Unreal
I had a listerine bottle version of Heritage that I, due to a lapse of reason, ended up selling. Fast forward a couple of years and I found myself wanting to give the scent a new shot. It was almost as if I knew that I needed to have it back in the collection. Heritage’s woody-spicy mix of patchouli, sandalwood, amber and spices was, after all, maybe not as cloying as I had reasoned earlier.

Long story short, I ended up stumbling over a vintage 50 ml goldcap version for dirt cheap, bought the bottle the same day and sprayed onto my arm first thing. A cavalcade of booze, juniper, slight citrus/lemon and spice hit my nose like a freight train. This quickly subsided into a smell that I would call the epitome of woody-spicy. Coriander and pepper backed by patchouli and a slowly evolving element of woody sweetness. This is where I realized that either my bottle is a bit off or modern versions of the scent have undergone a reformulation. I didn’t remember this type of a dusty spice cocktail from my listerine bottle. Two hours later I caught a whiff of a most realistic and vivid combination of earthy patchouli, lovely sandalwood and something slightly sweet, possibly amber or tonka, suspended in a bright and subtle envelope of oakmoss. It was the same drydown that I recalled from the listerine version, but way more refined and realistic. Perfection!

Whilst a refined scent, it’s not dated or old school in my view. If a niche house launched this today it would likely turn into a success. Masterpiece, in my view.

Nice but borderline overrated
Powdery, a bit one dimensional, not too overbearing, sweet but light enough for cool spring days and cool summer nights. Pleasant. I guess there are faint hints at tea and leather, but these are in the flanks and not center stage. They bring some structure. There’s nothing really wrong with this fragrance. I can sense the elegance in it and, in a way, understand why it is being lauded. With that said, I still find it overrated. It’s not a masterpiece as at it lacks that type of complexity and there’s also something synthetic about MIP. Get it if you must, but fear not missing out on something special. And don’t overpay. MIP was basically a cheapie that you could buy for 20$ - well worth that amount. The bottle does make it a bit special, got to admit.

Oddbird
A little fruity, a little woody, a little herbal, a little soft/sweet spicy. A little fresh? An oddbird for sure. And this is a compliment!

I hate it that designers don’t make ’em like this any more. Daring. Artful. Slightly pushing the envelope. I sprayed Dune this morning and the first thought that arrived was ”proto Aventus”. It’s not Aventus, obviously, but I find a hint of a resemblence in the way freshness mingles with woodsy and herbal elements in Dune.

I guess it’s the fig elements that largely are responsible for the uniqueness of Dune. I really don’t get the supposed ”smell of a beach dune” reference but this might be just me and my limited olfactory impressions of beach dunes. I wear this on warm days when, coincidentally, going to a beach.

Will grow hair wherever you spray it
Off the bat, this is one of those scents that you need to be able to carry. If not, you’ll come across as the person who smells funny. I wasn’t able pull this one off, I need to admit.

In many ways, in this day and age Havana is like a clown’s suit. You’ll wear it for a masquerade but would not be caught dead going to work in an outfit like that. I’d wear this to a poker night as an attempt to distract other players. The scent to me is basically a few flavours of tobacco (green leaves and ash) with booze and slight fruity notes. Clean yet dirty at the same time, resembling the smell of ripe fruits in an ashtray with a half smoked cigar and it’s ashes. Manly as f*#k. I understand why someone might think this represents Cuba but I also don’t as, surely, there is more to that island than booze, cigars and outrageously manly men. I suppose it’s a tourist brochure thing,in the case of Havana.

This does not mean that the fragrance is of poor quality, on the contrary, rather. The scent profile, however, appears to me as a curiosity in that it’s so heavily anchored to a certain theme/image, i.e. that of an idealization ”Cuba”. If nothing else, then Havana evokes images and associations and for this I want to laude the scent!

Cinnamon bubble gum bomb
Very heavy on the cinnamon with some pepperiness and maybe (as it’s not a note that jumps out in this iteration) some tobacco. I’ve not had the chance to test older formulations but I can say the current one leans on the side of synthetic. The cinnamon in Spicebomb reminds me of Big Red cinnamon bubble gum. It’s not bad as such but my expectation was that of a warm spicy Declaration with tobacco and that’s not what I got. Pass.
