Déjà-vu
A very nice lady introduced me to Tauer perfumes. After falling head over heels for Lys du Désert, I had high expectations.
On first spritz, I was a little taken aback by the strong spices, very raw, as if I were standing in my kitchen. The top is strong, sharp, masculine. I wasn't sure this was something for me. Towards the middle I get some woody notes, vetiver and cedar, and the whole vibe reminded me of something by Serge Lutens, maybe Vetiver? It's hard to pin down exactly which one. The base gets softer and sweeter, powdery, dry (I love dry scents) with amber, woods and I think I can even smell some tobacco.
L'air du désert marocain doesn't project much, and longevity wasn't all that great on me either, maybe 3-4 hours. I sprayed it 3 times at 1-2 hours interval, and this seems to give the best results, adding it layer by layer. I also found that even after I had gone to the drydown, at times a faint citrus note would pop up. Quite interesting, and even though I usually wrinkle my nose at citrus, this wasn't bothering me.
As a whole, I would say this is a very good perfume, definitely unisex, and if it were gifted to me, I will gladly wear it. But the whole experience to me was a déjà-vu of a Serge Lutens composition, and since I already have so many SL perfumes, I will probably not buy L'air du désert marocain. I'll save up for Lys du désert, which is like nothing I have ever smelled and has that dry Tauerade that I fell in love with.

What went wrong?
I soooo wanted to like this.
After reading several reviews and based on the notes, this looked like a total winner to me. Vanilla, amber, musk, what could go wrong? Right?
Well, a lot actually. There must be many more notes in this composition that aren't mentioned and one or more of these just don't work for me.
Right after spraying, I gagged. The first note is awful. It smells like bread dough. Not lovely warm baked bread, but bread dough with yeast that is rising under a wet cloth. Those who have baked bread will know what I mean, my mom used to bake bread for many years, and I remember that yeast smell. It's not a pleasant one.
Thankfully that gagging smell in this perfume lasts for just a moment. After that, the whole experience is pretty linear. I can detect something sweet, not exactly vanilla, not amber, I don't know what, probably just plain white sugar. I didn't get any powder from the musk either. IMO, i.e., to my nose, it smells more like jam, very sweet fruity jam.
I tried to like it, I tried to force myself to like it, but after 2 times I had to give up. I detect something synthetic, cloying, annoying, sweet but not pleasantly sweet. I'm so sad this didn't work for me.
For a good amber fix, I'll stick to Ambre Sultan (SL) or Ambre Extreme (AP).

The Battle of the Flowers
The show opens with Tuberose in the blue corner. She stands first in the ring, allowing me to enjoy her true beauty. I bask in her full splendour, the heavy, creamy scent, and I am carried away to tropical places, filled with sunshine and blue skies, the air sweet with the aroma of white flowers. This glorious bliss lasts for a good 5 to 10 minutes. I have to admit, I am a fan. But then Gardenia makes her entrance, taking her spot in the red corner. She jumps into the ring with a blast; she is strong, aggressive, sharp, bitter even, demanding all the attention. And she gets all the attention, her presence commands all eyes on her, making me forget that Tuberose was the queen of the show until just a moment ago. This makes me realize that I am not a big fan of Gardenia. I like her when she is shy, subtle, remains in the background where she doesn't stand out and blends harmoniously with the group. It is at this point that I think that I don't want to be a witness to something this ugly, so I decide to leave the stage (my arm) and let those two ladies fight it out between themselves, behind closed doors (under my sleeve). Yes, I am a coward, I flee the scene.
After a few hours, curiosity gets a hold of me, I want to know the results. Slowly I open the doors, afraid of the carnage I might encounter. It is quiet inside, and I am thrilled to find my lovely Tuberose still standing. She is weakened, but still there, dominating Gardenia, who probably used all her energy in her powerful entrance and ended up being trampled on all over.
I was rooting for Tuberose, and she won the battle, so it's all good in the end, but I am not sure that I want to see such a violent fight again. I probably won't watch the re-broadcast.
