Welcome to Parfumo Research!
by Apicius | Parfumo Research
...A few words about what is behind Parfumo Research:At Parfumo, the users have always been able to suggest missing perfumes or to report errors in the database. For a very long time, we had a simple 2-step workflow. A few people checked the proposals, then Don checked them again and finally added them to the catalog. This worked out fine until Parfumo began to grow. When Don started the development of Parfumo International in 2011, it was the first time we got into an awful delay that was not so easy to handle. Some people had to wait for months until their proposals were finally added. It became clear that we needed something else, the old system simply did not comply any longer with our quality standards. After we had got Parfumo.net going, the concept for the next major project was designed: Parfumo Research. It is pretty obvious that Don cannot look after each wrong fragrance note that needs a correction or look deeply into every single proposal for a new perfume addition. He can either do this – or develop new features for Parfumo. We came to the conclusion that we must get Don out of this work in the long run. So, the question came up if it would be possible to hand over this job to somebody else – maybe to the whole Parfumo community, in a way.The idea was born that we want to organize the adding process more or less according to the Wikipedia concept. This means that we want the users not only to suggest new perfumes or report error corrections. We also want the Parfumo community take the lead in checking the proposals, discuss them, enhance them if necessary and finally give the Okay for the adding to the catalog. What looks like an adding feature on first sight is actually a little bit more. All users will be able to discuss a proposal or a revision. Some users will also be able to make changes to the original proposal if necessary to correct an error or enhance the information. Proposals and revisions will only be added to the database if a certain number of trusted users have given their okay. Not all users will be able to edit other people's proposals. We do not find this appropriate for newbies or those who only occasionally take part. And so, there will be different levels of authorization. For instance, whoever corrects or enhances the information given by another user must have read and understood the Parfumo Research guidelines. Quality comes first! Today, not many people have enhanced authorizations. You find them in the “Team” tab. Don will slowly build a team of supporters who will look after the quality of the perfume records. If it comes worst, the team will stay as small as it is today. If we are good, a big number of people will join. If things turn out best this great community will eventually take over the complete maintenance of perfume data sets. The more users will play an active role, the more effective the process will become. I believe that we should be able to reduce the current queue and so reduce the time between a proposal and the actual addition. We might also be able to considerably increase the number of additions and revisions. We believe that a complete perfume community can achieve much more than a small team, given that we find the right way to get us organized. This is why we talk about a project to build a catalog of all perfumes in the world. This is all new to us. Parfumo is the first perfume site that invites its users to take part like this. There is absolutely no experience that we can refer to, and we do not know if it will work out in the end. We are not in a hurry. The next days, we will take the time necessary to thoroughly look at the new system and test its usability. Please get acquainted with it and give us your feedback.

Parfumo/Fragrantica
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...Sherapop:I learned this lesson the hard way at the salon de parfum recently. After suffering for months under the tyranny of a troll whom I was trying to pacify and socialize, I finally let him go. Only now has my peace returned.Just say "No" to trolls. No acknowledgement. No reply. :twisted:A wise decision! With all respect, Sherapop, but your troll was a stupid one since all he did was insulting you.The more dangerous and intelligent ones create users in perfume communities, spend a lot of time and energy to be good friends with as much people as possible, even donate money. At some point, maybe after years, when they think they have achieved a "position" they start picking at and insulting a few other users. When they finally get sacked, they leave behind a horrible mess of frustration and disappointment, and many users put the blame on the webmaster for banning such a nice person! One of that kind was best friends with all the ladies at the German site, but he became sarcastic and disrespectful whenever a male user posted an elaborate review - and so I think I was one of his preferred victims. I never reacted and at some point he lost interest and simply ceased to visit Parfumo.

...Since I don't go there a lot I don't know what "Fragrantica mode" is but if there should be some old stories between some people who know each other from that site please get it settled via PMs.It is okay to discuss Parfumo vs. Fragrantica but please do not bring it to a personal level between Parfumo users.

Seeking review advice - update or replace?
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...Since the awards you might have got refer to the original review I would not edit the review and completely exchange its content. If you think that the original review got completely wrong it is okay to delete it and start new.I usually edit my review in such a case, put a line at the end and write al little bit underneath, explaning that my opinion has changed and why.

I would like to introduce myself as the owner of
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...Sherapop, Dlane1953, please have a look at the welcome note for professionals. We have decided - long ago - that if we have users who are into perfume business here we recommend them to tell us who they are. Anybody who might be interested should be able get into contact with them. Actually, we do not want people to hide behind nicknames and then write enthousiastic reviews about the perfumes of only one specific brand or post recommendations about one specific shop. We had some experiences of that kind at the German Parfumo, and they took some effort. For my understanding, saying who you are and what you do is not an ad. An ad is saying: "We have the most precious fragrances for affordable prices" or "We do the best service of all" and the like. I will take care that such a behaviour - if it occurs - will not be repeated by the persons concerned. There are great people in the perfume business, people who have truely dedicated themselves to perfume. I want them to be able to join in and contribute to Parfumo. By now I have met a few (perfumers, shop owners, brand managers) and in some cases I deeply regret they are not here and share their rich experiences with us. May I ask for your support to show the right way if somebody stumbles in and starts talking about his or her business? As for Adriana/Decantshop she has not contributed anything so far - no reviews, no participation in forum discussions - except on her own behalf. She will probably be forgotten in a few weeks. I'd like to see her contributing like everybody else, but if the next I see from her is again a praise of her business, I will surely ask Don to delete her account. After all, it is not a big deal.BTW: I might drop a few lines about this decantshop at the German Parfumo. Maybe you are not aware of it, but for about one or two years, decanting is officially illegal in my country. You cannot any longer go to the next perfume shop and ask for a sample of something. They will very likely tell you they have none. The reason why is - guess what? There is no INCI declaration on a perfume vial! The only samples you get in an ordinary perfume shop are the ones that they get for promotion - attached to a card with neatly printed declarations. Some of the niche shops ignore it and they would still fill a sample for you, but they are doing it illegally. We are lucky that, so far, these ridiculous regulations are not being enforced by the authorities. However, some of the niche perfume shops have been getting a bit reluctant to process an order that contains only samples. Firstinfragrance has become quite expensive, and at times, they announced that a sample only order would take longer that others. Sometimes, we also see limitations by the maximum possible amount of samples per order. It is pretty clear that they are not very fond of such requests.Let's say that in Germany, we are living under "perfume sample prohibition". The knowledge about decanters from abroad might com in handy for some people. After all, people must get their booze!

