A Flawed Masterpiece
Ever since I dived into the rabbit hole of fragrances a year and a half ago, there is one man’s fragrance that is consistent in conversations.

If you are reading this, you heard about Creed Aventus as well.

After hearing from nearly everyone about how amazing Aventus smells, I bought a decant from one of my college acquaintances after he bought the bottle from Nordstrom. It was time to smell and test it for myself.

----

The first thought that comes to mind after smelling the various layers of Aventus is how amazing it smells! It reminds me of a man with valid confidence. Perhaps the man possesses conceit or arrogance to a point that it is a character flaw. However, the bravado is legitimate. The man can back up his words.

As for the scent itself, Aventus opens with a burst of fruity freshness that has a little edge to it with pineapple, blackcurrant, and bergamot.

The scent then morphs into a smooth, smoky heart note that blends patchouli, birch, and juniper with a hint of floral jasmine that gives it some sophistication.

The base notes of ambergris and vanilla keep the fragrance smooth, slightly sweet, and wearable throughout the fragrance.

The smoky heart note makes Aventus decisively masculine, similar in a way to classic men's scents. However, the light sweetness in the top and base notes gives the fragrance a modern touch.

----

The performance of Aventus is my biggest issue. To say that I am disappointed is an understatement.

On a positive note, I have zero problems with the sillage and projection. It has an above-average range. It will not scream your arrival as you enter a room. However, most people should notice the sillage trail as you walk by them.

Then there is the longevity. Aventus is an Eau de Parfum, so I have higher expectations. However, it only lasted five hours on my skin.

That is notable because fragrances last longer on me. I can say that there are Spring/Summer Eau de Toilettes that possess better longevity.

It is enough to get through an important event (e.g., a conference with multiple bosses, an anniversary dinner, etc.), but if someone seeks an Eau de Parfum that will survive an entire day without reapplying, Aventus will disappoint.

(I will note that my connection had a recent batch, and many people state that older batches have better longevity, or the bottle may have to sit for a while. I may have to change my review to reflect this.)

----

In terms of social usage, Aventus shines with glorious fanfare with the versatility it brings. Whether it is an everyday fragrance or one for big life events, such as a marriage proposal, Aventus shines like a supernova—except the star gets stronger!

If someone wants to wear Aventus to the gym, it is soft enough that it will not nauseate everyone within their vicinity. I rarely recommend fragrances for the gym, but Aventus absolutely can work there.

If someone wants to wear the fragrance for relaxation or errands, Aventus is good for that as well, whether someone wants to walk the streets of a major city to clear their mind or wind down the day reading a book before going to sleep.

I wouldn't expect a teenager to wear this fragrance (assuming they can afford it), as Aventus possesses a mature vibe. However, whether someone is a young adult entering the business world, or someone older who wants to try something new, Aventus works.

That said, Aventus is absolutely at top form in the office, and on a date night. The sillage is perfect for people to wonder where the amazing smell is coming from. This is something a person will want to wear for a big date night or an important board meeting.

----

Creed Aventus deserves the hype it gets in the fragrance community, and I consider it a modern masterpiece, if not a generational fragrance. The smell is amazing and is one of the most versatile fragrances out there.

While Aventus is a masterpiece, it is not flawless. A 50 ml bottle easily costs over USD 200.00 (and possibly over USD 300.00, depending on where a person purchases it). For anyone seeking a fragrance with high performance, Aventus is not worth the price because of questionable longevity between batches.

However, if someone has the wealth to use it as a daily or signature scent, or if anyone wants to splurge for a fragrance to use during special events and occasions, Aventus will not disappoint, because the scent is that amazing!

A Smoother Voyage
I visited a Macy’s in New York City with a friend recently and was looking at fragrances and talking about some familiar ones to consider.

Because of the employees' aggressive sales tactics, I purchased nothing. However, the sales team sprayed three fragrance samples that piqued my interest.

Bottled Marine, the latest fragrance (at the time of this review) in the Hugo Boss Bottled line, is the first of the three fragrances.

----

The Opening is apple and mint, which is identical to Nautica Voyage.

The mid notes are where things divert slightly. The smell of sage is more noticeable than cinnamon. Combined with the patchouli and cashmere wood base note, the fragrance is smooth, fresh, and sweet for the entire duration of the scent.

Overall, the fragrance is a soft and masculine touch. However, more notable is the significant relaxation effect. Mint, sage, patchouli, and cashmere wood all have stress or anxiety-reducing effects.

----

Hugo Boss Bottled Marine has above-average performance for an eau de toilette.

The sillage and projection are average. This will not break doors open with fanfare to announce a person's presence, but a second person passing by or entering their personal space should notice the fragrance.

The longevity of the fragrance was about eight hours. This is an excellent performance for a warm-weather eau de toilette under normal circumstances, as that will get a person through an entire workday or an evening event without a respray.

----

In terms of social usage, Bottled Marine is a fragrance that is wearable to any person (regardless of age) in most situations without serious scrutiny.

