Underappreciated Fragrances - which are yours?
by Apicius | Perfumes & Brands
...I must say that Micallef's "Avant Garde" is one of those underestimated frgrances. I just wore it and wrote a review.Among the classic Eau de Colognes, I really appreciate "Eton College" by Taylor of Old Bond Street as one of the best, and so far, it is owned only by 2 Parfumo users!

How do you use the collection list?
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...Tictureall, it is up to you how you want to use this feature. If I buy a fragrance that I have previously tested, it goes into my "I have" collection, and I take it out of my "tested" collection. Personally, I am not using the "samples" collection - simply because I have so many and lost overview :-).

Basenotes/Parfumo Comparison
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...Seatonica:As a perfume site Parfumo has so many wonderful features. With only a handful of high-level participants the forum, however, runs the risk of looking cliquey. I don't know what you can do to avoid this, other than grow the membership. It just seems to me that others, not being in the know, might feel uncomfortable about joining in.We can all help avoid such impressions. Please leave a welcome note on the wall if you see a new user. Also, please pay some attention to their first postings and reviews. It is a good thing to leave some encouraging words under a first review.

...AromiErotici:Vibert, Scentimental, Pluran, Foetidus were ( and still are ) exceptional reviewers who have apparently gone on to other things. mrclrmnd, Mimi Gardenia, Shamu and a few others are also notables that have stopped posting. They are missed since their contributions were ones of quality.Oh, yes, I agree, Aromi. I especially liked the short but brilliant reviews by SirSlarty.

Re: Fancy Stuff
...Pipette:Maybe we could exchange recipes?Next to "Kartoffelsalat" comes to mind "Wiener Schnitzel" (Viennese veal cutlet).By incident, I just made some 'Kartoffelsalat' this morning which I will have this evening with Wiener Würstchen. It's easy:- some leftover potatoes from yesterday's meal, cooked, pealed and sliced- 1 onion, finely chopped- 1 pickled cucumber, chopped - 2 generous spoons of mayonnaise- 1 teaspoon of mustard- 4 spoons of milk- salt, black pepper, a few spritzes Worcester sauceSimply mix everything together and leave it in the fridge for a few hours!Sorry for being a bit off-topic :)

What are your favorite Rose perfumes?
...Oh,yes, me, too!"Rose Barbare" is definitely the best so far.For a darker rose, I can recommend Washington Tremletts "Black Tie" and among the Montale Oud range, "Aoud Flowers" has the most mature and respectable approach to the rose theme.May I also add a warning? Never ever wear Cartier's "Declaration d'un Soir" together with clothes that are difficult to wash! This perfume contains what we will be getting in the future once the IFRA succeeds with their plans to prohibit natural rose oil.

Having a hard time picking my SotD
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...Yes, I know that too. When I can't decide I usually end up with one of my all time favorites, i.e. "Chamade Homme". I can never go wrong with that fragrance.Sometimes it helps if you commit yourself to a few days of the famous zero perfume diet. If you still can't decide there is always the Parfumo Assistant which will give you tips what to wear. The tips are calculated due to the data that the Parfumo users have provided. It is a great tool but I am not sure how many people have recognised its advantages yet. (Maybe a topic for a separate thread).

To start a "Like" Parfumo.net on Facebook Campaign

Re: Let's start a "Like" Parfumo.net on Facebook C
...MiaTrost: Good point Shera. Have you seen this post on the German site?http://www.parfumo.de/tourYes, a while ago, Don has come up with the idea that we should have a kind of appetizer for new visitors. A little ppt-presentation that simply shows what you can do at Parfumo.I think, for a first time visitor, it is not quite self-explaining what Parfumo is all about and why one should join. The Parfumo Tour seems to be a bit work in progress at the moment but once it is ready, I am sure we will have an English version of it here as well.

Basenotes/Parfumo Comparison
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...Drseid:If Parfumo can get more people to post and participate in the forums that would be the final piece of the puzzle leading to its success long-term, IMO.Oh yes, that is true. Maybe Don can post some ads for Parfumo on the net. Many people who would be interested do not know us. We must reach a point where we can attract people that had no previous account at one of the other community sites.BTW, the numbers of visitors are growing. :)

Basenotes/Parfumo Comparison
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...First of all, I really like BN. It is actually the community where my perfume hobby started before eventually, I found Parfumo.BN is a fantastic ressource for perfume reviews - although the focus might have changed a little during the past 2 years towards the forum. I miss contributions by some great reviewers they had a few years ago (and of course I wish they would come here). The main difference between BN and Parfumo now is that BN runs on a standard solution provided by Huddler whereas the Parfumo site is individually developed and customised for the needs of this community - and will be developed further!A standard software solution is always second best to the users; they might have to compromise. It will probably not be so easy to invent new features as it is on Parfumo. On the other hand, BN will not have to look after the technical part. They do not have to employ their own developer(s).The Huddler sites all look more or less the same. Their business model seems to be to migrate communities to their platform for free but then take (most of) the income from the ads.The number of visitors displayed at the new BN site does not look very encouraging to me at the moment. I think it is a good idea to give them some support when there is the chance to do so.