...DECANTShop:Hello Parfumo.netSuch nice community you guys have here and I am thrilled to be a part of it. My name is Adriana and I am one of the owners of [urlWarm regards,AdrianaI have been asked to delete the user DECANTShop and this post due to unauthorized advertising. However, I tend not to, although this is definitely advertising. The post of DECANTshop in the suggestion thread contains interesting information. I had a look and it seems not just like another online store for perfumes. There are not many online shops for decants, in fact, I know only The Perfumed Court (Or are there numerous others?). After all, for many perfume lovers, their hobby depends on the availability of decants and samples. I think The Perfumed Court can live with a little bit of competition, and I do not want to promote the one and only well known shop for decants by deleting any information about others. So, Adriana, welcome to Parfumo. Please make sure you read the welcome note for professionals.

EXILED! The stories from Defected Fragrantican Members
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
Re: Censorship
...Rubyred:There were good things about Fragrantica including the vast data base, the numbers of participants and wide range of reviews including by perfume not-snobs (which I miss here and I try and do my little bit to redress) as well as perfume elitists, the visuals were attractive and easy to navigate.(...)I love reading the reviews of what I will call the elitists (Sherapop et al) but I do miss on Parfumo, a lot, the reviews written by perfume not-snobs. I like it when someone says why they love Midnight Fantasy - it's a clear and honest opinion and grounds a wider variety of offerings. If only some of the people who are listed as owning a perfume wrote a short review (or a long review, even better) on what they own, or some of them, then I think this site would be greatly improved. That might be just a function of this being a newish site, but I think there is a reticence here of perfume non-snobs to offer their reviews. Some might say fine, leave it as a more refined site.Thank you, Rubyred, for your thoughts. As a change, it is very good to read some criticism about Parfumo. I hope we do not shy away too many beginners and "non-snobs". Everybody is invited to join in and publish his or her thought about perfume. The question is not at all how you write and what style you prefer, or how much you are used to express yourself in written words. As long as people show just a little bit effort and engagement, any contribution is highly welcome!

EXILED! The stories from Defected Fragrantican Members
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...Pipette:Each website has its "flavor". I am only laughing - when on occasions like for instance at the Milan Esxence Trade Fair, the officials of the various websites are meeting in the flesh, are attending the same seminars, go to the same cocktail parties and greet each other friendly as colleagues in the same field - while we regular mortals are sweating about how to behave in order not to misbehave.Hm, Don and me will not attend the Esxence Trade fair in Milan, but if we did we would certainly not feel inclined to socialize or exchange compliments with the Fragrantica owners. They try to censor Parfumo, and as one can see in this thread they apparently discriminate against users who have accounts on both sites. Currently, I cannot imagine any topic that I want to discuss with them. Definitely no air kissing at each others cheeks as somebody supposed a few posts above! This thread here is okay for me since I see that many people want to discuss the pro's and con's of both sites. I read this thread to stay informed about what people think. However, Don's way to deal with Fragrantica is simply to concentrate on the further improvement of Parfumo, and I think he is right.

...Howardjarvis:Dear Sir, To add to your confusion as a retired herbalist we refer to the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia in which the native tree of the British isles "Lime Flower" or Tilia cordata is commonly known as a lime flower tree. Not related to the citrus limes. A strange quirk of the English language. Also used as a tea for nervous tension (its a sedative),raised arterial pressure, hysteria, migraine, and feverish colds.I am lucky enough to have a 50 year old one in my back yard. Good luck, Howard Jarvis, Bud Parfums.Tilia cordata seems to be a sub-species of the linden tree! Howard, please use it in your next perfume, so we can add the Small-leaved lime or Winterlinde seperately to the database ;-)

Help needed: translation of notes.
by Apicius | Parfumo Research
...Hello! As some of you might know, I am looking after the Parfumo translation file for fragrance notes so all fragrance notes from the pyramids on Parfumo.de will be translated correctly to Parfumo International.I have a question to the native English speakers:The blossom of the linden-tree is 'Lindenblüte' in German which would be 'linden blossom' if translated literally. Now I see that the dictionaries give me the translation 'lime blossom' or 'lime tree blossom'.I find this quite confusing as the linden tree has nothing to do with limes. So far, I have used the translation 'linden blossom', and I would like to keep it like that. Is this comprehensible? Or is this bad English and should be changed?Currently, we have:Lindenblüte - Linden blossom französischer Lindenblüten-Akkord - French linden blossom accord Lindenblüten-Absolue - Linden blossom absolute französische Lindenblüte - French linden blossom französisches Lindenblüten-Absolue - French linden blossom absolute
