just as suddenly the lime in gone *POOF* the juniper fizzles, and the spices of pink pepper and *sniff sniff* UGH... wtf is that? cinnamon? vanilla? something really sweet and syrupy takes over!! NOOOOO!

i got my first bottle of Obsession the year it premiered in 1985 in san francisco. my rich lesbian aunt, whom i had been visiting, brought me into Neiman-Marcus and bought it for me for my 13th birthday. i used to keep it in its original box and worshiped it as if it were a deity. it was my introduction into the world of fragrance and will always remind me of the excess and extravagance of the 80s. to this day, when i smell it's heady amber fumes i am hearkened back to the days of ENORMOUS shoulder pads, gravity-defying hair, popped collars, Dynasty-esque wealth, that weird Obsession commercial (!!!) and Duran Duran, of course. truly a classic and forever a memory.

dark, exotic, smooth vanilla bean that appeals to those of us who usually loathe the scent of vanilla as too common. this vanilla? slaps your ass and makes you her bitch. really no idea why...must be its pairing with orchid and sandalwood that gives it its edge. tainted love indeed! MEOW!

why oh WHY have the gods damned my chemistry with this one!? every year i try and try again to be accepted by this cocktail of odd juice and year after year it rejects me. *SOB* i've gone as far as to walk around the department store for hours at a time, cellophane sealed box clutched in hand, credit card at the ready... patiently *sniff sniffing* my wrists in intervals and BLECH... it just WON'T LOVE ME. why elixir??? what have i ever done to you but want your odd embrace! i dejectedly return the box and hope that next year will be the year we fall in love.
