What perfume would suit these guys?
by Cryptic | Parfumo Community
...Fun question. For Heine, the quintessential German poet, I'd pick the iconic Echt Kölnisch Wasser. A Midsummer Night's Dream is the first thing that comes to mind for Mendelssohn, so something romantic but not too serious. One of the Lolita Lempickas might fit. Maybe Au Masculin.I'd give Bach Jubilation XXV because the overall fragrance is complex enough to qualify as baroque and Amouage's trademark frankincense suits his sacred music. Plus, he must have had close to XXV children  and he was happy and well-adjusted compared to most of the other great ones.

...I feel for you, PBullFriend. Political differences shouldn't be an excuse to throw civility out the window.Dulce, I'm hoping for a brokered GOP convention. I think Mr. Romney may have plans to ride down the aisle on a white horse, and if he does, the Trump tantrum should be something to behold.

...Glad you had such a positive experience, Dulce. I'm all in favor of sensible eating and a healthy lifestyle, but I sort of hate the use of the word "clean" in connection with food. It seems like some judgy person came up with that term in order to appeal to puritans or something. In my world of filth, food isn't "dirty" unless it fell on the floor and stayed there for over five seconds. ...ScentFan:Yes, that goes without saying, Cryptic. Luckyscent is probably my prime supplier and the people there are wonderful. I often order decants based on their suggestions. Volutes does remind me of a few by Serge Lutens I recently tested, though, and since Dulcemio asked for suggestions . . .Good grief. My response was addressed to a friend of mine who perhaps hasn't visited Scent Bar before and may not be familiar with the information I shared. No implicit criticism of your post was intended and I'm sorry that you appear to have taken it that way.

...The Scent Bar is a palace of delight, Dulce. If you haven't been there, you have a real treat in store. The selection is beautifully edited and curated by people who know and love perfume. Unless they've changed things around, the perfumes aren't grouped according to house at all. They're in categories such as Incense, Gourmand, etc. I wouldn't worry about what to test if I were you. If you give them an idea of your preferences they'll pull out something completely splendiferous for you to try. Have a ball, and be sure to tell us what you scored.

pay to get review published?
by Cryptic | Parfumo Community
...Perfume and death? Interesting topic. I hope the hereafter has a fragrant equivalent of the Rainbow Bridge where we can be reunited with long-lost discontinued and pre-reformulation perfumes. ;) Sounds like a perfectly acceptable topic of discussion to me, but someone no doubt found it ghoulish or irreverent or something and complained. The good news is that you won't see that happening here. They delete spam and duplicate threads, but that's it.

...ScentFan, I deplore most censorship, but I can't speak to what goes on at Basenotes because I've never had the patience to cope with the technical problems that used to crop up there on a regular basis. Hopefully they've solved them.I'm not exactly sure what you mean by rowdy, but I think we can agree that disputes can be positive in that they show engagement and interest. I'm all in favor of a good argument as long as the participants differ over ideas and don't get personal and nasty. And I think it takes a kind of integrity to publicly air a grievance in the hope of resolving it as opposed to simply bad-mouthing in private. Sad to say I've seen a lot of that.

...My limited experience with Basenotes has been positive. At the same time, I see no problem in debating their administrative policies. If discussion and criticism are silenced, improvement seldom occurs. Regardless of how you feel about the requirement to upgrade for instant review publication, I think it's reasonable to say that non-upgraded reviews shouldn't languish for months in the queue. If I were in charge over there I would certainly want to know if that was happening on my watch. It goes without saying that they have the right to handle matters in any way they deem fit. It should also be a given that their decisions can be questioned in a constructive manner, which was exactly the point of this thread, if I'm not mistaken.

What is the "Aventus" of female fragrances?

...Hi, Keppy. My vote would be for Coromandel, but Parfumo has tons of data on this sort of thing. Under "Parfumo trends," check out "Often desired." "Popular decants" and "Often noted down" might also be a helpful source of info. http://www.parfumo.com/Discover/ParfumoTrends/Often_Desired

What makes a perfume more suitable for young people?
by Cryptic | Perfumes & Brands
...Interesting. It's certainly true that kids love sweets, but it appears that the preference begins to decline during adolescence, which is when many people develop an interest in perfume.Liking Sweets Makes Sense For Kids, ScienceDaily, 2009Although I haven't heard parents or teachers complaining about the perfumes you've listed, I am familiar with the "Wall of Axe" thanks to this hilarious article.

What makes a perfume more suitable for young people?
by Cryptic | Perfumes & Brands
...Lots of excellent points have been made, and I would only reiterate that the perception of a fragrance as being appropriate for a certain gender or age group often comes from the way it's marketed. We take our cues from the advertising (in the case of mainstream releases), as well as the way the fragrance is packaged. Some niche brands have eliminated the outward distinctions with a uniform look and unisex labeling, but you'll nonetheless see fragrances being rated as best suited for young/old, women/men based on the notes. As Dulcemio and Triffid have said, all of the above are subjective generalizations, to be taken with a grain of salt. :)
