Basenotes/Parfumo Comparison
by Sweetgrass | Parfumo Community
...I am not that familiar with the functions on Basenotes (other than I find their directory hard to use and sorely lacking) but one thing really irks me: reviews have to approved by an admin before they are published. Is this is a general thing or something they do to control new members for spam accounts? Does anybody on here know? Because that hampers news users' participation, and seeing as I already participate in two perfume communities, I can't be arsed to jump through hoops like that.EDIT, never mind — apparently you have to pay for your reviews to go through instantly. I knew there was a reason why that site seemed a bit off to me.

Good-smelling cheapies are hard to find
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...Cruella:I don't think Elizabeth Taylor perfumes should be considered cheapies, at least not the first three she released, they all cost over 160 dollars an ounce and debuted at the most high of the high end stores. Specially White Diamonds which cost 200 dollars an ounce upon release.I had no idea  they float around eBay for 10-20 USD for a 100ml bottle so something has clearly changed.

My Dilemma - stock up on frags for office wear?
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...I think your question contains the answer. If you have office-appropriate fragrances in your collection, just wear them. If you need new fragrances for office, buy them! I trust that your living situation will change at some point (few of us stay put for all eternity) and you will get the chance to wear your heavier favourites without a care. Better be armed with a comprehensive perfume wardrobe because you never know what the future will bring :)

What's your ultimate pick-me-up perfume?
by Sherapop | Perfumes & Brands
Re: Four feel-good frags...
...Sweetgrass:Sherapop:Looking at my windowsill this afternoon, I realized that the reason why these four bottles are completely drained is because I can wear them... the edp, which is gorgeous. Just curious, is there any difference between the edt and edp or are they just that, different concentrations?Hello, Sweetgrass!I have both the edp and the edt, which are very different. The edp is too sweet for me, but the edt works well. :wink...

Comments on perfumes: compliments and insults
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...Lah2o:Hi everybody, I just discovered this site yesterday and it has been fun reading all your replies! So far I've heard two comments regarding the perfume I was wearing that I will probably never forget.I was having a really, really lovely evening in a fine restaurant with my boyfriend. Before leaving I sprayed some Frederic Malle's Portrait of a Lady on me in the restroom. When we left the restaurant hand in hand my boyfriend took a good sniff and said "Mm, you smell like the woman of my life."Another time I was wearing Comme des Garcons Incense series Zagorsk. The goddaughter of my boyfriend told me I smelled "funny, like nose spray" O_oHi Lah2o, and welcome to Parfumo! I can only wish for compliments like you got from your boyfriend, seriously that is the best I've heard :)

Reviving original formulas
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...Seeing as the actual formulas are trade secrets it could just be a marketing ploy, especially in the midst of the current wave of reformulation. Without a vintage sample to compare it's impossible to say whether the perfume has remained the same. IFRA regulations could play a role but that is being discussed in another thread -- interesting stuff! Not saying it's a bad thing though -- when big businesses keep swallowing smaller perfume houses, some kind of a sign of independence is really good pr and will definitely catch my eye.

EU amendment to sharpen restrictions on fragrance allergens
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...Sherapop, some really good points, especially on BHT! Are there any sources aside of Wikipedia on it? Any theories as to why it's pushed? It's a shame though that friend of mine cannot stand me wearing "Coromandel", even though she is fine with everything else I've used in her presence and uses some perfume herself. But then again some light sneezing just the once is probably not enough to turn a person off perfume :)

What's in a fragrance name?
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...A case in point: "Mitsouko". There are the stories about how the name came about, because there is certainly nothing Japanese about the fragrance, but I personally think it was a sort of a marketing ploy of its time when rich European folks were high on japonaiserie and chinoiserie and consumed anything even hinting at ~oriental~ ~exoticism~ with gusto. In other words, same thing that goes on today, since the name is part of the marketing. Also in niche perfumery.ADDENDUM: I also think about this when non-French perfumers give French names to their products. It's the lingua franca of perfumery but it still comes off as somewhat pretentious when there are 6500 languages in the world to choose from.

Help! My Laundry Smells Like Oud!
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...I've been in the no-fragrance team for as long as I've had to buy my own washing and laundry products (since age 15). As far as I know I am not hypersensitive to smells but I like to keep my nose as unperturbed as possible and I think that's part of why I enjoy perfume. I am usually pretty aware of smells in my environment and the less added fragrance (that doesn't come from other people's perfume) there is, the better.I generally like my fragrance to be personal and intimate and certainly not coming from a washing machine. I also smoke, which is somewhat at odds with the rest of my philosophy, but I really like the combo of Alien's nuclear jasmine and menthol cigarette on myself. Better than the cigarettes alone, and Alien sticks to my wool sweaters for days until I wash them.Wrt the plastic smell, I think it depends on what kind of a house you live in and what materials have been used over time to remodel and repair it. I lived in a recently renovated flat that had that plastic smell about it and my then-boyfriend had constant respiratory problems until we moved out of there.

Which perfume will be your next buy ?
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...LIDGE = L'Instant de Guerlain I believe :)I am also intrigued by Frédéric Malle's selection, so much so I almost bough a travel spray set blind... But luckily sense intervened and I'm back to reading reviews and looking for samples before committing to a full bottle.

Which type of perfume collector are you ?
by Sweetgrass | Perfumes & Brands
...Lol! I am definitely somewhere between the eager novice and the housewife (even though my actual living situation is far from that). I have little patience for the really hard-to-understand perfumes - although I will give each one that I get my hands on a fair trial and control for factors that might turn an experience sour for me before writing anything off as unwearable. I hold on to my samples because my tastes and personal chemistry will probably change a lot as I age (see: Mitsouko, a true olfactory love but not one I could yet pull off). Also this:I am the "Perfume is for use" collector and partly go to great lengths for getting my hand on a bottle of a juice I find promisingMy thoughts exactly! Also I try not to hold on to perfumes that I wouldn't use. I have very little storage space and precious few full bottles, and if I am not convinced by a perfume, I take a decant for reference and try to find the bottle a good home. That reminds me -- do you have any particular criteria for committing to buy a full bottle?
