Oldies but Goodies - Cashmere Mist Cashmere Mist (Eau de Toilette) - DKNY / Donna Karan
by Briarthorn | Perfumes & Brands
...I've decided to start a Weekly Scent discussion thread where we can use the weekly scent as a jumping off point to discuss materials, impressions, genres, noses, and the different things that we associate with it. I decided to start with an old classic I love, Donna Karan's "Cashmere Mist@DKNY".I haven't done a proper review of this. I need to collect all my wear notes together so I can get one down. This scent always wows me when I put it on. There is something about it that reminds me of taking a blanket from the hot dryer and snuggling in it's warmth with a cup of something hot and comforting. I also get images of rubbing my face in my cats fur when he's been sitting in the sun. It's not an anamalic scent but one of warmth, softness, and comfort. What are your experiences? The scent wears so well I feel like I should have paid a much higher price for it. Other Woody, suede, musky scents have not managed to create this same snuggle effect for me. I do however get a hint of this feeling in Burberry Burberry Woman though. I was surprised because the notes are so different from each other. Why is that I wonder?Do you think It's possible to create a scent that wears like this with the current scent regulations or is this magic a thing of the past?

Trying Harder
by Briarthorn | Perfumes & Brands
...Sorceress:I believe there are just some perfumes that are not made for me, no matter what the season, no matter what I do to try them, no matter what I do with layering. I have certain bottles of perfume that are relegated to the back burner that I sniff every so often because I love the scent until I put them on. Then I want to wash them off.Chanel No. 5 is one of them. Mitsouko, which the world adores, sits lonely on my bureau. Why do some of the greats not agree with me. They just don't. But yet, I love their scents. They just don't really do it for me upon application. Aromatics Elixir is another. At least I know I've tried many a time, and I go on to others. There are far too many in our world to adore than to worry about a few that don't agree with me when I actually apply them. I can open the bottles and sniff any time. And then go on to a perfume that adores me and I adore it. Life is too short to wrestle with a perfume.Have you tried spraying on a scarf or your clothing? It's a way to enjoy it more than sniffing the bottle without your tricky skin mussing it up :)

Missing In Action...
by Briarthorn | Perfumes & Brands
...Madkat:gotta love getting samples of scents that were discontinued over 10 years ago.. Nice to try but don't dare fall in love with it.. LOLI read this and thought of all the times I've said it to myself. Then I thought of this:Very Good AdviceFrom "Alice in Wonderland"Music and Lyrics by Sammy Fain and Bob HilliardI give myself very good adviceBut I very seldom follow itThat explains the trouble that I'm always in Be patient, is very good advice But the waiting makes me curious And I'd love the change Should something strange beginWell I went along my merry way And I never stopped to reason I should have know there'd be a price to pay Someday...someday I give myself very good advice But I very seldom follow it Will I ever learn to do the things I should? Will I ever learn to do the things I should?

Chanel Gardenia EdT?
by Briarthorn | Perfumes & Brands
...DaisyDukes:I really appreciate the replies. I look forward to more reviews on parfumo as well. Good or bad-I find reviews very helpful.I do have a "newbie" question. Is there a way for me to see member's likes and dislikes? I don't often have the opportunity to sample very often, so online reviews and preferences help me hone in on my targets.Keep the reviews coming :lol:Thank you!I have not tried the Chanel Gardenia Parfum. I personally would be weary of dropping that kind of dough on a soliflor when there are so many incredible Gardenia scents out there for a fraction of the price that Chanel is asking. In general I am extremely unhappy with the quality of Chanel lately, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to try other houses. Gardenia is one of my favorite notes. If you are in the US I can send you a 1ml sampler of my Gardenia scents. You may find one you really like. I think Jovan Island Gardenia ($8) is one of the most authentic gardenias I've ever put on. But I have many other's you can try too.Edited for typos.

Say hello and/or introduce yourself (if you like)

