So, what about wine? And beer? And whiskey?
by Apicius | Off Topic
...Dolby:Is whisky one of your preferred tipple Apicius?... Which are your recommendations?I usually have a decent Speyside Malt and something smokier around, i.e. an Islay Malt. Whiskeys are not so far apart from each other as perfume, and with a decent bottle of each kind, you cover more or less the whole range. My recommendations are:Light and elegant malts:- Glenlivet- Glenturret- AuchentoshanPeat monsters:- Talisker- Lagavulin- LaphroaighThis refers to their standard products. Whiskey distilleries issue lots of special editions, so quality and style of the Whiskeys of one single distillery can vary a lot!Don, your help is needed!

Which MONTALE and/or KEIKO MECHERI for me, please?
...Since I see a few vanilla orientals in you collection, I think you should consider Montale's Boisée Vanillée. It is great! If you are looking at their oud line, the whole series could be more or less sorted by the opposites dark/masculine/less flowery - soft/feminine/more flowers.Generally, the older releases of the oud line are better IMHO, the new ones tend to be a bit experimental. I can recommend for testing: Black Aoud (very dark and intense), Aoud Flowers (dark and earthy, but with intense rose notes), Oud Queen Rose (more on the feminine side but still unisex.) I haven't teste the more feminine Ouds, such as White Aoud.

Ultra-Expensive Perfumes
by Apicius | Perfumes & Brands
...I have a simple rule. I don't pay more than what Guerlain asks for their best and most expensive perfumes.I do not pay twice as much for a sophisticated Amouage fragrance, because it will not be twice as good as something from Guerlain. It will be half as good! So, I own no Bond No.9's, no Clive Christian's, no Xerjoff, none of the more expensive Boadicea the Victorious', and only one Amouage for which I got a rebate of 50 €.I do test perfumes with very high prize tag, but with rather low expectations.

Minimalistic Perfumes Calycanthus Brumae - Acqua di Stresa
...Oh, there are a lot of puristic fragrances of all kinds. The question is, what kind of purism you want: puristic woods, flowers, green notes, musks?I would count in my latest purchase, "Calicanthus Brumae", because it focusses on one single floral accord and has almost no development. Also, the discreet pastel-coloured packaging of the current Acqua di Stresa perfumes indicates a puristic/minimalistic approach.

...Dulcemio, I am not a big fan of vanilla, but generally I thik there are no bad notes, only poorly made perfumes. There are certainly some vanillic perfumes that i really like, but I will not wear them very often.

A special request to the new users

...Perfumecrazy:Anyway, I have been to Basenotes and Fragrantica. I like the reviews mostly. I found out about your site through Basenotes. I have to say that I like the format of your reviews much more than the others - there is more useful info and detail. Also, the quality of the reviews is very high - I feel like the info is trustworthy as you can get given that fragrance is subjective and personal. I'm a long time fan of Sherapop so to see her here is fantastic.I am also glad Sherapop is here. For me, putting into words what I smell is the main attraction of this hobby, and I am glad that Parfumo focusses on the reviews so much. I have put my thoughts about perfume reviews into a How-To in my blog:http://www.parfumo.com/Users/Apicius/Blog

A special request to the new users
by Apicius | Parfumo Community
...I have a special request to the new users who came over recently from Fragrantica:Please make yourself acquainted with those features of Parfumo that are not available over there.Especially, I would like you to have a look at the perfume review section. Below each review, there is a 'Reply' button. People take a lot of effort to write good and interesting reviews, so please drop a few words once in a while. An even quicker way of giving some feedback is the little 'Award' button. Don't be stingy with the awards, please tick them even if the author is not ready for the Pulitzer prize. It simply means that you like what you have read, and the author will know that his or her review has been read by somebody!Something else - the Assistant! This section of Parfumo can give you valuable information with its personal statistics. If you tell Parfumo your daily wear, you will be very surprised about the result after a while. You can tell Parfumo what you wear by ticking the little grey spray bottle icon that you find on every perfume page.

Niche-istas! Your help, please, w/ woody-vanillic orientals
...Dulcemio:By the way, is Bois d'Armenie similar at all to Tonka Imperiale and Angelique Noir? I've tried those already.Yes and no. Many Guerlain fragrances share a certain vibe that includes something vanillic - I mean the famous Guerlinade. Guerlain simply can do vanilla. There are legends or rumors that they do not use pure vanillin. Instead they are said to have a supplier who produces vanillin the common, more expensive method from around 1900. The result was an impure vanillin. Other people think they simply add some ashes to make it dirtier.Anyway, I have translated my Bois d'Armenie review for you.
