Oh no, not another aoud !
SOTN Trayee is quite disappointing.. I had been looking forward to testing one of the samples of a newer house by Neela Vermeire , but their first scent (a spicy oriental that were allocated mostly to January), reeks of aoud.
In spite of the other ingredients, aoud is about the only note I'm noticing.
Guys I'm so over it.. it is 2013. Get out of here alright.. maybe I'll try straight oud one day but from what I read, 99% of fragrance with aoud is synthetic oud and not as interesting as the real aoud is. Somehow it almost feels as if I am in the midst of the well known story of the emperor w/o clothes on.

Must confess the drydown does get more interesting... it had better be! I'd not be any happier than when I have to swallow my words :)

OK, ok, Trayee does really improve lots on the drydown.. quite the complex fragrance. Still... a pity aoud is so prominent: is it only MY skin or does everyone have a similar experience with aoud? Writing aoud because oud seems weird for a Dutch person (oud = old)

And the winner is... (nope, not this one)
As I am testing 12 urn samples of Caron one by one and being quite disappointed by the 3 earliest samples (N'Aimez que moi (1916), Tabac Blond (1919), Narcisse Blanc (1923)), I was relieved to find the first agreeable one: Acaciosa (1924) and was told to just wait until testing Farnesiana (1947).

So expectations were quite high when today was 'the day' .
Too bad the scent proves to be just a so-so one. It is quite OK, but it is hard to discern between the flower notes as I had expected them to be. The flowers don't smell fresh, but as if they are wilted. It is as if the juice has aged too much, notes that blend together into something I can't discern anymore, which was typical of the first few scents that were tested.

A confusing factor was having at least 20 samples lying around on my desk, creating a mixture of scents. For a moment I thought to smell a perennial favourite fragrance Zwitsal (baby soap/oil, but now also edc) but no. Looking up accords clears up it is supposedly a powdery scent too.
Anyhow, sofar Acaciosa is the clear winner when it comes to which of the urns I prefer with Alpona coming close as a 2nd.

Still 4 Carons to go! (3 urns + Yatagan)

Freshly showered skin
Today I got a small split of Musc Tonkin and curiosity killed the desire to wait till April when it was scheduled to be worn (season-wise).
Wearing it myself now confirmed my thoughts: it smells after a 'Mensch' (human being). I'd thought it would be animalic, just like the famous Musc Koublai Khan but no, it is a freshly showered clean smelling of flowery showergel human being, with more and more skin scent as it develops.

Thyme and citrus in spring
Alpona is a citrusy-thyme scent that is quite suited for late spring I'd say.
This is truly a chypre I *am* enjoying very much. NOT so much in your face as many oakmoss-monsters but way more subtle, yet quite noticeable.
The reason for enjoying it so much are probably the citrus notes that make Alpona a lot easier to wear!

Drunk Russian sailor
Wearing Ambre Russe is like sitting next to a drunk but very attractive Russian sailor in a nice and comfortable pub. The only thing I don't really get is why he's got spiced honey smeared all over his body! :)
Quite the intoxicating smell: it is only the 2nd time wearing Ambre Russe since buying the entire sample pack in June last year. At the time it made a big enough impact to make me all excited at the prospect of wearing it again some day in January. As if I was meeting with an old friend.
Yesterday (Jan 9) was the day to which I had pinpointed it a while ago, based on accords (smoky, animalic, warm spicy) and notes (rum, amber, vodka, incense, honey, coriander) that were assigned seasons. If it had not been un-seasonally warm for January, the perfect scent for icy cold days to stay warm.
Very typically, Ambre Russe is a scent that allows you to travel to faraway places, yet it stays wearable, even on semi-formal occasions. Suitable for both men and women, though I can see some women may shy away from smelling too boozy.