Stumbled here by accident
...I was thinking about roses. I could swear that in some of my better perfumes and samples I could pick out if a rose used was a Taif rose or Bulgarian rose, and I think I actually prefer the Taif. I wanted more info on the types of roses. The notes section on roses in Fragrantica didn't help. So I did a google. I found a blog by ScentFan that broke it all down. It was so well done. I was able to confirm that I was definitely smelling a difference (and not making it up as sometime your senses can do). Then I read a few reviews. Then a few more. It was the reviews that really dragged me back here. The quality of the reviews are pretty high on this site. I need more information when deciding on a scent, especially a blind buy. A simple. It waz gr8t is no help. After a bit, I started poking around some more at other parts of the site. I liked that the forums were a bit more quiet. The threads here have more information that I find useful without having to weed through a million crap threads that drum up traffic to an AD based site. So I made an account. And then started to put up my collection and I noticed something awesome, I could put in my minis and decants! I also like that I can make a folder to put in my 200 or so samples. I just need to figure out how to do it. This is a site that expands my knowledge of perfumes (ScentFan is great). I have been a bit reticent to post new topics (Fragrantica has made me a tad gun shy) but I think I can feel a bit more comfortable here to post some of the different questions I have been collecting in my head these past couple of years for discussion. There seems to be enough serious perfume enthusiasts to intelligently answer my questions here. I would really like to have some intelligent discussions about different scents, materials, etc.Apicius, I was so relieved when I saw that this site isn't AD based and not commercial. Perhaps It's because I'm an American (and a civil servant), that I am so heartbroken to see everything in my society being broken down to a price tag. Every single aspect of our culture seems to be inundated by how much money one can get. It feels like nothing is genuine or appreciated because it has value outside of money. There is no room for helping someone because they are human and need help. They must be deserving of the dollar before it can be spared. Heartbreaking. Perfume is so personal (scent memory and all that) that it's refreshing and uplifting to have a place to discuss my hobby, and how It evokes what it does, where I don't have to worry about the admin deleting or editing my thoughts and ideas because it's not profitable for me to express them. It also make it easier for me to take the reviews more seriously because I know that you aren't getting kickbacks to ensure that only positive reviews for a scent are easily read. It all feels more genuine and safe from the over commercialization of the rest of my life. Thanks for that.I have no idea how you afford to keep the site going, donations? If so tell me how to give.

A special request to the new users
by Briarthorn | Parfumo Community
...MiaVonTrost:Cybernoir:is there a place on parfumo that goes over all the features, i am having a tough go of it. (...)i have a pretty steep learning curve here. is there an overview of features? No, there is no feature tour. And I too believe some kind of how-to would be helpful. I kept discovering features for months after joining ... Anyway, do let us know whatever feature it is you are wondering about.I thought about gathering up all the different posts I have found as I explore in one place for myself. Perhaps I'll organize it and send it to admin incase they want to use it. I should have time this weekend to clean up my notes.

LUSH UK vs US, US is getting no love!
by Briarthorn | Perfumes & Brands
...The Lush UK site states that they ship to the US but that it's "subject to custom's clearance". I want to ask around to see if anyone State Side has had any issues with this before I order. Maybe I can find someone traveling there to bring me something back... I'm not sure what year the different scents were put out, but I think most of the ones I tried were from 2010 and 2011, when they were more readily available here in the States. Orange blossom was too sharp and white. I didn't care for it. I didn't like Karma either, I can't find my review notes and I think I gave my sample away, so I can't tell you why exactly I didn't like it, sorry. I am a big fan of the freshly picked and bruised mint with that beautiful dry grass earthiness in The smell of Weather Turning. I think I like Dirty for many of the same reasons that I like the smell of Weather Turning, the mint the earthiness, but there is also an herbal sweetness from the tarragon and thyme that I thought made it different enough from The Smell of Weather Turning that I would like to own both. Lust is one that I am indifferent about the opening but the heart sings on my skin. The rose and ylang-ylang in this one are so beautiful. I think this is the first Lush scent I bought the full bottle of. The Smell of Freedom was a kind of generic woodsy opening, but I really like it. There was an incense quality here as well that was balanced by a really nice lemongrass zing. The dry down for me had a bit of sweet neroli and jasmine. It was really pretty. Furze I tried for the first time yesterday. It was so soft on my skin I had a difficult time finding it. When I caught just light snatches of it I got the impression of playdough. But when I sniffed my skin directly it was a really pretty vanilla and coconut scent. I think I need to decant this one into an atomizer for a better idea of how it smells. I also tried the Tuca Tuca for the first time last night, sorta. I received it in the mail and almost 2/3 of it leaked out, so It was all over me when I unpacked it. It was a sweet jammy violet. Very much violet but not candied like Chowards, it was more like a baked good. It was a very unique violet to add to my collection and I am pretty bummed out that I have so little to enjoy. I had been chasing this dragon for some time. I also received my Imogen Rose last night but I haven't taken it for a spin yet.Overall, I am consistently impressed with the quality of the Lush scents. They always have great longevity and normally there is an interesting evolution on the skin. The projection/sillage of them tends to be NUCLEAR. This could be great for some people, disastrous for others who are heavy handed.

LUSH UK vs US, US is getting no love!
by Briarthorn | Perfumes & Brands
...Soo, I somehow ended up on the LUSH UK site and WHOA! Half the stuff outta stock or "discontinued" on the US site is still available in the UK. What gives? I have spent an obscene amounts of $$ on ebay for stuff not on the US site and all this time I could have ordered from the UK?I have a bid on Smell of Weather Turning. It's too high for me to want to admit here. /cry I wish I had discovered this a few hours ago. I mean look at this UK site... there is Dear John, Smell of Weather Turning, Devil's Nightcap, and so very many more. Kurbside Violet! Sigh...Last edited by Briarthorn (Today 05:42:03)
