SOAP HOMECOMING 4 - FROM SOAP TO PERFUME
did have good intentions in setting out to duplicate that magic soap of 30+ years ago. A Copra-olive (olive and coconut), I scented it with Jasmine, Lavender and Sandalwood — gorgeous extracts not affordably available today. I have a very old Jasmine Sambac though, from Bulk Apothecary whose offerings today aren't always what they once were. I have a very new Jasmine Grandiflorum absolute...

Soap Homecoming 3 - Discoveries
Natural Products is actually lavendar and so forth. I have a labdanum absolute from White Lotus Aromatics to make you fall to your knees. Problem solved. So now I'm ready to make my Homage Attar facsimile Castile. I doubled the scent formula given in Soap Homecoming 2. However, one batch has my old lovely rose oil and the other batch has a possibly natural Taif rose oil I had to send off to a foreign...

The Winds of Winter
Do you go for something crisp to reflect the winter chill, or a whiff that’s warm and reminiscent of cozy nights by the fire? #AzzaroCollection #JohnVarvatosCollection #Creed #UngaroOud #BentleyIntense #ChanelPourMonsieurFor the past few years, the trend in the best cologne for men has been big, bold smells. Think rich musks, velvety ouds, and heavy-as-hell leathers. Things that, when you walk into a room,...

Etat Libre d’Orange “La Fin du Monde” - end of the world is close...
by book ”The End of the World Filmed by the Angel of Notre-Dame” Bisch was the first one that came to his mind. La Fin du Monde was the first solo and fully commercial composition made by Quentin. With this smell he proved his undeniable talent. I will say more – he got off to a very good start – as it was a very strong debut!Quentin BischThe start-off...

Amouage “Journey Man”
dry and woody note of cypriol. Everything intensified by tonka, musk and ambrox. During the last stage Journey Man resembles some other perfume which I reviewed earlier but unfortunately I cannot recall the name now. Anyway, the smell gets masculine, elegant and intriguing. It is really good. With every next try I come to a conclusion that the tobacco note is the dark horse of the whole composition....

Soap Homecoming 2
Copra-olive soap into bars yesterday. When our HVAC maintenance man, unasked, cleaned our gutters of hurricane detritus, I gave him a big bar for his wife. The remainder yielded fifteen 1.5" x 2" x 3" bars and a few odd ones—not overly beautiful to the eye, but oh the touch. My magic batch of old had nothing on this.Imagine copious sudsy bubbles, so rich they are almost mucilaginous, that clean the skin and leave...

Chanel Les Exclusifs „Coromandel”
that I really like or maybe it is just that perfect. The scent evolves slowly, over time the dominant patchouli note retreats, making space for amber note (but what kind of a note!). The patchouli note can still be smelled somewhere in the background though. Not much is happening here but that is good as what we have is absolutely sensational. Without any doubts this is the most beautiful...

Soap Homecoming Redux
to receive the soap. Here's the magic scent material poured into the traced soap before mixing in.And here's the box, ready to close, be wrapped in insulation and allowed to sit for 24 hours, after which I'll take out the soap so it can age for 2-4 weeks in the air. I'll post a pic. Did the scent hold its own and survive incorporation? We shall see. Fingers crossed Not sure how I'll live for four weeks, waiting......

The Swedish collection trilogy from ZARA
to Sweden's region, mountain, and national park respectively. All of the three scents belong to the woody family, as clearly depicted by the woody-like boxes and caps, though each one is built around a main accord of earthy vetiver, sweet tonka, or animal leather note.Since ZARA often makes its good fragrances very similar to famous brands, my gut feeling is that this time we will get a clone...

The Way It Makes You FEEL (signature scent)
out from my tiny BOSE and inside the red canvas, metal-framed pet kennel next to me is the tiniest, frailest kitten I've ever seen; "Crusty", so named from the mucous in his eyes, went to the doctor yesterday (the day we found him) and his general prognosis for having a life, a decent one, is good. When I wear JOY, the world is transformed into an exponentially better place to be overall....

And I'm Never Going Back to My Old School Said Steely Dan
1970s and 1980s did not end in my teen years. I may have left my shellacked bangs behind in 1988-1989 but the previous two decades were strong with me when it came to my perfumes. My tastes have changed over the years as I've mentioned ad nauseum in my distaste for most oakmoss. But I still hold a soft spot for those listed above. Some of them have never left my collection,...
