...I can't stand clowns either. I also can't handle those costumed mascots with the big face-hiding masks on. Some person that I can't see or make eye contact with trying to touch me? Yeesh!

Marketing Mistakes - arbitrary target group?
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...If you can't see how those comments are offensive to an entire group of people it's no use discussing this further, but I'll make one last attempt:You keep putting forth the same idea that the gender binary is harmful to nobody and isn't worth bothering over, as if because you have no experience with it it's somehow invalid. Their 'dynamic' can't fit inside the binary because it has myriad legal and social entanglements. You're oversimplifying the issue, too, when you assume that everyone that doesn't fit into either 'male' or 'female' is somehow 'confused'. Please keep in mind that gender and sex are two very different concepts. The natural world may not be gender neutral, but it also isn't just a binary like our society has traditionally understood it. Previously (and to this day) intersex children have been surgically altered to be made to fit into this construct, forced into the closest box... and that's just the purely physical angle. It's not really that hard to appreciate that a reality that deeply effects the lives of many (even if that many is, in comparison, a 'minority') should warrant some consideration, especially if that consideration does not impeach on the majority. What does it even matter to you if these people are given equal recognition? Why is it such an uncomfortable idea? What do you lose from it?

Marketing Mistakes - arbitrary target group?
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...Do you really need me to point out what about your earlier post was offensive? Surely you know.Is it the part that anyone not cisgendered is "confused"?Or the "woe is the world, the transgenders won't breed" argument, which is plainly ridiculous in an overpopulated world?Or, what I believe is the main issue here, that you seem to think that granting equality to some somehow infringes upon your own freedoms? You seem to believe that since your own experience is A-ok, everyone else's is, and thus there's no need to progress. But not everyone is in an A-ok place like you are, and those people and allies of them feel a need to progress. A little bit of empathy goes a long way.As for me starting the discussion, it was relevant for me regarding "marketing mistakes" and the marketing towards genders. The conversation from there was not just me. I don't just post to hear myself talk. I'm not being PC to be PC, this is an issue dear to me and others. If you no longer want to discuss it, that's fine, but again, asking for an end and then fanning the fire is not constructive.

Marketing Mistakes - arbitrary target group?

...Dulcemio:Me finding something feminine because it's sweet isn't stepping on anyone's personal or civil rights. Let's move on, please.By the way, the perpetuation of the human race depends on the heterosexual, non-gender confused majority finding the opposite sex fascinating enough to want to bang and make more human beings. So, pardon me if I don't subscribe to the "gender-neutral is best" philosophy.Once again, people enjoying 'masculine'/'feminine' is not an issue, but you seem intent on tilting at that windmill.Asking people to move on while simultaneously posting something incendiary is not helpful.

Books: what are you reading right now?
by MRoth | Off Topic
...Re-reading the Acorna series by Anne McCaffrey. The title character is a real Mary-sue, sure, but I've been on a bit of a nostalgia trip. While some of the books I once loved proved to be rather dour and disappointing upon return (Redemption of Athalus, I'm looking at you!) I find Anne's classic sci-fi novels as simple and sweet as when I first delved into them. The Brainships series will be next.

Reusing empty sample vials?
by MRoth | Perfume Discussions
...I've tried but unless it's a very soft scent that's been in them I can never get the smell of the original juice out of the sprayer. Since they're a reasonable price via Proudstyle I've resigned myself to putting them in the recycling and buying some more... I don't like waste, but I dislike the idea of having/giving a wrong impression of a perfume more.

Marketing Mistakes - arbitrary target group?
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...They're not being asked to. I made a point that people should be free to identify as they feel fit and of course that includes, say, a cisgendered female enjoying feminine things. Extending equality and understanding towards a minority doesn't remove anything from the privileged majority. And at no point did I suggest we do away with 'masculine' and 'feminine'. It's the hypermarketing towards either sex, the reps that refuse to let opposite genders sample perfumes etc that I have issue with and I see as a symbolic binding and that's what branched into this secondary discussion.

Do you keep your samples?
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...I keep all of my samples unless I go on to own it as a full bottle. And if I trade away a used FB I generally take a 1ml sample from it to keep and remember it by. That way I have a nice catalogue.

Marketing Mistakes - arbitrary target group?
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...I don't mind that either, people should be free to identify with whatever they feel. It's those that proselytize the boundaries as finite rather than fluid that bother me. And it's very difficult to study how much of gender identity is innate and how much is instilled, even learned passively via a very gender-focused culture. As for who gets harmed by going along with the gender binary? Well, anyone that doesn't fit within it, to be honest. Intersex, transgender and third gender individuals, and to a lesser extent those that are cisgender but don't fit the prescribed cultural mould. So, to these people, breaking from a binary into a spectrum would mean a world of difference.

Marketing Mistakes - arbitrary target group?
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...No no, it's not your terminology that bothers me, it's more the hypermarketing, the shop assistants that wrinkle their nose at women trying men's perfumes and vice versa. It's this whole cultural gender binary that I find incredibly tiresome... all that way down to parents that don't let their son play with barbies while girls aisles are filled with pink cleaning/motherhood toys. You know that pink used to be the 'masculine' shade? Anyway, I ramble.

Samples from Houses - best experience
by MRoth | Perfumes & Brands
...+1 for Tauer. After reading positive comments here I finally bought some samples. The little tin they come in is great, it lends a feeling of quality and permanence you don't normally get when buying samples. The package arrived in an amazingly short time considering the distance!
