EU Allergen Legislation: Please Read!
by Greysolon | Parfumo Community
...Cryptic:Meanwhile, other avenues are being explored, so keep the faith. :)Listen, you and Mia and your crew have made a lot of headway getting the word out and enlisting/educating thousands. Now if we could convince the houses and designers to either work with each other or engage their customer base that would be awesome!

Cocoa-centric perfumes?
by Greysolon | Perfume Recommendations
..."Santal majuscule" by Serge Lutens is an interesting take on cocoa.Just three notes: rose, cocoa and sandalwood. The cocoa blends with the rose and sandalwood in a way that enhances their natural qualities and vice versa. One caveat: this dries down to a sandalwood centric fragrance -though you can still smell rose and cocoa- so if you have any hang ups about sandalwood this may not be for you.

Anyone know the Décant Shop?
by Greysolon | Perfumes & Brands
...ScentFan:As it happens I ordered a Chypre Palatin sample and two others from them back in November. Placed the order close to midnight and it shipped the next day. I placed another order in November and it shipped the same day. Didn't notice the lack of a phone number.Given it's a web based business I don't think the lack of an address or phone number is really a big deal. I just took a quick look over at Surrender To Chance and I couldn't find an address or phone number on their site. With this sort of service the experience of others is often the best indicator of whether or not it's safe to take the plunge and order. What I have to say next is not meant to call into question the honesty or integrity of any decanter. When it comes to decanters you're trusting them to put the real product into your order. I believe Surrender To Chance and Perfumed Court have some sort of notice that says, in effect, they're filling your decant with the manufacturers product. I've always assumed that means from a bottle they've purchased new unless it is one of their vintage products which are always clearly listed on the websites.ScentFan maybe you can answer this question since you've ordered from the DecantShop. When Sweetgrass first posted their link I thought I saw mention of some sort of trade in policy for customer's unwanted perfumes. This morning I don't see that trade notice at all. Did anyone else see something similar or was I hallucinating? If they do take in 'trades' what do they do with those items? I didn't notice anything on the website about decanting 'vintage' perfumes. I'm not saying they're decanting from trades because I honestly don't know. Just wondering...

...Cryptic:Grey, as someone who worked very hard on this issue before it was even cool, you get a gold star. :) http://www.ispreview.co.uk/articles/10_Best_UK_Broadband_ISPs/gold_star_small.jpgYeah, but it was y'all who did the heavy lifting required to create a platform with the potential of putting the brakes on further regulation. Dare we hope for a rollback of previous restrictions? I'm glad everyone pooled their creative and intellectual resources to see this through. You get a bling star 8)

by Greysolon | Off Topic
...Cincy:I have been waiting to see a hummmer at my feeder, yep saw one this morning. :)I guess they're headed this way, Cincy. I'd better start cooking nectar. I have been chasing the phoebes off our outdoor lighting fixtures where they keep trying to build their beautiful, mossy nests. The poor little guys are very determined... sigh... :(

The Significant Other - Perfumes?
by Greysolon | Perfumes & Brands
...Silverfire:If anything, there's some mutual enabling going on. LOL!Hayven:Correct me if I'm wrong. Sometimes I feel like Ulta has a better selection of men's colognes than women's perfume. One of the ways I spiraled into the addiction was buying perfume for my wife as gifts which then led to buying fragrances for myself. Like Silverfire, there's no covering up the dysfunctional level of mutual enabling that goes on between us. I know things are bad when my wife -usually the careful money manager- is tries to goad me into buying a high end perfume for myself and I have to say no!Hayven, maybe your Ulta has a better men's selection than our local outlet. But then I always think the women's selection is better no matter what the store! Last year Ulta remodeled our local store but they hung onto the same old, shop worn men's display. They simply moved it to a different location. To see fragrances on the bottom-most shelves you practically have to crawl around on the floor. The women's display is now set on nice circular and curved, serpentine shelves set no lower than waist height. Although I will say, those refill CANISTERS of Alien look hideously industrial, don't they?

