Let's talk musk - any suggestions?

Let's talk about musk.

What do you like and hate about musk? Which ones do you like? love? detest? What does a cute little stinky musk deer have in common with Sarah Jessica Parker? Then you've come to the right place.

Let's discuss it here!

As for my personal opinion. I'm looking around for a nice musk under € 45,- , preferably 90% clean, 10% dirty. Any suggestions?

While I like and respect "Musc Ravageur" and "Kouros", I have to admit that I cannot wear them. Almost never. The maximum of funk I can wear is the one from "For Him Musc Collection". I also like clean musks like "Lovely" and the bodyshop's White Musk (Men). I think "Musk by Alyssa Ashley" has a nice balance of clean & dirty, but it smells a bit dated to me.

So: Please share your musky opinions and feel free to recommend something to me Smile

This is so exciting. I am on a musk binge. Okay, you need to order a Musc Nomade body cream from S/Net and layer it with Kiehls, as the matching perfume is too expensive. The body cream, however, is 60% off full price and is so utterly divine I have used it lavishly

They are too few musk perfumes on the market today... Sad

Here in Australia (and New Zealand too, Omni?) musk is used to flavor sweets such as fondant (musk sticks) and Life Savers. I was astounded to learn that this is a pretty restricted market and musk flavoured Life Savers are unknown outside of Oz and NZ.
Therefore, I associate the word musk with the smell of pink candy - sweet, powdery, a little soapy even. Not sure I'd recognise a true animal musk smell in a perfume, though I own a few that are considered 'skanky' e.g. Paco Rabanne La Nuit (is musk responsible for that dirty vibe, the 'powdered outhouse' type of note?)

Musk lollies, aka smokers were so popular in my childhood and then in my teens Houbigant musk was the 'it' fragrance. Sweet white musks in the market stalls were brought in from the East. Today Etro musk, NR musk, and Annick Goutal's Musc Nomade seem beautiful to me. I believe the NR musk oil is available again at Bloomingdales. This is regarded as creamy and alluring but it is based on Egyptian Musk favoured by Carolyn Kennedy RIP.

And to follow on the musk oil has a limited shelf life and must be used quickly

Do these remind you of musk lollies though Omni?

No, can't go that far Triff, can't take it to the candy level, I wracked my brains and thought about those candy cigarettes and thought that there may have been something musky to those. I guess its like the difference between vegetal iris and orris root butter, the word is the same but the experience is different.

Don't want to harp on but Musc Nomade is highly regarded by Elena of Perfume Shrine, Ida Meister (olfactory specialist to the point of ESP) and Katie Puckrik. I only discovered this after I fell in love with the fragrance but you can see the comments on the perfume shrine link above

Musk can be nearly everything. While the chemical structure of musky ingredients seems to be similar, the fragrance is not.

I am not so fond of dominating white musk notes with their powdery and creamy facets. I'd go for a more animalic musk style.

If it has to be a cheaper musk fragrance, I'd recommend ordering some Musc Oil by Harry Lehmann

A little surprising thought about musk.... I have Houbigant Musk vintage and it is as good as the day it was bought.

That's so gorgeous, it was my first musk, i was born in the mid fifties so I remember it well as being the best. I'm not surprised it has kept beautifully. The information I have gleaned is that NR Musk Oil contains silicone which goes off quite quickly. As I don't have any this is not likely to worry me but I believe it has been reissued as an oil and has been sold in 2014.

Love Musks!
Like wine, it keeps me awake at night worrying that I will never be able to try them all before I die!

My holy grail musk, so far is Santa Maria Novella Muschio followed closely by Musc Bleu by IL Profvumo. These two will always stay in my collection.

I have a range from the Jovan White Musk/Body Shop classic clean White Musk to Le Labo Musc 25 which is clean and weirdly like a certain male bodily fluid at the same time, yet oddly wearable and business appropriate.

I also love my Bruno Acampora Eau de Musc- which last 24 hours and goes from a vintage floral musk to a super clean soapy light musk after several hours- it actually gets cleaner over time (?). I have a sample of Mona di Orio D'Or Musc- which I was scared to try- I was expecting super dirty and skanky and it turns out to be shockingly soft and J&J Baby powdery almost like a loukhoum scent. Scary and brilliant musks that I have tried are both by Nasomato- Black Afghano (or as I call it 'Khal Drogo'/'the Wrath of Khan' musk) and Silver Musk- which to me starts of light and fresh and becomes a vegetal galaxolide wave and then becomes a spicy cardamom tigress lasting 12 hours easily.Does anyone want to comment on Royal Muska by M. Micallef or Al-Rehab or Montale Musks? I smelled all of the Montale line in one day so I can't really remember any thing but I know there are a lot of them!

Khal Drogo as Black Afgano? Very Happy that is great!

I dislike musk. It is somehow boring to my nose, I feel it in the base of almost every cheap perfumes. But there are some exceptions. The best musk ever in my opinion is "Cherry Musk". Wonderful, fruitty, smooth, clear. The second is Musk by Etro in my opinion (with the wonderful gaiac), rather unisex.

Lately I tested a very interesting metallic-salty musk, "Salvia Sclarea" (Tom Daxon).
