I suspected to smell: Oriental sweetness, yet slightly citric, somehow a bit ISO Super-E heavy with lots of spice and wood, wood, wood!
Well, the lady led me unerringly to the Mancera shelf, grabbed a bottle and sprayed the test strip. Since I was in a hurry, I sprayed my neck/shawl directly with it, grabbed the test strip and disappeared.
When I saw what was handwritten down there, I thought it was a mistake at first, but later I had to realize that rose and vanilla cannot be denied. However: completely different from what I know from other fragrances that combine rose and vanilla
This scent is not a bit sugar sweet or cuddly with me. On the contrary, I find it rather woody and smell the cedar clearly, which makes the combination of vanilla and rose stay on the carpet just right and doesn't let it slide into the puffiness.
I caught myself sticking my nose into the scarf over and over again, and the next day I smelled the coat and scarf in the hallway from time to time. Funnily enough the scent reminds me very much of Molecule 01, which came to my mind again and again.
Perhaps ISO E's odour blindness is the solution to the mystery of why many cannot perceive the fresh, woody impact of Rose's vanilla and therefore describe it as sticky sweet.
I can't confirm that at all and find it very sensual in an adult way and at the same time suitable for everyday life.
The durability is excellent and it has potential to become my favourite. Hopefully I just don't bother too many ISO-E blinds in my environment with it.
