...Dlane1953:[...] some reviews we've all seen at other sites (one, known here as the "F" site, in particular) that contains such lengthy, twisting, turning and discouragingly longwinded expositions that our eyes start to glaze over before we've actually seen our first reference to the word "perfume".That nails it down. Eyes start to glaze over ..

...Dalmajen:Cryptic:Res ipsa loquitur. http://www.parfumo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=637 Just read this...and one of the members mentioned how some of the Frag. members wrote silly reviews, connected to songs..I nearly fainted! as at least two of my reviews have a mention of a song..or music. Mind you, that comment was made before I was here.....so, I feel O.K. now! I wrote my reviews based on how the fragrance made me feel...I don't feel silly, at all! :DYep, we all agree that this member's stance on using lyrics or what have you in a review, was put forward in a rather undiplomatic fashion and far too all-in to be constructive. Nonetheless, I have to admit, that if a review does get lost in details, be it notes or lyrics/poetry, I tend to skip it. Though it doesn't bother me, as I am biased as to what "reviewers I choose to peruse beforehand", as AromiErotici had phrased it so nicely.

...Cryptic:Res ipsa loquitur. http://www.parfumo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=637Prima facie. ================Dlane1953:Pipette:Hey, hey, hey ... these remarks don't help to make a cozy atmosphere. Suppose that individual was reading ?Sorry, Pipette; on this statement I can't remain silent. If she is reading, then maybe she will learn to be more respectful of other's reviews. One person can't ride roughshod over another's feelings, can they? If this person is so sensitive, then she should learn up front that others are sensitive, too. Feelings can be hurt if words are not used properly. We don't have to love or even like every review we read; the point is to be thoughtful of other's feelings.Any forum requires as much social skills as the offline-world, if not more due to lack of face-to-face interaction (no facial expression etc. to pick up from). If that is understood, then surely no one would hold a grudge against her, given all is resolved. And now lets get back on topic.

...Cryptic:Digindirt:I wrote a review once and the lyrics to the song Lady in Red described the fragrance perfectly (to me). I used a good bit of the lyrics in my review. Somebody criticized it but I can't remember who. Same charming individual who went after Dlane1953. :roll:One man's trash is another man's treasure. If it was a well argued critique without getting personal, I can see no problem with criticism.

...Cryptic:MiaVonTrost:Dearest Cyptic, I wish you would stop posting these fancy links! Every time I want to check them out, they are blocked over here. I do not love GEMA :evil:Are you blocked from all of YT??? I'd die. Is it only certain labels or artists? If you tell me what you're blocked from viewing, I'll try to come up with a substitute. Thanks god I'm not blocked from all!! That would probably spark a national uprising against GEMA, a company doing usage rights in Germany. And laissez-fair is not exactly a Teutonic characteristic .. As to what they block, I have no idea until I am to find out. Anyway, your very considerate offer is much appreciated. Indeed, you ought to tailor your posts to GEMA politics so that I don't have to suffer from exclusion.

...I have been telling myself not to get hooked on fumes; to no avail of course because I have been turning a deaf ear to my own advice and indent to continue doing so. 8) PS. I like a proper spree .. I have been picking up so many useful terms from native English-speaking fragrance aficionados.

...Dlane1953:... all writers use literary techniques to make their point clear and vivid to the reader. No one owns these euphemisms, and some use them more effectively than others. Bottom line: Know whereof you speak before you begin your rant. Words are as effective as weapons.Absolutely! Euphemisms are literary characters; no more and no less. I am sorry to learn that you had such an upleasant encounter! After all, it's only a review on a forum.

...Dulcemio:Mia,Are you talking about someome plagiarizing entire reviews, or paragraphs, or just a clever phrase here and there?A plagiarised phrase here an there would not have inspired above sermon. For the most part, I reckognise paragraphs, sometimes paraphrised and sometimes not. The content, however, is always a 1:1 copy.Once, though, I saw an entire review. It's not that I am upset about such "reviews". Rather, they are a pointless farce, if you ask me.

...I like reviews.I wish I was more knowledgeable when it comes to structure and notes, in particular chemical compounds, or able to write as vivid and cleverly as some perfume lovers are able to do.When I sample a fragrance I am interested in, I also frequent reviews on it, for I strive to train my still relatively inexperienced nose and believe this is one way to do just that. Hence, I cherish a review that is, above all, informative and insightful (aka helpful review); if it is also cunning or beautifully written, all the better (and award-worthy). Shem-el-Nessim sparked my interest what others perceived in it. So I searched and, as often, turned to my usual suspects amongst the many perfume blogs. To be also consulted is, of course, Parfumo. Parfumo international, though growing, is yet too immature to always feature a review. If there are none, or not sufficient, then basenotes is next and sometimes even Fragrantica, though it really is tedious labour to track down the scarce gem over there ..Amongst the more sophisticated comments on bn and F, I repeatedly stumble across plagiarism; the ones on Shem-el-Nessim forming no exception here. I always wonder if those copy-cats take their fellow fumeheads for illiterate?! Don’t they anticipate that any halfway devoted blog-reader will instantly be able to tell and regard them as pretentious and unoriginal?! Leave alone their evident lack of respect for intellectual property. What do you value or bewail concerning perfume reviews?---Edit: typo

EXILED! The stories from Defected Fragrantican Members

...Gmmcnair:The last time I posted on basenotes in a thread I got blasted for an opinion about vintage fragrances. (...) I dried up after that...I am not exactly fond of some of the bn-folks myself and don't bother to frequent that platform anymore other than for the occasional review.Edit: typo

EXILED! The stories from Defected Fragrantican Members
by MiaTrost | Parfumo Community
...May I bash basenotes instead?Lamenting Fragrantica's evident lack of sophistication I can't keep up with .. and I reckon it becomes kinda lame anyway, since we all know how they work for the most part .. not that I would never bitch about anything. Anyhow, I once naively offered a freebee over at bn. After I had mailed the fume, guess what I received in return. NOTHING. Not even a thanks! Ungrateful #@%*!!! Archetypical bn-bloke, I reckon.Whereas peeps at parfumo (incl. the German site) always seem eager to return the favour. Not that there is need for that, yet, the gesture I appreciate indeed.