If longevity in cooler weather is a sign, Bottled Marine is a fresh fragrance useable throughout the year. This could allow a person may stand out during the winter months when people switch to spicy or gourmand notes.

Bottled Marine can work as a solid date night fragrance, but there is a proviso for first dates. Using the fragrance may trigger a memory of another man, such as a parent, sibling, or ex-lover. Such memories can lead to a mood shift depending on how the person's date associates the fragrance.

That said, the best situation to use Bottled Marine is during a leisurely moment. Whether you are enjoying the cool waves on a beach, reading a captivating book outside, or getting ready to rest, Bottled Marine enhances those moments thanks to the relaxation notes that are prominent in the fragrance.

For the same reasons as leisure, Bottled Marine can also excel in a demanding office environment.

----

Hugo Boss Bottle Marine is a solid fragrance. It smells pleasant and smooth, and it is typical of many fresh summer fragrances. The relaxation vibe is also undeniable.

However, for anyone looking for a unique summer fragrance, or wants a fragrance that stands out from the crowd, Bottled Marine would be a waste of money.

Even if someone likes the fragrance and does not care about uniqueness, a comparable fragrance is available for less than a third of the price — and that is with Bottled Marine being at a reasonable retail price, which is under $100.00 for a 100 ml bottle.

For these reasons, I can see Bottled Marine going to the discount racks within a year, where it may shine as a hidden gem.

However, if you are looking for a fragrance that has a similar profile to Nautica Voyage, but with better longevity, or simply a fragrance that is a good option for calming down stress and anxiety, Bottled Marine is a worthwhile purchase.

Another Cozy Date Night Fragrance
I bought and tested Guess Seductive Noir for two reasons. First, Guess impressed me with 1981 Los Angeles for men. Second, I heard positive praise for this fragrance as well.

That said, I tested Guess Seductive Noir, and the results were surprising!

Imagine, if you will, a perfume like Paco Rabanne One Million, but subtracts some sweetness.

The result is Guess Seductive Noir for Men.

Similarities aside from the two fragrances, I will review how Seductive Noir stands on its own as a fragrance.

----

This fragrance opens with black pepper and nutmeg, warm spices that are both familiar and exotic. The opening feels synthetic, but that phase dissipates rapidly.

Soon the fragrance transitions into a luscious soft sweetness heart note of apple and lavender. The base note containing tonka bean and sandalwood enhances the sweet profile while maintaining its calmness.

The spiciness and sweetness can make the fragrance lean more towards unisex, but the sandalwood in the base note gives the fragrance a masculine touch.

----

I like the bottle's modern aesthetic and the black matte finish. Dark bottles help protect the fragrance from light exposure to keep freshness.

That said, I dislike the matte gold at the top underneath the cap, as that part looks tacky. Also, the cap is not a solid fit. Yet, these are minor complaints about a fragrance at an affordable price point.

----

Guess Seductive Noir’s performance is typical for an eau de toilette.

Sillage and projection are average. This will not announce a person’s presence while entering a room, but a second person passing by or entering their personal space should notice the fragrance.

Longevity for the fragrance is roughly six hours, which is fine for most events. If someone wants the fragrance to percolate throughout the day, carry the fragrance to respray.

----

In terms of social usage, Seductive Noir is useable as an office or as a typical daily scent, as the sweetness is not cloying. In addition, seductive Noir is a decent leisure fragrance to relax before bedtime.

It is useable year-round, but the best time of year is in the cooler months of autumn and winter, where sweet smells shine the best. The fragrance is useable in warm weather, but spray lightly to avoid potentially overwhelming other people.

An older gentleman may shy away from Seductive Noir because of the sweetness, but this fragrance is more mature, and a decent entry point if one will experiment.

This is not a workout fragrance. Sugar and spice and everything nice seldom blends well with running, dancing, and weightlifting. The result is a not-so-pleasant combination of sweetness and funk.

With a name like Seductive Noir, it surprises no one that this fragrance shines on a date night, as sweet smells are enticing and lure people closer.

However, I mentioned Seductive Noir has a familiar scent profile. That is a potential psychological trigger on a first date, which can include anything from good times with friends or siblings (which while usually positive, can also end with "You remind me of my sibling/friend."), or horrible times with an atrocious ex.

----

Guess Seductive Noir for Men is an overall good fragrance. Sweet aromas are popular for a reason; the intensity and type vary, but the combination smells pleasant to most people.

If someone is looking for a unique fragrance to blend stand out from the crowd, Guess Seductive Noir is too trendy and will become a massive disappointment.

However, if someone seeks a fragrance that is lightly sweet, easy to wear, and easily affordable, Guess Seductive Noir may be a good choice.

Fresh Out the Shower
I shopped at Burlington this weekend as part of my job with assisting people with developmental disabilities. I noticed the fragrance rack. Because of my growing interest in affordable fragrances, I purchased two caught my attention.

Calvin Klein’s Be (CK Be) is the first of the two fragrances.

Admittedly, it's a fragrance that comes with a mixture of positives aspects and notable critiques.

