What perfume have you bought recently?

...Sweetgrass, "Knowing" is so very beautiful. I hope you enjoy it. I'll be curious to know how you like it. I used to wear "Caleche" years back, too. Nice choices...

What perfume have you bought recently?

...DarkMatter:Congratulations! I've been smoke free for four years and know how hard it is. You deserve those treats! :DThank you, and Greysolon too! :)I decided to resist and forego Jasminora, and instead scored a mini of vintage "Calèche" and a mini "Knowing", and sold some bottles I wasn't really reaching for. So far so good, I think perfume is keeping me on the straight & narrow and off cigarettes tbh :D

Are there perfumes not suitable for you?

...experience the same as Sweetgrass with musk. I buy lots of scents without testing - but I always check the notes first and if musk is among them I test it before buying. One that does...

What perfume have you bought recently?

...Sweetgrass: I just put in an order for "Lisette", debating whether to fork out money for "Aqua Allegoria Jasminora" as well as a gift to myself -- 5 weeks smoke... debating whether to fork out money for "Aqua Allegoria Jasminora" as well as a gift to myself -- 5 weeks smoke-free this Sunday! The Guerlain Aqua Allegoria line: Your favourites?

...Omni:I ordered a bottle of Flora Nymphaea due to an online daily special. I am weak. It hasn't come yet but I will report on it. Katie Puckrik's review is flattering. As for Apres L'Ondee, it is proving very difficult to get and the price is skyrocketing.Wow, I do hope it isn't discontinued! eBay seems to have the edt, hopefully also where you live...I should don Flora Nymphea today, it's so sunny! I am not such a fan of honey per se though, I might swap/sell my bottle because life is too short for just nice perfumes.

...Lol DarkMatter, no reason to feel ashamed! That looks like a nice wardrobe base for all sorts of moods and situations so you should be well set up providing you like at least most of what you got :)I just put in an order for "Lisette", debating whether to fork out money for "Aqua Allegoria Jasminora" as well as a gift to myself -- 5 weeks smoke-free this Sunday! The Guerlain Aqua Allegoria line: Your favourites?

...Scarletting:A friend gave me two miniatures from this range but the labels had come off the pretty bottles and so I've had to guess to identify them. I'm pretty sure one is Lys Soleia and the other is Pivoine Magnifica. Trying to find some way of positive ID besides going by detectable notes... might have to bring them to a counter to be 100% sure. The minis should have stickers in the bottom with batch numbers and fragrance names, have they come off too? Daamn...

The Guerlain Aqua Allegoria line: Your favourites?

...Omni:I have toyed with buying one of these but with Apres L'Ondee likely to be discontinued I bought it instead at a very good price on Fragrancenet. I read somewhere that Guerlain was trying to recapture something of Apres L'Ondee's ethereal appeal with the AA series.Huh, I hope they won't discontinue Après l'Ondée. I certainly haven't smelled any Aqua Allegoria that could live up to its ethereal appeal, as you put it (even though Al'O is not my favourite perfume, not by a long shot), although some of them are nice and well-done light edts on their own.ETA: Sleuth, Bois de Jasmin has done a review, other than that nobody seems to be talking about it.

Comments on perfumes: compliments and insults

...My perfume rarely draws comment (nobody's ever remarked on Alien, even...!), but a few days ago I was trying out "Moschino" and went to help a friend clean up after moving, and she said it reminded her of her grandmother and brought back some unpleasant memories  Won't be wearing that one around her any more, not sure if I'm going to keep the bottle even because it's just not my style.

Your favourite lavender fragrance

...Another vote for Serge's "Gris clair..." is an exceptional lavender perfume although it is feminine-leaning more than unisex imho. There's nothing fresh or spring-like that I can think of though :D

Looking for modern chypres!

...Sleuth:- Relatively new release: "Soir de Lune"- Old and worth checking: "Knowing" and "Miss Dior Original"- Chypre structure without moss: "Le Parfum de Therese", "Colonia Assoluta" (a mature and not-so-light cologne)I'm sure there's 21st century avant garde chypre stuff, but don't ask me!Thanks - I've been looking at "Knowing" as it's relatively easily available across the board. :) The closest thing to 21st century avant garde chypre I can think of is "31 Rue Cambon", the chypre that isn't really a chypre. "Disco Diva" is a nice fruity chypre, and I love those both as well as contemporary (!) "Mitsouko".

Looking for modern chypres!

...Cryptic:If you're looking for something recent out of the mainstream houses, good luck! Seriously, the only thing that comes to mind is "Miss Dior Original," which is essentially a diluted version of a 1947 release. "Chypre" in the current mainstream parlance usually translates to a patchouli perfume containing no oakmoss whatsoever. On the other hand, the niche houses have many lovely offerings. "Chypre Palatin" by Duchaufour, Andy Tauer's "Une Rose Chyprée" is excellent and Serge Lutens has a few good ones ("Rose de Nuit," "Chypre Rouge," etc.) "Noir Epices" is beautiful, and so is "Hermessence Poivre Samarcande." The problem is, oakmoss is de rigueur for a good chypre and an attempt to ban it outright is currently afoot in Europe. If that succeeds, chypre lovers will probably be forced to turn to the natural perfumers for their chypre needs. I'm still in the process of testing a slew of naturals, but hopefully will have a few to recommend down the line.I really should have gotten some of the old Miss Diors that were being cleared out of the way of the renamed stock a while ago in a cosmetics shop I visited. It is still a good scent, and I didn't rly mind it being diluted... Thank you so much for the niche recommendations! I have been meaning to try some more Tauers but the rose in the name has kept me from checking out Une Rose Chyprée -- I'll just have to get over that :D

Looking for modern chypres!

...Sleuth:Are you looking for contemporary chypres or are you looking for fragrances that have survived the regulations in a good way? Both! Thanks to those who have already given their suggestions :)

Looking for modern chypres!

...Are any worthwhile? Much has been said about the IFRA regulations butchering basically all the classics in this genre. What I want to know is are there any fragrances out there that could fill in the gaps and take the genre to the 21st Century?

Cultural influence on perfume taste

...Rebella:Oh, in that case swedish (and scandinavians in general I guess) are more like americans, then south europeans. Everything marketed as clean and fresh is on the perfume toplist here. And not to mention all the different celebrity scents. So, fresh, clean, fruityfloral and with some celebrity name on it, it´s a total success here. :? In Sweden we don´t have much of a perfume tradition as in countries in southern europe, and middle east, india and so on. But, on the other hand swedes are very trendy and I think brands like swedish Byredo is popular among people without an actual perfume interest, but that wants to feel more unique then wearing the average drugstore brand. Comme des Garcons is also a little more known in sweden. I can´t say my american perfumista friends differs so much in taste from my european one´s or south american and so on.I dug up this thread from the archives while looking for something else but I definitely spy these cultural differences -- I can't say anything abt American tastes but I can definitely confirm that the Nordic countries tend to favour the fresh, clean, barely-there sort of perfumes with the exception of some global megahits like Poison and stuff. The difference between Nordic countries and Southern Europe is PALPABLE and used to give me headaches ;)Of course this is just my observation but I agree with Rebella, perfumistas' tastes don't seem that affected by local conventions. And to finish this off with a personal anecdote: I used to think "Shalimar Parfum Initial" was a real stinkbomb when I first tried it in the beginning of my perfumed journey, now I think it's a lovely tame comfort scent to wear at home :)

Is it time to stock up?

...This is a timely reminder that I should probably stock up on some favourites, seeing as they were limited editions to begin with and regulations aren't going to help with availability.
