Weekly Scent Discussion #21: Your newest discovery
by DorothyGrace | Perfumes & Brands
...I'm afraid I have, to date, been universally underwhelmed by the perfumes I have tried.I started testing because I was looking for a new 'special event' perfume or 'signature scent' and so headed off to a couple of niche shops and began purchasing samples online. Some of the perfumes I have tried have been very nice, most have been underwhelming, some have definitely been the perfumer's version of The Emporer's New Clothes, none have had that wow factor that would make me part with heavy cash although I would wear them if someone bought me any for Christmas. So I think my newest discovery is that we had some absolutely blinding scents created in the 1920s through to the 1980s and I didn't appreciate how good they were until they were lost.Gone but not forgottenCalecheAmazoneTabuPhul NanaDolce VitaAromatics ElixirMagie NoirPoison

What makes a perfume more suitable for young people?

What makes a perfume more suitable for young people?
by DorothyGrace | Perfumes & Brands
...I am reasonably certain that the classification of perfume as being for the young or for the mature is a modern phenomenon.I am old enough to remember people in my school leaving at 15 for fulltime employment and being expected to so as to contribute to the running of the household. Some were getting married at 16 and 17 to set up households of their own; I can't imagine any of them being pleased were marketers to tell them they weren't adult enough to wear Jean Patou Joy or Hermes Amazone and ought instead to gravitate towards Sugary Sugary Cough Cough Bonbon, Young doesn't mean what it used to.

What's the most popular in your country?
by DorothyGrace | Perfumes & Brands
...I couldn't say what is popular in England but whilst out and about today there were several ladies that had a noticeable amount of perfume on and it seemed to me that it was the same one on each.It had a sweet vanilla and caramel smell. A warm maybe chocolately smell. Nothing difficult or unusual so nothing like tuberose or Angel. Not at all woodyWhat perfume do you think that could be? I think it must be a popular one rather than a niche or obscure offering as it smells familiar so something I might have tried in a department store (definitely not something I had to send off for a sample of).

Weekly Scent Discussion #20: Who do you love?
by DorothyGrace | Perfumes & Brands
...I really wanted to get on with the new Molinard Habanita; beautiful bottle, good quality, complicated scent, can be had for a steel at allbeauty (£39.99 for 75 ml - drat! it still tempts me) but however much I try, Habanita does not sit well on my skin.It has a hopeful start, distinctive, powdery, musky, but all too soon it pulls a very strong Germoline smell on my skin a smell with which I am most familiar from childhood days filled with tears and scabby knees from rollarskate falls. It isn't just a scent memory, I really do smell of antiseptic Germoline. The early versions of Youth Dew were great. The new version is bitter, linear. My sister bought mum her first bottle in the late '60s and mum gave it up around 2012/2013 (at first I didn't know what she meant when she said it didn't smell like Youth Dew but that was because she had an old bottle in the front room and the new bottle in her bedroom - boy was I shocked when I tried the one in her bedroom). 50 years of wearing Youth Dew and then it's gone. Poor old mum; it was her only treat in life and she felt the loss keenly.

New Perfume Company
by DorothyGrace | Parfumo Research
...Hi.I have just added a proposal for a new perfume company (Besame Cosmetics Inc).I have only added one of their perfumes as a proposal and thought the others could be added if the company was added to the database. Is this the right way to do it or should I add all of their perfumes as proposals? Thanks.

Weekly Scent Discussion #20: Who do you love?
by DorothyGrace | Perfumes & Brands
...I adore Alf Lail O Lail and I don't know why because it is a strange old beast. Gushings of patchouli, medicinal, strangely sweet, earthy, in short not at all what I would call pretty and yet it is enticing. It makes my head smile when I am feeling down and being new to me has no bad memories associated with it.

Fire by Mary Greenwell
by DorothyGrace | Perfumes & Brands
...I haven't tried either of those perfumes. They each have an interesting list of notes.Speaking of Mary Greenwell, what has happened to her web page? The link takes me off to Parallels and I can't find her website using a search engine which is a shambe because I thought there might be a sample service.I lthought her perfume Plum was good (department store range) and would like to try Fire. Cherry and Lemon don't interest me but I would give them a go if I saw them.

How do you vote - old vs current formula?
by DorothyGrace | Parfumo Community
...When I come to vote on a perfume's longevity, sillage, rating I often find myself in a quandry.Easy enough when it is a new perfume because I just vote for that but what to do when reviewing a perfume of long -standing e.g. Poison?Old Poison = five star longevity, sillage, rating.New Poison = a bit less than that.I was really takenaback when I compared the version from a year ago with the version from a few years before that.In the review I can say which version I am reviewing but the voting is a different matter. What do you do? Do you vote according to the version you have even though not available; do you not vote at all because it might be misleading?Hmmm.

Weekly Scent Discussion #19: Bottle or Decant? Pros and Cons
by DorothyGrace | Perfumes & Brands
...I don't know from experience but the few I have decanted myself into 5ml bottles have changed .It could be because spraying into a funnel does add a lot of air into the liquid; another problem could be making sure that not only the bottles but the atmosphere is clean.

Weekly Scent Discussion #18: Many or just a Few?
by DorothyGrace | Perfumes & Brands
Collections
...I find other people's collections of interest.Looking at your shelves I see so many perfumes I have never heard of or never seen in my local shops (of course some can now be found by searching the internet but many years ago there was no way to know they even existed).I like to keep just a little of each of my perfumes as reference and no longer throw away empty bottles. My shelves are still a mess. It is a long job bringing them up to date despite the fact I have never owned great numbers; it is the decants and carded samples that will take the greater chunk of time.

Weekly Scent Discussion #18: Many or just a Few?
by DorothyGrace | Perfumes & Brands
Hobby
...I enjoy testing perfumes more than I like to own full bottles. There are not all that many I would re-purchase and of those that I would many have gone through one re-formulation too many.I love Aromatics Elixir but the new version brings me up in a sore rash (still ok with my half bottle from the 1990s). Asking someone why they need so many perfumes is like asking why someone needs a new book to read or why someone needs to have so many different cheeses in the fridge. There we are, something about me; books, perfume, and cheese.

Weekly Scent Discussion #17: You Tube Reviewers
by DorothyGrace | Perfumes & Brands
...I very much like Lanier Smith; a gentleman with a quiet soothing voice that reviews a wide range of perfumes from cheap and cheerful to niche.I also like Katie Puckrik Smells but she hasn't been posting much of late (nothing for nearly a year).A third one I like is Moody Boo Reviews. She posts regularly, she is amusing, and her love of perfumes really translates well to video.