----

The best way to describe CK Be is “Fresh out the shower clean.” It doesn't take me back to the teen years of the 1990s when Calvin Klein was notably everywhere. However, it reminds me of a soap’s fragrance lingering in the air as I get a towel to dry myself after a shower.

With top notes of mint and juniper, you will feel refreshed as the mid notes of spices and peach add warmth and depth. The base notes seem like myrrh and sandalwood, and they extend the freshness until the fragrance fades away.

While some scents I reviewed to this point could be unisex, CK Be is the first fragrance that I can say is unisex without an obvious lean towards masculinity or femininity.

----

In terms of the bottle, I have mixed feelings.

On the positive side, I love dark bottles; the fragrance withstands light, allowing the scent to stay fresher for a longer time.

However, at least for the 100 ml, only the cap or atomizer goes on the bottle. Switching between the two makes air exposure more likely and reduces the lifespan of the scent.

----

The performance for CK Be is quite underwhelming, even for an eau de toilette.

Sillage and projection are minimal. People who want to announce their presence or turn heads will frown in disappointment. However, one can appreciate smelling clean and fresh for themselves or for individuals within their proximity.

However, longevity is a bigger concern. Fresh fragrances usually lack stamina, and CK Be lasted for four hours. Bringing the bottle or a travel spray is required if you want to wear the scent throughout the day.

----

CK Be is decent to use in active leisure, or as a daily fragrance, as the fresh scent is invigorating and energetic.

That said, CK Be is not a noteworthy evening or date night fragrance. The scent vanishes before the night ends. For similar performance reasons, it fails as a scent during the winter or in a colder environment.

Likewise, one should not expect compliments for smelling clean. It is reminiscent of taking care of one’s hygiene—that is expected out of everyone and is not extraordinary.

There is another side to the coin. CK Be excels in the office because of the soft sillage. No one will find the scent offensive or overwhelming. Spritz in the afternoon for a quick refresh.

In addition, CK Be is a rare fragrance I offer top recommendations for workouts. It will offend no one else during a workout, and you smell fresh throughout it, even if sweaty in multiple places.

----

CK Be is not terrible; one cannot underestimate having a clean and invigorating fragrance. However, the problem is CK Be can come across as ordinary and bland. In some ways, it makes the scent underrated.

With that in mind, anyone seeking a unique fragrance for a date or an evening out, or a fragrance that stands out and garners attention from others, would waste money purchasing CK Be, even at an affordable price point.

However, if someone is looking for an office-safe fragrance, the rare usable gym fragrance, or just wants to smell fresh and liven up for a moment, that person will get serious mileage out of CK Be.

A Mistake that Turned into Positive Vibes
One of the initial fragrances I purchased during the pandemic was Guerlain’s L’Homme Ideal EDT.

The problem is, I meant to get the EDP version.

Rather than making a return, I tried out the EDT. I can see why it has received so much praise—and many flankers—after wearing a third of the bottle over a year.

----

Wearing L’Homme Ideal feels like an amazing date with a positive atmosphere. Your date thinks your jokes are hilarious. The food is amazing, and the weather fits the mood. The good vibes are unbreakable.

Ideal opens with orange blossoms and citric notes. Within minutes, they blend with the almond and tonka bean middle notes to make a silky sweet fragrance.

In the base notes, leather, cedar, and vetiver combine with everything to create a sensual, and soothing scent.

Anyone can use the fragrance with confidence, as L’Homme Ideal is reminiscent of a unisex fragrance. It should surprise no one because the perfumer is Thierry Wasser. He worked on exemplary fragrances with blurred gender lines such as Dior Addict and Jil Sander Absolute Man.

----

In terms of performance, L’Homme Ideal hits above its weight class as an EdT.

The fragrance can turn heads if they are within six feet of the wearer. That said, do not expect the scent to scream your presence as you enter a bar or a large room.

Also, the fragrance lasts for about eight hours. If you plan to attend a long event, or you expect a long evening out with a lady, L’Homme Ideal is up to the task.

----

L’Homme Ideal is an adaptable scent. The fragrance works well for daily usage, or one used for leisure in downtime to relax. Ideal is also a solid evening scent to end the day before sleeping. I can also envision anyone using the fragrance to help reduce stress in the workplace. However, because of the projection, one needs to be cautious if a fragrance policy exists.

L’Homme Ideal works fine in any season but will be most effective in the cooler months of the year or in a colder climate.

On the negative end, the serene vibe of the scent clashes with a workout environment. Also, this is not a scent for older gentlemen who prefer fresh fragrances. However, Ideal can work for gentlemen who are experimenting with sweeter fragrances.

On a date night, L’Homme Ideal hits all the targets. The fragrance can project across a dining table and is welcoming for individuals during a dance, a hug, or whatever they desire.

----

L’Homme Ideal EDT is a great fragrance, and on my end, is a lucky mistake.

Those looking for a fragrance that is not sweet, or that offers a unique alternative to current trends in fragrance, may become disappointed.

However, L’Homme Ideal is a fragrance worthy of attention if you fit into certain categories. Consider testing or buying it if you want a versatile date night fragrance or just a good fragrance at a reasonable price point.