Perfume photos not admitted to the queue
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...Some words concerning this new little feature:Don and I are shocked about the reactions that the „cat issue“ provoked. It was wrong to reject peoples' photos without giving a note to the persons concerned. It was a bad mistake on our side to do such a thing without further consideration, and we can only apologize. This is generally not the way that we want to treat the users and I think most of you should remember several occasions where things were handled in a different way. So, we want to take measures that such a situation will not happen again. We do not really understand the degree of the current commotion. There have been no such reactions at the German Parfumo where respective photos have been rejected just as well. Personally, I am also shocked that the words „freedom of speech“ have been used in this context. I find this highly inappropriate. We have absolutely no intent to limit or violate anybody's freedom of speech. Don and I have thoroughly discussed the situation during the past days and we got helpful advice from several users. One result was that we had to acknowledge that the current process of uploading, admitting or rejecting perfume pictures does not live up to our own quality standards. It is not fair to simply reject a photo for whatever reason. Our understanding is that any photo uploaded is valuable no matter how blurred or off topic it may be. Somebody has taken effort, has made a contribution and this merits to be appreciated. Therefore, from now on, no photo uploaded will simply be rejected by Parfumo. (Of course, this does not apply to highly offending content such as hardcore porn and the like). If it cannot be admitted to the perfume queue for whatever reason, the respective user will find it in his or her personal photo album. It will not get lost and all of the users' friends and visitors will see it. Also, a notification will be sent.Don has stated the criteria for the perfume photo queue elsewhere so I do not have to repeat them here.

Some thoughts about cats and dogs
by Apicius | Off Topic
...I have had a look at some of the previous posts and I have to say I do not understand all this commotion. Maybe it helps if I explain a little bit about Parfumo.Parfumo is about perfume, and perfume only. This is a basic decision and cannot be negotiated.Wherever people come together because they join the same passion, it is only natural that they show other facets of their personality as well, and at Parfumo, they are welcome to do so. This is why we have the Off-Topic area, the personal blog pages and the personal photo album. Please have a look at my photo album on my personal page. You will find pictures of my custom-made Bike Friday – I show and explain every detail of it. I take a lot of pleasure in riding it, and I also like to discuss all the features it has. Let's say there might be other perfume lovers interested in folding bikes, and so I could start a thread in the Off-Topic section where we soon would discuss all the pro's and con's: Moulton vs. Brompton, Shimano vs. SRAM, the best possible handlebars and so on. Since I am so fond of my bike I would want everybody to see it, and so I would decide to upload perfume pictures with my bike, and soon others would do the same. At first, people would probably find it smart to bring together a niche bike and a niche perfume on a photo. But after bike photo no. 219, some other people – especially those who have no understanding for my hobby – would probably write comments like: „Oh, no, not that bike again!“ Eventually, Don would stop accepting my bike photos. This is what happened here to the cat photos. We have hundreds of them, and Don has decided that it is enough now. When I come home from work, I usually log on to Parfumo. At first, I have a look if we have some new users so I can leave a welcome note. Then I am looking after my PN's. Every day, I try to maintain the translation file so there will be no gap between the fragrance notes on the German and the international site. On the way, I also look after the unification of fragrance notes that runs in Parfumo Research. I then try to process a few proposals and corrections and sometimes, I even find time to write one or the other review.I like it here with you, and so I gladly provide all this service, together with Don and lots of other people.I am into perfume, not cats. They don't bother me, I tolerate your passion, but please don't expect me or Don to work for it. Don't blame me for being immodest, but I think Don, me and the other helpers in the background have a lot to offer. We give gladly, please take it, it's free! But stop asking for things that we cannot provide or do not want to give.Parfumo is about perfume, and perfume only. Perfume is our interest. We accept that people want to socialize and so we need the Off-Topic, that is accepted. But I know, Don is always having a very close look at it, especially the Off-Topic section on the German side: How big does it get in relation to the other parts of the forum? Are there users who spend time only there and hardly contribute anything to a perfume topic? Do people get along with each other? And finally, the main question: are we still focussed on perfume or are we becoming something else? You can discuss nearly everything here, it would even be tolerated to promote a special interest or campaign for it – but not beyond the point where the basic character of this site would be changed or where we cannot cope appropriately with a controversy. None of your arguments will make Don go into a direction that he does not want – and loose his fun in the end. One reason for this commotion here might be that there are different concepts and understandings of internet communities.Don and me are not fans of Mark Zuckerberg, and we do not want Parfumo become a sort of facebook with perfume talk. We fight for every user, but not for every minute the users stay at Parfumo. Parfumo is a place for a very special interest, a functional forum, and we do not intend to become a general internet community where everything goes. Having said that, please do not make Parfumo the only place for your social activities. If you expect Parfumo to cover all your interests, you might experience frustration. It is a healthy thing to have more than just one interest, so please go out and find people that you can share your other interests with – in your neighborhood, in your city or maybe in another corner of the internet. And if these people are open-minded, then please recommend us!Enough for now – back to perfume!