So many great vetivers... Vétiver de Frédéric - Frédéric Haldimann
Re: Guerlain vintage
...Apicius:I could not resist! I spent 260 € on a 200 ml splash bottle of Guerlain's vintage Vetiver EdT on ebay.As I could have forseen, it is quite rotten. I get a slight whiff of the old Vetiver during the first seconds after application, then some spice and leather take over with vetiver notes stepping aside. After an hour or so, some Vetiver comes back, but something else is missing, maybe the mossy side it once had? The vibe of the vintage does not fully break through, and longevity is reduced to about 3 hours,A nice bottle for the shelf, though.Apicius, I like your, "Oh well..." attitude about your purchase :D That's one big bottle, isn't it!

rose orientals, please!
by Greysolon | Perfume Recommendations
Re: rose orientals, please!
...Dulcemio:I am on the hunt for my perfect rose oriental and would love some suggestions. Here are some I already know:"Noir de Noir" (like) +1 for Noir de Noir, Dulce. What else do you need, right? One of my favorite rose fragrances. Although I consider it more of a night out sort of scent. I don't think I could get away with wearing it to the grocery store or work. It's kicking'!

New study of sense of smell: 1 triilion?!

...Triffid:There's a perfume idea here for sure!Triffid, I was trying to think of a clever perfume name based on this article when I realized there was at least one "carbon based" fragrance. However, I didn't notice notes like burned tires, barbecued meat or gunpowder..."6C Carbon" by nu_be"Sweet & Sour Carbon" by Linn Young

Guerlain Coriolan: aged to perfection or vinegar?
by Greysolon | Perfume Recommendations
...Epimedes:My bottle of Coriolan dates back to 1999, according to batch code. I don't detect any obvious off notes, even though I am generally very picky when it comes to old fragrances. To me, Coriolan projects modestly, not a sillage monster at all, and longevity has always been only average. I haven't tried L'Âme d'un Héros, so unfortunately can't say how the reissue would compare to the original, maybe they improved it using new technology. One reason I think 'old' Coriolan may be worth having is its unique flacon. Brass-plated strips holding the curvy bottle and the cap that you flick to open with your thumb, a very pleasing and beautiful design for a masculine perfume.I went ahead and ordered Coriolan and I'm wearing it for the first time today. It's really very nice and I'm looking forward to doing a side by side wearing with L'Âme d'un Héros. I checked the batch code and my bottle is also from 1999. Everything seems just fine with mine, as well, and your other observations seem consistent with my experience so far. Dries down to a nice leather which I find reminiscent of "Derby".Yeah, and the bottle is cool. And speaking of Guerlain bottles, I wonder why they decided switch from the bee hive bottles to the ugly wood frame bottles for the men's Les Parisiens (L'Âme d'un Héros, Chamade) collection?

New study of sense of smell: 1 triilion?!
by Greysolon | Perfumes & Brands
...Thanks for posting the info from Science, Epimedes. It seems much more complete than the NPR article. Honestly, I'm surprised that subjects were able to detect differences between such complex blends. Did the Science article mention if subjects could identify the specific odors that made the test fragrances different or was it that they could simply tell there was a difference?

New study of sense of smell: 1 triilion?!
by Greysolon | Perfumes & Brands
...There is an oft quoted study that found humans can distinguish 10,000 scents. This article is about a new study that claims the number is actually one trillion! It appeared on National Public Radio's medical page. Now, the researchers are not saying we can distinguish one trillion individually named odors. Rather, that we can detect small differences in perfume-like concoctions (my term). The researchers then extrapolated that information mathematically and reached the figure of one trillion. What's interesting is that the results led the researchers to a separate conclusion and it's something perfumers/noses have known all along: that it's possible to create a particular scent from an accord of notes which are seemingly unrelated to that scent.

Mechanical perfume bottles
by Greysolon | Perfumes & Brands
...Scarletting:Edit: Hmm, it's showing the wrong bottle. Does anyone know how to specify the right perfume when there are multiple name matches?Sometimes the Parfumo system is very precise about the name. In this case I think it wants "Kenzo Power". Occasionally I have to go to the page of a specific fragrance and then copy/paste the name into the text window because there's a slight discrepancy between what I've written and what's actually on the page.I've never seen the bottle in person but Power's stainless steel sake bottle is sleek.Hayden, the on/off knob on top of the Addict bottle is one of those touches that adds to the experience of using a product. I assume it also functions as the spray button?Sleuth, the Deisel bottle is interesting because it utilizes packaging that appears to be so contrary to the idea perfume. Kind of edgy, toxic looking...

Mechanical perfume bottles
by Greysolon | Perfumes & Brands
...WolfM:The first ones which I can think - "X-Centric" , "Desire for a Man" , "Desire Blue" , "Desire for a Woman" - by DunhillI like the Dunhill bottles with the liquor flask design.Even though though they are not particularly mechanical, both Chanel and Diptyque use magnetic caps for some perfumes. Those caps go back on the bottle with a gratifying snap.
