The Science of Scent
by MiaTrost | Perfumes & Brands
...Scarletting:Another thought: how easy is it, if at all possible, to retro-- what is it called when you craft something backwards? I'm drawing a blank on the word, but to be able to give a chemist a sample of an unknown, irreplaceable perfume and have them recreate it would be mindblowing. The matching of a perfume or scent composition is, to some extent, possible. I recently got my hands on Perfumery, Practice and Principles by Calkin & Jellinek, which, amongst other subjects, elaborates on the topic.Synopsis: The gas chromatography (GC) separates a blend into most volatile, less volatile and most tenacious components. Materials can be detected that represent less than 0.01% of the total mixture and in the hands of a skillful operator, the perfume can be nearly completely separated into its individual components. The presence of other more 'difficult' naturals may be suggested by the mass spectrometer (MS) identification. The GC machine can be connected to a MS and a computer, which are able to give a positive identification of the various components. In effect the perfumer can be given a list of all identified materials, often comprising some 95% of the compound, together with their approximate percentages. However, to convert all this information into the form of a perfume formula requires considerable experience on the part of the GC analyst and perfumer. A perfume may, if sufficiently simple in structure, be reconstructed quite accurately in this way with little recourse to the human nose. But more often than not, even a duplication that closely follows the analysis of the original will require some additional work by the perfumer. Many natural materials are difficult to detect when present in trace amounts, yet in combination they can add enormously to the richness of the perfume. Such materials can only be found by analytical smelling of the original perfume. Consequently, the application of the GC/MS-plus-perfumer analyses yields approximate matches.

...Dulce, this is a fun challenge. How about "Eau Divine", "Séville à l'Aube" and "Ultraviolet"? They may fit the bill."Eau Ambrée" is a lovely and light take on amber but it does feature a citrus opening. Do report back if you happen to come across your perfect match. :)

...ScentFan:Question: will this affect the sale of essential oils and distillations for aromatherapy and such? If so, I have other sites to approach. Yes, to some extent. The scheduled labelling of ingredients such as geraniol, linalool, etc., will be relevant for most essential oils because they are primary components of approx. 90% thereof.

How to spread the word ..
...We would like to contact pertinent retailers/stores in other countries in order to inquire, if they'd kindly consider to provide publicity. After all, their customers are likely to sign if only they knew about the petition. It would be fabulous input, if we obtained your help with this one. Please let me know which ones we ought to contact - of course, those operating within the EU are the ones we'd like to target first. It would be greatly appreciated, if you could spare some time to mail to the pertinent retailers in your country. :) In order to prevent overlaps, I list all countries covered. Just send me a PM so I can keep track.Covered: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czeck Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Island, Italy, Lithunia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, US~~~Thanks so much for your support, GothicHeart and WolfM. :D

...Thanks for your feedback, Triffid, and for signing. :D Every signature matters. Triffid:The US market must be huge, economically speaking?Yes, although Europe (still) represents the largest market. However, the "stable growth patterns in emerging markets of Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Eastern Europe" surely are also very dear to the (European) fragrance industry. Just to give you an idea: the global fragrances and perfumes market is estimated to exceed $36 billion by 2017 (see: GCI Magazine).I believe it would be rather silly to ignore consumers. And, as stated above, "any interested parties" are invited by the Commission to contribute - that includes consumers from all over the world. Fragrance lovers unite!

...I am aware of that question and already addressed it over at Kafka's. My comment:Difficult to tell whether or not the EU would care about signatures by non-EU citizens. However, to add my two pence here, it might indicate how much demand there is outside of the EU for perfumes produced within the EU, and the economical impact of this legislative is surely an issue to be considered by the Commission. Also, the regulatory authority tasked with evaluating public sentiment regarding the law is actively soliciting contributions to the debate by "any interested party" (see: Public consultation on fragrance allergens).
